How To Compensate & Scale Your Startup Sales Team | Dan Martell

05:28
Maybe you’re worried you’re not building your sales team the right way? In this video, I share the 5 steps to hiring efficiently and building a fair compensation structure while scaling your sales team. Essentially, a quick fix “easy button” for business owners who can’t be bothered to take full control of the lifeblood of their business. Smart right? ;) His big promise was that he could get me scheduled meetings with qualified buyers for our services... ... so I gave him a try. The cost was about $5K/month + a $5K setup, so I gave it a try to see if it would move the needle. My average deal size was $60K, so I figured just one new customer every month would be a huge win. No brainer, right? But it all fell apart. Fast. The meetings were horrible. The prospects unqualified. And the whole thing turned out to be a huge waste of time, energy, and money. That’s when I decided to smarten up, take full control of the selling process, and build my own sales team in house. I went “all in” and immersed myself in everything I could about building and scaling a sales team. That’s what I want to share with you in this week’s video. If you want the bulleted list of activities that’s required for scaling a software sales team, here’s my prescription... 1. Pay a base salary 2. Set a quota 3. Provide a commission 4. Use accelerators 5. Hire a sales manager Now, the truth is, in the early days you’ll likely be doing all the selling, but the best way to backfill this work is to document everything you do to achieve results. This includes creating a demo script using my Rocket Demo Builder framework, your system for qualifying, and the follow up process. It’s how my coaching clients and the founders I advise have scaled their sales teams to over 150+ sales people. If you have any questions about scaling your sales team, leave a comment below and I’ll be sure to reply. Dan “backfill to scale” Martell Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/jaLt-HyELTs ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force. An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. Because Dan gives freely of all that he knows. After all, you can only keep what you give away. There are many salary negotiation strategies, but it takes the right salary negotiation skills to get that bump in pay that matches what the market offers and what you’re worth. The 6 Major Tips on How to Negotiate a Higher Salary include: Tip # 1: Talk about your value - bring up evidence that prove why you’re worth what you’re worth. Tip #2: Do market research - know what the market is paying for someone with your credentials and level of experience. Tip #3. Give a number, not a range - many people are afraid to offend the employers and give a range for what salary they’d be open to. This is not the way to go. Tip #4. Go in with leverage - you want to leverage everything you can to enhance your chances of getting that bump in pay. Tip #5. Time it appropriately - if you’re in a job offer situation vs. asking for a raise, you need to know the right timing on when to bring up your salary expectations Tip #6. Mental addition of two-digit numbers

08:00
I explain various basic principles we can use to mentally add two 2-digit numbers. One of the main principles is that we can add in parts. For example, to add 60 + 23, we add 60 and 20 to get 80, and then add the 3 to get 83. Then I compare single-digit additions to two-digit additions, and that gives us another strategy. For example, just like 8 + 6 goes over ten by four (14), even so, 28 + 6 goes over the next ten by four (and is 34). The basic idea for adding two 2-digit numbers is to add them part-by-part. For example, to add 15 and 18, we add 10 + 10 = 20, then 5 + 8 = 13, and lastly add those two sums: 20 + 13 = 33. But sometimes other "tricks" work. For example, to add 44 + 19, think of 19 as being 20. Then, 44 + 20 = 64, but that is one too much, so the real answer to our original problem is 63. We also fill in a skip-counting pattern and solve some missing-number puzzles (which Mathy of course loves!) This lesson is meant for 2nd or 3rd grade, or for anyone who hasn't learned these principles! Check out my other videos at http://www.mathmammoth.com/videos/

Reordering in Basic Addition For Kids - Mental Math

07:10
There are different mental math strategies for kids that help them in making the mathematical operations much easier. One of these strategies is reordering the numbers when it comes to basic addition for kids; choose the bigger number and keep it in mind then count the smaller one on fingers or on the number line. Do you know what is reordering or what is its importance? When it comes to addition, counting on fingers or number lines is the two ways that kids usually depend on and that is exactly why they are supposed to choose and reorder the equation in order to keep the big number in their heads and count the smaller number on fingers or jump on the number line. Reordering in addition is the process of choosing the bigger number in the equation, teaching the child to keep that number in mind, and then choose the smaller number and count in mind and on fingers or else jumping on the number line. Sometimes choosing the mind alone tends to be a little bit harder for the child and that's why they will need something written or seen in front of their eyes such as the number line (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn2YBpCIzis). The whole idea behind number line is drawing a line on the whiteboard, starting with the big number that is already in the equation and then jumping the other smaller number on the number line. Always make sure that you are teaching your child to depend on the number line with the small numbers, from 1 to 6 only, in order not to make lots of jumps and get lost in the middle of the way. The strategy of using the number line is one of the most effective when it comes to children, but it is only used with small number additions and not with the big ones, that's why it might turn out to be not much useful with specific addition equations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtwNvOdwiqA). In addition, reordering won't affect the final answer that the child should bring at the end because both numbers will eventually be combined together, unlike subtraction in which the smaller number should be always removed from the bigger one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsQHpE6D6PQ). On the other hand, subtraction could also be performed on the number line but instead of jumping forward, the child will then jump backwards. Reordering is one of the mental math strategies in addition and this is one important thing the kids should know about when they are learning it. Reordering for basic addition is taught to kids at 4 or 5 years old and upwards. The main purpose behind using the blank number lines in combination with the physical process of putting the number in your head is to show the child what they should be thinking about, what they should be visualizing in their heads. The more the kids use these blank number lines and put the number in their heads, the more they will be able to visualize it and the more they will be able to move on with that strategy and think more about those numbers as supposed to actually work with the written form. When it comes to education, there is one important thing that parents should keep in mind all the time, which is practicing. Kids are supposed to practice whatever they learn in order to finally keep it in their heads and memory all the time, and when it comes to addition then reordering and number line are great opportunities to make the operation much easier for them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNZ0xWMb54M). To make it simpler for your child, you could start with counting small numbers on the number line, start with one, two, three and then keep going up when the kids get more used to it all. There is just one important thing to always keep in mind which is the fact that this is a mental strategy and that's why kids should always depend a little bit more on their minds and think about what they are supposed to do next. There are lots of different mental strategies for addition and math in general that parents could use while homeschooling their kids and which we have brought lots of them on our channel which you could check (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWE2AzEsgU4). The mental math strategy we are going to work on in this educational video is called "near doubles" which is used with addition of very close numbers as a gesture of making it easier for the child to do it all in mind. The whole idea behind the strategy of "near doubles" is to double the bigger number in the addition equation and then remove the difference between the two numbers from the answer. To make it clearer, if the equation is 7+8 then the steps will be doubling the bigger number which will be 8+8=16 then we know that the difference between 7 and 8 is 1 so we will remove 16-1=15 and this will bring us to the final answer which is 7+8=15. There are different mental math strategies used with addition but every single one of them depends on the numbers used in the equation. In the case of the "near doubles" equation, the numbers should be very close to one another because kids might get lost in the middle if the numbers are not near and the difference between them is huge. Since this is a mental math strategy, it means that kids should give their minds the chance to think and consider the answers before giving them. Kids should first think about which is the bigger number, they should consider its doubling answer, they should count the difference between the two different numbers, and then eventually come to the point of removing it from the doubled number. These are different things which the mind will need to think about and consider before coming to the part of answering the equation. One of the other famous strategies related to mental math and addition is reordering. In addition, kids should learn to keep the bigger number in their heads and count the smaller one on their fingers or through using any other favorite technique like the number lines (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn2YBpCIzis). So reordering is all about placing the bigger number first and then moving forward to counting the smaller one in mind, on fingers, etc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdux-Xn35qE). Addition and subtraction could be both solved in lots of different ways and by using different mental math strategies that will always depend on the equation itself; big or small numbers, big or small difference between the numbers, etc. Also the strategies that are used with addition might not work with subtraction and vice versa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAlpqGKQOG0). One of the good strategies that make subtraction much easier for kids is the partitioning one where they choose the smaller number in the subtraction equation, partition it into tens and units, remove the tens from the bigger number and then remove the units from the answer, and this eventually bring them to the final answer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhWalcCRLX0). Practicing is very important and parents should always know that when they help the kids to practice more, they will learn faster and easier because practicing is the main rule in learning. Another important thing parents should keep in mind is that kids are different and some might take more time in learning things than others, so parents should never worry and should know that kids will eventually learn everything when they keep learning and practicing on these things they learn. While teaching your kids subtraction or addition, it is important to educate them about the different vocabulary related to them to give the kids the chance to know what they are supposed to do. For example, addition is the same as combining, putting together, plus, etc. while on the other side, subtraction is the same as taking away, removing, minus and so on. These words are sometimes more understandable by the child and thus give him/her the chance to know what they are supposed to do in order to solve the equation. Playing games, using mental strategies, depending on the regular old methods and techniques are all different things parents could follow and depend on when it comes to educating their kids and teaching them the different mathematical operations that are found out there, such as addition and subtraction which always come at the beginning after learning to count.
