The Basic Parts of an Automatic Transmission (Part 1)

28:14
Visit me at: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ This is part one of my front wheel drive (FWD) automatic transmission dissection video. In this video I cover the operation of clutches, bands, accumulators, clutch drums, the oil pump, the valve body, valves, check balls, seals and 'o' rings, as well as the construction and function of many of the internal hard parts of an automatic transmission. To be honest a rear wheel drive transmission isn't much different as many of the basic components are the same. I guess what I'm saying is that you could use the information in this video to have a basic understanding of a rear wheel drive automatic transmission also. It is just a basic overview of the main components. I don't get into theory and operation so much. Just the general operation and identification of the parts. I may make more videos on this topic based on the comments I get so feel free to ask questions and perhaps I'll answer them in a future video on this topic. There will also be a separate video on the parts and operation of the torque converter as well. When that is posted I'll post links below to that video. Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Qf6O0oAs7U Torque converter dissection: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U_d_tBn-HQ Discussion about this video: https://www.ericthecarguy.com/kunena/18-The-EricTheCarGuy-Video-Forum/43585-the-basic-parts-of-an-automatic-transmission#50371 Stay dirty ETCG Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, it cannot guarantee against unauthorized modifications of this information, or improper use of this information.  EricTheCarGuy assumes no liability for property damage or injury incurred as a result of any of the information contained in this video. EricTheCarGuy recommends safe practices when working with power tools, automotive lifts, lifting tools, jack stands, electrical equipment, blunt instruments, chemicals, lubricants, or any other tools or equipment seen or implied in this video.  Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, no information contained in this video shall create any express or implied warranty or guarantee of any particular result.  Any injury, damage or loss that may result from improper use of these tools, equipment, or the information contained in this video is the sole responsibility of the user and not EricTheCarGuy.

How To Change Gearbox Oil - Daihatsu Cuore & Mira L512S - Avanzato TR-XX R4 Project Episode 6

06:19
Changing the gearbox, transfer case, and rear axle oils on my Daihatsu Cuore Avanzato TR-XX R4 project car. Not a bad job to do once you know where the drain and fill plugs are! Reference for servicing specs (Japanese): http://www.geocities.jp/club_30th/l500_sdata.htm The FAQs: "So this is a Mira, right?" - Yes, sort of. It is basically identical to the L500 (specifically, the L512S) Daihatsu Mira TR-XX Avanzato R4. "Don't Mighty Car Mods have one of these?" - Again, sort of. They're a very close relative of the Daihatsu MCM's Marty is a big fan of. The car in their Kei To The City film (and Marty's later conversion project) share much of this car's DNA. "Didn't Regular Car Reviews drive one of these?" - Yes! On the RCR UK trip, they drove an almost identical UK-spec Cuore Avanzato. I actually met the owner at the RCR UK meetup. It's actually my Suzuki Cappuccino that they mention in the video about the meet. "What does Cuore Avanzato even mean, anyway?" - It's Italian, actually. "Cuore" means "Heart", and "Avanzato" means "Advanced". "I drove one of these in Gran Turismo, and it said it was front wheel drive, not all wheel drive?" - They did 2WD/FWD versions of the turbo Miras in Japan, too, the "4" in the name is what denotes the AWD/4WD/4x4 version. "Is it a kei car?" - Yes, it meets the kei car regulations, though whether it "counts", being a UK car, is an interesting question. "Is it JDM?" - No, it's a UK model, there are some subtle differences/modifications for the UK market, though nothing earth shattering. "Did they really only make 80 of them?" - Of the UK road car version, yes, give or take a couple, plus there were about 20 rally-prepared ones. The Japanese equivalent is far more common. "Is it a 3 cylinder engine?" - No, it's a 4 cylinder, the Daihatsu JB-JL 16v engine, though it meets the same 660cc capacity limit for kei cars that the three cylinders used elsewhere do. "Is it turbocharged?" - Yes, with a small top-mount intercooler. "How does the AWD work?" - There is a selectable drive to the rear coming off the gearbox, with a viscous coupling between the rear differential and the propshaft to allow for the difference in wheel speeds when cornering. "How much does it weigh?" - 768kg, per the UK original specification sheet. "Where can I get one?" - To be perfectly honest, it's a lot easier to find a JDM one as an import than a UK car, but if you keep an eye on Ebay and forums, one might come up. "Is it for sale?" - I'm afraid not, no. Daihatsu Hijet Mini Truck Project and DIY Auto Body And Paint Q&A!

Get complete auto body and paint DOMINATION and training here: https://www.learnautobodyandpaint.com/vip-offer/ Read the Blog: Daihatsu Hijet Mini Truck Project and DIY Auto Body And Paint Q&A!: https://www.learnautobodyandpaint.com/daihatsu-hijet-mini-truck-project-diy-auto-body-paint-qa/ Mayah’s going to show you how the bed of the Daihatsu Hijet works. Even an 8-year old can do this! Pretty cool, huh? It’s a basic pick-up and can be turned into a flat bed. It holds up to 1500 pounds! It’s awesome. I paid $2500 for the truck, $1500 for shipping to Galveston, TX and $200 for customs clearance. I had to hire a customs agent, then another $200 for storage fees because I couldn’t get it right away. I’m in it about $4600. These trucks are sold locally at around $8000 to $10,000 at a higher mileage of 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers. My truck has a low mileage of 9500 kilometers which is 6000 miles. For the amount I paid for, I get a nice little classic truck. It’s something different and I’m sure that I can get it registered on the road. Since it’s 25 years old, it doesn’t have to DOT approved. I need to get it insured and registered. It’s not meant for the highways. You can’t go 80 miles on a highway with it. If you do and crash, you’ll be dead! But, it’s good for “around the corner” use. We’ll do a build on it and make it look awesome. We’ll probably get some bigger tires on it. We’ll put a cool custom paint on it, with probably a two-tone or three-tone color scheme graphic. The bed is 6 ½ feet by 4 ½ feet wide while the entire length of the vehicle is about 10 feet and 4 inches. It’s a short truck. Question: If I buy a car with no paint chipping on it, will it be easy to sand it all down and prep it for professional DIY paint job? [4:35] Absolutely! Hit it with 400-grit, mask it up then paint it. Question: What advise can you give when painting with single stage? [4:47] You can paint right over single stage with base coat clear coat or with another single stage paint. You’re not going to get any reactions. Question: Should a Seams sealer be done before all of you do your doing body work? [4:57] If you’re talking about bonding seams together on body panels, yes. Then, you get an epoxy primer over that. The first thing you want to do is pull the dents out and get it as even and pulled out as much as possible. Cut where its clean and not damaged too much. Then go from there and do your bondo. If you’re using a good primer filler, that is a good enough foundation base to put your base coat clear coat on. You can also use a primer sealer as a base as well. Any sort of 25K or thick primer is a good base coat to put brand new base coat clear coat on top of, or single-stage paint. Question: What can you do about peeling clear coat? [6:47] You can sand it out with a 280-grit to 360-grit, depending on how bad it is. Then, prime it and get everything flat before you hit it with 400-grit. You can water sand or dry sand. But, I like to finish off with watersanding because I feel like I get a nicer, cleaner cut. But, that’s my preference on how I end my prep. I might do a 400-grit dry sand with a machine to cut it quickly, but I’ll wash it with 400-grit using my hand. Then, paint your base coat clear coat right on top of that. Question: Painting with black always makes me get runs. How can I stop that even if I use a low amount of paint? [9:19] You get runs because you don’t have your flow correct. When you’re painting a car, you need to make sure that you’re away from the car, at a certain distance, and moving at the same speed all the time. Otherwise, if you slowed down in one area, that’s where you’ll get a run. If you’re a newbie, I’d recommend taking off parts instead of taping them up when painting because you’re not capable of going around those parts yet. You’ll most likely get runs in those areas. That’s common for newbies. Take off your parts so you can just paint across the panel. You have to be 4-6 inches away from your panel and keep a smooth constant spray across your panels, especially when doing your clear coat. Also make sure to watch the light and that it’s laying on glossy. AISIN 4x4 Locking Hub Dial - Clutch to Pawl Assembly - FIX IT DIY! Toyota Suzuki Mitsubishi Isuzu

07:48
This video is specifically covering the assembly of the AISIN Sekei 4x4 manual locking hub clutch assembly. Often times people take the hub apart to clean it, but then find when they put it back together it locks the first time they turn the dial to the "Lock" position, but then, when they turn it to the "Free" position, it stays locked. This is caused by an improper assembly of the Clutch, Spring, and Follower Pawl. It's an easy fix, but it's not intuitive. You don't have to remove the hub body, just the dial cover. All you'll need is a ratchet, a 10mm socket, and a small screwdriver.

How convert from automatic to manual locking 4x4 hubs. I replaced the original auto locking 4x4 hubs on the F150 flareside with new manual locking hubs. The left front was making a ratcheting sound the other morning and I knew it was time to get rid of those junk automatic hubs and replace with a good ol set of manual lockers! No guessing or worries anymore, you know 100% for sure that they are locked or unlocked. Highly recommend this upgrade to anyone with automatic locking hubs!!!

I just wanted to say Happy Valentine’s Day My Auto Nation!! I hope you got your significant other some flowers or a gift. A quick update for the VIPs. I started uploading videos of the Daihatsu Hi-Jet Project in the member’s area, so please go check it out. It will be a 15-20 video series, which will show the step-by-step process of the work that I will do to this Mini Truck. There will be buffing videos. How we remove runs and buff it to a nice gloss. As for this Mazda Miata, I will be washing it off, taking off the top and preparing it for black paint soon. I’ve been looking at Super Chargers for this thing. That would be cool. Also, I got an after-market steering wheel that I may be putting on the Miata to replace the old one. It’s a little smaller than what I want so I’m not that crazy about it. But, I just want to replace the original because I think it’s ugly and bulky looking. I ordered a second gen steering wheel on eBay, which will be arriving soon. They usually sell around $200 with the airbag. It’s a Nardi steering wheel. I hope the nut is the same size. I took a chance and bought it since I got it at just $50. If it doesn’t fit, I can resell it at around $200. These airbags are money, especially if you have the BMW and Mercedes Airbags. For the Miata, these airbags are around $50-$80. Also, we are revamping the DVD kit version, updating and adding new content which is so cool. It’s pretty busy, but things are going great. For the non-VIPs who are interested in getting access to the complete series, head on over to the website and learn more about the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP Course. Don’t forget to grab your FREE 85-Page Auto Body And Paint Manual and get cranking on your own car projects. Hit the Like button before you leave. How to perform a Steering Box Adjustment

02:42
HI Everyone: Received a request on how to adjust a steering box. This video shows how to properly adjust your steering box. You turn the adjusting screw clockwise to tighten the box. Always check for notes or procedure on all vehicles, on Mercedes you loosen the locknut and turn the adjusting screw counter clockwise to tighten the steering. On Domestic and Asain vehicles you turn clockwise. On vehicles that don't have power steering there will usually be a fill or vent plug you remove to make sure the box has the correct amount of fluid in it before making any other adjustments. On most vehicles you should not tighten the adjustment more than one and a half turns. For more information be sure to visist: http://www.johnsadlersautorepair.com

Car Engine Overheating - Causes and Symptoms of Over Heating Car Engine

12:29
http://www.TrustMyMechanic.com "Why is my car engine over heating? What causes an engine to overheat" I hear this question all the time on my websites and especially during the hotter summer months. I made this short video to help you determine what might be the cause of your overheating problem and what you can rule out as not causing the issue before you go to your mechanic. This can save you some time, frustration and money by doing so. "My engine overheats at freeway speeds" When you are on the freeway you have lots of airflow across the radiator which helps remove the heat that the engine antifreeze/coolant has accumulated from the cooling system. Since the engine is running at a much higher RPM than that at idle, the water pump is spinning around and pumping coolant at a much higher rate as well. If there is a restriction in the radiator, the coolant will not be allowed to circulate fast enough inside the engine. The coolant will basically be roadblocked inside the radiator due to the restriction. A radiator usually gets build up of rust, minerals and calcium type deposits at the BOTTOM of the radiator. This restriction really can not be removed by "flushing" with a garden hose. In most cases this restriction will require a new radiator. Think of this type of engine overheating problem like this. You are trying to run a 10 mile marathon, but you have to do it with your mouth taped shut. You can walk with your mouth shut but running at full steam for a long distance requires more air than your nose can provide. A restricted radiator is the biggest culprit in an engine overheating complaint on the freeway or at higher speeds. Although, if the radiator is low on coolant....that can also be the problem, so check coolant level first. "I am constantly having to add coolant to my radiator, do I have a leak?" Anytime I hear of a coolant leak or engine overheating complaint I ALWAYS start my diagnosis with a cooling system pressure test. "My auto mechanic said I have a head gasket leak in my car" I get tons, literally tons of emails each week with this question. I would say that most of them are NOT having a headgasket problem but rather a lazy auto mechanic problem who failed to do a proper cooling system pressure test. Here are a few common symptoms I would expect to see if you had a blown headgasket or any other internal coolant leak. 1. Constantly having to add coolant to the radiator, with no visible external leaks found 2. White steam/smoke coming out the tailpipe, and worse or more smoke at freeway speed 3. Failing a cooling system pressure test, meaning the air pressure gauge drops but there are no external leaks to be seen. 4. An engine miss fire, due to coolant leaking inside the cylinders and fouling out the spark plugs. Lack of overall engine power and performance. 5. Usually a yellow check engine light will be on the dash, since the computer sees the engine miss fire and stores that code inside the computer memory. 6. Lack of engine compression. A manual compression test should be done on each cylinder to prove that there is a compression problem with 1 or more cylinder. This is different from the PRESSURE test which I mentioned above. 7. White powdery residue on the inside tip of the spark plug. When coolant enters the cylinder on the inside of the engine (which It should not be doing) the engine is going to try and burn that coolant, which it will have a very hard time doing. This coolant is what causes the engine to miss fire and produce the steam white smoke out the tailpipe. A white powdery residue will some times form on the internal engine tip of the spark plug. If you have any of those symptoms AND you have rule out all other possible issues then you might want to consider trying this very simple and effective head gasket sealer you can do yourself. I have had great success with it over the years. It's a sealer additive made by K&W, called Engine Block Sealer, but don't use it as the can direction say. I think my way of using it works much better and its much easier. http://www.myhonestmechanic.com/articles/engine-block-sealer-additive.shtml Do NOT use a radiator stop leak additive! check out my sites for more free information http://www.myhonestmechanic.com http://www.trustmymechanic.com/forum (ask your questions for free on my forum board)
