Peter Criss Of KISS On Surviving Breast Cancer

08:34
After decades rocking out as the drummer and founding member of Kiss, Peter Criss had thought he'd seen and done it all. But one day eight years ago, something so unusual truly rocked his world. "I was very ignorant. I was clueless. I thought it was a weight-lifting injury," said Criss about the breast cancer he discovered. At the time, Criss' wife was in the throws of her own cancer battle. She suggested her physician check him out. The doctor recommended Criss visit Dr. Alexander Swistel. Criss then had a biopsy done in New Jersey that came back negative, but the pain in his nipple area continued. "I was misdiagnosed. If not for his (Dr. Swistel) going further and going further, through the hands of God, through him I am alive," said Criss. Dr. Swistel was insistent Criss have more tests. It turned out he did have male breast cancer, which is about one percent of all cancers. "I knew my body well. I worse Spandex for 50 years," joked Criss. "It's such a low number that most people are not following it and men are not catching it," said Dr. Swistel. "By the time it gets diagnosed, it's at a later stage." Fortunately for Criss, the cancer was caught early enough that he did not require chemotherapy. Dr. Swistel performed surgery to remove the cancer. "I feel terrific," said Criss. He suggests men do self-exams like women are encouraged to do and ask for help from their partners. "You check her, she checks you. It could get interesting," said Criss. Criss will be honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Cancer Research and Treatment Fund Tuesday, Nov. 18 at The Essex House. The hall of fame dinner begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are still available. Visit CRT.ORG

13 Facts about Breast Cancer

01:57
http://www.factslides.com/s-Breast-Cancer Breast cancer is cancer that develops from breast tissue.[1] Signs of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling of the skin, fluid coming from the nipple, or a red scaly patch of skin.[2] In those with distant spread of the disease, there may be bone pain, swollen lymph nodes, shortness of breath, or yellow skin.[3] Risk factors for developing breast cancer include being female, obesity, lack of physical exercise, drinking alcohol, hormone replacement therapy during menopause, ionizing radiation, early age at first menstruation, having children late or not at all, older age, and family history.[2][4] About 5–10% of cases are due to genes inherited from a person's parents, including BRCA1 and BRCA2 among others. Breast cancer most commonly develops in cells from the lining of milk ducts and the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. Cancers developing from the ducts are known as ductal carcinomas, while those developing from lobules are known as lobular carcinomas.[2] In addition, there are more than 18 other sub-types of breast cancer. Some cancers, such as ductal carcinoma in situ, develop from pre-invasive lesions.[4] The diagnosis of breast cancer is confirmed by taking a biopsy of the concerning lump. Once the diagnosis is made, further tests are done to determine if the cancer has spread beyond the breast and which treatments it may respond to.[2] The balance of benefits versus harms of breast cancer screening is controversial. A 2013 Cochrane review stated that it is unclear if mammographic screening does more good or harm.[5] A 2009 review for the US Preventive Services Task Force found evidence of benefit in those 40 to 70 years of age,[6] and the organization recommends screening every two years in women 50 to 74 years old.[7] The medications tamoxifen or raloxifene may be used in an effort to prevent breast cancer in those who are at high risk of developing it.[4] Surgical removal of both breasts is another preventative measure in some high risk women.[4] In those who have been diagnosed with cancer, a number of treatments may be used, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted therapy.[2] Types of surgery vary from breast-conserving surgery to mastectomy.[8][9] Breast reconstruction may take place at the time of surgery or at a later date. In those in whom the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, treatments are mostly aimed at improving quality of life and comfort.[9] Outcomes for breast cancer vary depending on the cancer type, extent of disease, and person's age.[9] Survival rates in the developed world are high,[10] with between 80% and 90% of those in England and the United States alive for at least 5 years.[11][12] In developing countries survival rates are poorer.[4] Worldwide, breast cancer is the leading type of cancer in women, accounting for 25% of all cases.[13] In 2012 it resulted in 1.68 million cases and 522,000 deaths.[13] It is more common in developed countries[4] and is more than 100 times more common in women than in men

Jean Criss Survivor Interview, CRISSCROSS Intimates (1080p Mar 2017)

08:28
Jean Criss, Founder, Designer & Breast Cancer Survivor shares her creative story about a new luxury intimate apparel collection designed for women and men breast cancer survivors in need of post-surgical undergarments. Feel Confident, Look Beautiful or Handsome! "After I wrote about my breast cancer survivor story in 'My Pain Woke Me Up: BLISS!' and then wrote about how to put ideas into play in 'LIVE Your Dreams' I knew there could be better ways for survivors to have an intimate and colorful experience post-surgically. I recall the first thing waking up from the OR room, looking down at myself and saw this ugly, white, utilitarian zipper garment, my chest stuffed with gauze and tape -- so uncomfortable. If it wasn't bad enough losing your breasts, I was humiliated wearing this garment. I just knew the survivor experience could be improved. After being hospitalized over a dozen times for various complications and multiple surgeries, I wore too many of these "ugly bras". So I decided to use my media and tech experience to design the first bra, The Nina Bra, named after my dear aunt who died of Stage IV malignant BC and then designed an entire colorful collection (all USPTO utility and design patent approved). Here's my innovative story. CRISSCROSS is being introduced on the anniversary of Nina's birthday (4/19/17). My motto's: "Don't let cancer get the BREAST of you, BLISS! and LIVE Your Dreams." All the breast, Jean

Her inspiration to create this new product line came from the difficult time she had in finding suitable and comfortable undergarments to get her through recovery and back to work. Meet Isabel, Spinning® Master Instructor and Breast Cancer Survivor

02:08
One of our beloved Spinning® Master Instructors, Isabel Shephard-Schaefer, shares her personal story about her fight with breast cancer. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to share this inspiring Spinning story with you. Throughout her battle with breast cancer, Isabel showed grace, courage, gratitude and love. Her attitude was that this was a momentary glitch in her life. She would say, "This will be all over with in a year." Her smile glowed. She embraced losing her hair and feeling sick after her treatments. For Isabel, it was just another day. As awful and as tired she felt, she remained positive. Maryjo Ruckel, close friend and fellow Spinning Master Instructor, would say to her, "Girl, you make cancer look easy," even though she knew that this was the most horrific battle of Isabel's life. The good news is that it was just a glitch in her life. She is healthier and stronger than ever before. Bravo! In her usual positive outlook and spirit, Isabel shares with us that throughout her battle with Breast Cancer that she just kept on pedaling. About 1 in 8 (12.3%) women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Spinning is joining the fight against breast cancer and bringing awareness to our community especially for the month of October. Breast cancer touches our staff, Master Instructors, Spinning Instructors, fellow riders and global community, we all want to ride for the cause. At Spinning headquarters, we are hosting “PINK RIDES” in our studio to raise awareness to all those who have been affected by breast cancer. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Spinning is also inspiring women to think pink by riding with pink Giro® cycling shoes in our special “Gear for a Cure” package–20% of the proceeds will go toward Breast Cancer Research. http://www.spinning.com/en/webshop/product/4462/gear_for_a_cure_package We are with you every pedal stroke of the way! Special thanks to PLZ Company Productions who donated post production services in memory of Barbara Ann Zook.

It's a Hollywood moment, thanks to my musician cousin. Also in this episode: a Providence dance party, a crazy burger sandwich, a Tamoxifen update, my former hairdresser/chemo nurse Bonnie, a message to those of you fighting cancer, and Millie the Poodle as cute as ever.
