Cancer Statistics and Outcomes Differ by Zip Code

01:03
Gary A. Puckrein, Ph.D., president and CEO of the National Minority Quality Forum, says that cancer statistics are not the same across the nation. Puckrein and his team collect data by zip code to see where cancer presents itself. Interestingly, it is not the same across the nation. Certain areas may have a higher prevalence of one type of cancer. This data allows researchers to start asking questions about why this might be. Not only is cancer prevalence varied by geographical location, but outcomes change by region, too. Puckrein also goes zip code to zip code to find out the type of care people in different areas are getting, including their screening and clinical trial habits.

Could your zip code be contributing to your cancer risk?

02:58
A new study reveals that your risk of certain cancers may have a correlation with where you live. The research indicated that people in poorer areas were more likely to have certain kinds of cancers as compared to residents in wealthier neighborhoods, and vice versa. CBS News medical contributor Dr. David Agus explains to the "CBS This Morning" co-hosts.

Your Neighborhood, Your Life Expectancy

03:37
In which John discusses the astonishing degree to which an American's zip code affects their life expectancy, and why life expectancy varies so much within the United States. Also discussed: Regional variation in life expectancy in Canada and other rich nations, how much smoking reduces your life expectancy, the relationship between exercise and longevity, and more. SOURCES/INFO: Inequalities in Life Expectancy among U.S. Counties, the study that was just published showing that life expectancy varies by 20 years within the U.S. depending on your location. (It's fascinating! Really!) http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2626194 An NPR summary: https://www.mprnews.org/story/2017/05/08/npr-life-expectancy-can-vary-by-20-years-depending-on-where-you-live Life expectancy in my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana varies by more than 14 years depending on your ZIP code: http://www.savi.org/savi/documents/Worlds_Apart_Gaps_in_Life_Expectancy.pdf The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's cool app that tells you, based on your ZIP code, your life expectancy: http://www.rwjf.org/en/library/interactives/whereyouliveaffectshowlongyoulive.html Life expectancy for smokers is 10 years shorter than for nonsmokers: https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/tobacco_related_mortality/ Physical activity can expand average U.S. lifespans by 4.5 years: https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/press-releases/2012/PhysicalActivityLifeExpectancy Life expectancy in Canada varies by income quintile, but by less than it does in the U.S. http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/publications/department-ministere/state-public-health-status-2016-etat-sante-publique-statut/page-4-eng.php This study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK62591/ explores life expectancy variation within countries over time, finding that in most rich nations (Canada, Germany, Australia, etc.) life expectancy variation has declined since 1980, while it has steadily increased in the U.S. This is also where you can see that life expectancy among people with the highest incomes in the U.S. is (very slightly) higher than life expectancy among high income Canadians. Lastly, LET'S TALK ABOUT LIFE EXPECTANCY. Dr. Aaron Carroll of Healthcare Triage explains it here better than I can: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/how-flawed-is-life-expectancy/ But basically, there are a number of factors that go into life expectancy that can cause variations--especially when it comes to miscarriages/newborn deaths--but most of those variations are between countries, not within them. (i.e., it is not the reason for the huge geographic discrepancy in the U.S.) In the field of healthcare outcome analysis, there are other complains about life expectancy--it can be affected by things that have little to do with healthcare (like violence and accident rates)--but that's not of concern here. In summary, the longevity disparity between rich and poor in the U.S. is real, and it is very high by international standards. ---- Subscribe to our newsletter! http://nerdfighteria.com/newsletter/ And join the community at http://nerdfighteria.com http://effyeahnerdfighters.com Help transcribe videos - http://nerdfighteria.info John's twitter - http://twitter.com/johngreen John's tumblr - http://fishingboatproceeds.tumblr.com Hank's twitter - http://twitter.com/hankgreen Hank's tumblr - http://edwardspoonhands.tumblr.com

Study: Counties had higher death rates than others

00:30
Your zip code may determine whether you'll survive cancer. A new study from the University of Washington finds that overall cancer deaths have declined about 20-percent since 1980. But the researchers also found some counties experienced much high cancer mortality rates than others. Clusters of breast cancer were found in the south and along the Mississippi River, while dangerous kidney cancers were more likely in the Dakotas and parts of the midwest.

Drivers Are Overpaying By Not Following One Simple Rule

00:27
This is the one simple truth your car insurance company doesn’t want you to know. If you are currently insured, drive less than 40 miles per day and live in a qualified zip code you can get an extremely high discount. Additionally, if you have no DUI’s, you can get even more discounts. But do you think your auto insurance company will tell you that? When drivers enter their zip code and vehicle information at Provide-Savings.com, many are shocked at the results they find. We weren’t surprised when we got questions from drivers if these rates are real. The truth is people say it‘s possible to save up to 50% on their car insurance costs and some say they were eligible for rates as low as $13/week due to recent insurance policy changes. When we heard about these claims, we decided to investigate it for ourselves.

Health related quality of life as a potential predictor for mortality

04:46
Dr DuMontier talks to ecancer at SIOG 2017 in Warsaw. He discusses health related quality of life and how it is becoming more important as survival rates increase. Furthermore, health related quality of life improvements are shown to in turn also improve survival rates. In fact, he describes how understanding their quality of life goes a long way to predict mortality in those patients - reducing risk up to 50% in breast cancer. As more patients survive, improving their quality of life during and after treatment becomes more widespread.

Location may predict obesity - IN60

01:27
From Seattle - As they say: location, location, location. It turns out that location may also predict obesity. Research looking at obesity rates and ZIP codes shows that for every $100,000 increase in mean home price, prevalence of obesity increased by 2%. In fact, ZIP code was a better predictor of obesity than education or income. From Atlanta - Unfortunately, the obesity epidemic has another casualty. This time it is high blood pressure in children. For the first time in decades, the rates of high blood pressure and pre-hypertension are rising. This is believed to be related to the fact that nearly one in 7 children is overweight. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke. From New York - While early detection is the mantra for cancer, ordering imaging tests en masse is not the answer. Citing no clear benefit and potentially an increased risk, the American College of Chest Physicians have indicated that screening for lung cancer with tests like a CT scan is generally not necessary, even in smokers. And finally from the Congo - The WHO is confirming an outbreak of the lethal Ebola virus in the Congo. Over 160 are dead and another 370 are infected. The virus, which causes hemorrhagic fever and internal bleeding, is almost universally fatal. The last outbreak of the viral infection was over a decade ago. Vascular Zip Codes in Targeted Delivery of Multifunctional Nanodevices

01:01:41
Air date: Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 3:00:00 PM Time displayed is Eastern Time, Washington DC Local Category: Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Description: This laboratory screens phage libraries in live mice to identify peptides that direct phage homing to a specific target in the body. When the libraries are injected into the circulation, tissue-specific or tumor-specific differences in endothelial cells are primarily targeted. We have identified tumor-homing peptides that recognize angiogenesis-associated or tumor-type specific markers in tumor blood vessels, or distinguish the vessels of pre-malignant lesions from those of the corresponding normal tissues and of fully malignant tumors. Homing peptides have also revealed a zip code system of molecular changes in tumor lymphatics. We have used synthetic homing peptides identified by phage display to target nanoparticles to tumors. The vasculature is an excellent target because blood supply is important for tumor growth and because tumor vessels are readily available for circulating particles. The homing peptides deliver nanoparticles into tumors in a highly selective manner, and we have developed a nanoparticle that amplifies its own homing to tumors. Quite recently, we have discovered peptides that specifically home to tumor vessels, extravasate, enter into cells, and spread within tumor tissue. These tumor-penetrating peptides are capable of taking a payload, such as nanoparticles, deep into tumor tissue. We have elucidated the molecular pathway for the cell and tissue penetration by these peptides. We are using these peptides to construct multifunctional, targeted nanoparticles that also serve as tumor imaging probes and drug carriers. The NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series includes weekly scientific talks by some of the top researchers in the biomedical sciences worldwide. Runtime: 01:01:41 Author: Ruoslahti, Erkki. Breast Density Classification System Matlab code

05:05
Breast Density Classification System - Matlab source code http://www.advancedsourcecode.com/breastclassprot.zip Breast cancer produces a high rate of mortality worldwide. Early diagnosis is essential for treatment, however it is difficult to analyse high density breast tissues. Computer-aided diagnosis systems have been proposed to classify the density of mammograms, having as a major challenge to define the features that better represent the images to be classified. In this study, besides comparing them to other techniques, different texture descriptors for the representation of breast tissue density on mammograms are analyzed. We have developed an algorithm that is able to classify mammograms into three classes: Fatty, Fatty-Glandular and Dense-Glanduar. In the experiments, 322 mammograms from MIAS Database are used, and the highest accuracy obtained is 79.39% with Leave-One-Out cross-validation. Our approach is fully automated and it does not require any manual intervention from user. The proposed approach works in spatial and frequency-related domain and it results extremely robust to noise and background regions, with a high degree of accuracy. Index Terms: Matlab, source, code, mammography, breast cancer, breast density, texture features, classification, fatty, glandular, dense. Drone Over Vallejo - Save Sperry Mill - No! Orcem Cement

02:08
In 2008, City of Vallejo approved a plan for the Sperry Mill to be renovated for mixed use residential/retail. Looking at the view from this drone you see how perfect such a development would be on the waterfront of the Napa River. Sadly, the recession stalled the project and an industrial developer (VMT) moved in. They proposed to the City a private industrial port for bulk shipping with a cement plant (ORCEM). A report was circulated for public review and comment in September 2015. Hundreds of residents spoke out against the project. Agencies questioned the negative environment and health impacts. Organizations have written letters and made it public they oppose the project. The waterfront is too valuable to turn into a toxic mess. The San Pablo Bay / Napa River is already over burdened with industrial hazards from the refineries. People who live in zip code 94590 are already suffering higher rates of cancer, heart disease and asthma. Residents of Vallejo ask our Planning Commission, City Council and Mayor to reject the cement plant and go back to the original plan approved in 2008 to develop this area for housing, retail and public access recreation. Renovating the Sperry Mill will create a lot more construction and union trade jobs than a cement plant—and provide more long-term jobs for a wide range of skill levels with a lot less pollution. We wish to thank the following organizations which have taken a position against VMT/ ORCEM. If you would like to have your organization listed below, please email endorse@freshairvallejo.com. STS 2016 Press Conference: Race and Esophageal Cancer

12:55
This press conference took place on January 26, 2016, at the STS 52nd Annual Meeting in Phoenix. For more information, contact media@sts.org. Race, Lower Socioeconomic Status Linked With Worse Survival Following Esophageal Cancer Surgery Researchers call for changes to reduce health care disparities Phoenix (January 26, 2016) – Poor black patients undergoing surgery for esophageal cancer are at higher risk for death than white patients and patients with higher socioeconomic status, according to a scientific presentation at the 52nd Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. “Prior institutional experience suggested that outcomes of some cancers might be based on socioeconomic status as well as race, so we developed this study to determine if the relationship existed in patients with esophageal cancer on a national scale,” said Loretta Erhunmwunsee, MD who led the study while at Duke Health. Dr. Erhunmwunsee is now with City of Hope in Duarte, Calif. Dr. Erhunmwunsee and colleagues used the National Cancer Data Base to gather information on 16,807 patients, of whom 6,147 were treated with esophagectomy for esophageal cancer (stages I-III) between 2003 and 2011. Patients were grouped using median income by zip code. Black patients made up 5% (293) of those who underwent esophagectomy, and 40.3% (2,476) of patients were in the lowest two income quartiles. Before adjusting for outside factors (age, sex, other health factors, etc.), black patients had worse overall survival compared to white patients (median survival was 33 vs. 46 months, respectively), and each lower income grouping was associated with progressively worse survival. “These results show that poorer patients are at a higher risk of death following surgery,” said Dr. Erhunmwunsee. “This disparity likely is based on many factors—minority patients and patients with lower socioeconomic status often smoke more, have poor eating habits, exercise less, and are exposed to environmental hazards, all of which lead to worse health. And specifically, increased smoking and poorer eating habits can increase the risk of esophageal cancer.” After adjusting for outside factors, both black race and lower income group remained significantly associated with worse overall survival; however, there was no difference in survival rates among black and white patients in the highest two income groups. A significant difference still remained between black and white patients in the lowest income groups (median survival was 26 vs. 40 months, respectively), indicating a racial and economic disparity. “Prior studies have shown that ethnic minority and poor patients who have access to care may still get inappropriate treatment; however, even when they do receive adequate therapy (surgery), as in this study, disparities are prevalent,” said Dr. Erhunmwunsee. “These finding are important to patients because being aware of the factors that are linked to higher death rates can empower patients to be more active with their own health and medical care. We also hope that awareness of the problem among physicians and patients alike will lead to more public and professional focus on solving this disparity through strategies aimed at health policy, practices of health systems, and training of health care providers.”

COAL -- both a blessing and a curse

1/2/2011 - http://www.pressconnects.com/article/20110102/VIEWPOINTS02/101020320/Cancer-Cluster-Linked-to-Coal- (Excerpt) The coal-burning plant is NRG Energy Inc.'s Indian River complex and is located in Millsboro, Delaware. The study was conducted by examining the cancer cases in a six ZIP code area around the plant. The areas examined were Dagsboro, Frankford, Georgetown, Millsboro, Ocean View and Selbyville. The Division of Public Health study showed an incidence of 553.9 cancer cases per 100,000 residents of this area between 2000 and 2004 compared with the Delaware state rate of 501.3 and the U.S. rate of 473.6 cancer cases per 100,000 residents. Thus, this study confirmed that the rate of cancer cases in this area is 17 percent higher than the national average. -- This is excerpted from the 61-minute Coal Consciousnes, Chapter 6 in Recreating Conciousness -- http://vimeo.com/10422604 --- There have been economic studies for the states of Kentucky and West Virginia with controversial conclusions that coal mining is either benefical or costly. Obamacare Update – Right on the Money – Part 1 of 5

10:02
Sub Headline: A Refresher on the Affordable Care Act Synopsis: On March 23, 2010, a landmark healthcare law was passed which would fundamentally change the health insurance market as we knew it, and would have a direct effect on almost all Americans. With a seemingly endless stream of new regulations and requirements, coupled with the politically polarizing nature of the issue, it has proven quite easy to become confused with what is required of us. This illustrates the glaring lack of unbiased information, presented in easily understood terminology, and with no political slant. Content: It may be hard to believe, but this past March marked the six-year anniversary of the incredibly complex Affordable Care Act (ACA) being passed. Not surprisingly, many are still in a state of confusion regarding certain aspects of the law, and how they may or may not be affected by the law. The first and most important piece of the law that needs to be understood is the individual mandate. Simply put, the ACA requires most individuals to obtain acceptable health insurance coverage for themselves and their family members, or pay a financial penalty for not doing so. This rule became effective on January 1, 2014. In order to be able to implement this rule, some major changes had to be made in the health insurance industry as it stood, so everyone would be able to qualify for coverage without being discriminated against. This meant insurers would no longer be allowed to medically underwrite, and could not rider-out or exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions, nor would insurers be allowed to have two different sets of rates based on gender. This means, for example, a 40-year-old woman undergoing cancer treatment would not only be approved for a medical insurance plan with no medical questions asked, but her rate would be exactly the same as a perfectly healthy male of the same age, living in the same zip code, on the exact same plan. Furthermore, the law also features an employer mandate for businesses who meet a defined threshold in terms of number of full-time and “full-time-equivalent” employees. These employers are referred to under the ACA as “Applicable Large Employers” or ALE’s. If we simply leave it at that, then all of this seems very simple; however, it all gets much more complex from that point. Granted, the individual mandate is very simple – purchase compliant coverage for yourself and your family, and you will not be penalized. Fail to do so, and be penalized. For businesses, however, many are left feeling they are in an impossible labyrinth of determining size, market segment, measurement periods and a whole host of other requirements the law has imposed on businesses as a result of this law. And, this is all without mentioning all of the pitfalls and penalties that exist should a business fail to get all of this right! Watch the video interview with Kathy Garza, a group and individual health insurance expert and contributing author on all topics Obamacare and health insurance. Kathy uses easy-to-understand terminology to help individuals and business owners familiarize themselves with the requirements so they don’t face financial penalties due to non-compliance. The ACA is an incredibly complex law that started out with 2,700 pages and has since seen an additional 20,000 pages worth of amendments. This is enough to make anyone’s head spin, which reinforces the need for industry experts, such as Kathy Garza, to help navigate and provide strategies to manage the complexities related to the law. In this day and age, it’s all about minimizing the risk for financial penalties, which can, in some instances, be stiff enough to make a company close its doors for good. Nationally syndicated financial columnist Steve Savant interviews employee benefit specialist Kathy Garza on the Obamacare Update. Right on the Money is a weekly one-hour online broadcast for TV and radio distribution. The show contains five ten-minute segments that are redistributed online as individual video press releases. How to Buy Cheap Health Insurance (Information on Covered California aka Obamacare)

05:16
Pfeifer Insurance Brokers http://www.pfeiferinsurance.com 650-762-8087 533 Airport Blvd Ste 400 Burlingame, CA 94010. How to buy cheap health insurance in California using CoveredCA.com. Find out if you qualify for premium assistance and set yourself up with an affordable policy. https://youtu.be/Fe8VBMlRplw http://www.yelp.com/biz/pfeifer-insurance-brokers-burlingame http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ2JufO9yOg&feature=youtu.be My Name is Alex Pfeifer. I'm the owner of Pfeifer Insurance Brokers located in Burlingame California. Today I'm going to talk to you about Covered California, AKA ObamaCare, AKA the Affordable Care Act. By the end of this video you will know who this Act benefits, how to apply for a policy under the insurance exchange, and best of all I'm going to show you an example of a 30 year old who lives in San Francisco, earns $25,000 per year and qualifies for a health policy that is under $20 per month. The Affordable Care Act made three major changes to the Health Care Industry. One, Health policies have been standardized; making it much easier to make an apples to apples comparison across the different insurance companies. Two: Health is no longer a factor in determining your premium or eligibility. It no longer makes a difference if you have cancer, a tumor, are obese or you smoke. It looks like you caught a break. The only factors for determining your premium are your age and your zip code. Three: There is premium assistance for individuals making less than $48,000 per year. The premium assistance can really add up and drive down the premium you actually have to pay. This is covered.com the official homepage for Covered California. I want to show you a couple of helpful links. Let's go to the shop and compare tool and then click on Health Insurance Benefits. The Affordable Care Act set up four standard policies. The Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Plans. All of the companies that participate in the Exchange have to offer these four policies. The Bronze policy will have the lowest monthly premium, but it will also have the highest deductible and the highest copay. Now let's take a look at who's eligible for premium assistance. The income guidelines page shows that if you are an individual earning less than $48,960 per year you may be eligible for premium assistance. The less you earn the more premium assistance you may be eligible for. Now I would like to show you the fun part where we run a quote and I can show you how inexpensive a policy can be. Let's take a look at an individual who is 30 years old, lives in San Francisco and earns $25,000 per year. And that's enough to get us started with a quote. Click on See My Options. We get a pop up window that shows the metallic tiers. Here we can see the policies that are available to his person. And Wow! Look at that. CCHP is offering a policy for just $18 per month for the bronze policy. If you want a bronze policy but not the CCHP HMO policy you can see different options to the right. Scroll down and you can see the Silver plans. If you go to the next page you can see the Gold and Platinum plans. Click on a plan you are interested in. Note that there is $190 in premium assistance available to this person. You can see under the Platinum plan there is no deductible and the copays are very low. If you are interest in applying for a plan go back to the home page and click apply. If you need help, click of the request enrollment assistance button or contact a Covered California agent like myself. Covered California is good place to shop for your insurance needs. If you are eligible for premium assistance you will want to buy your policy through Covered California. If you are not eligible for Premium Assistance you can purchase your policy directly from the Insurance Company's website. I hope you enjoyed the video today. If you did give it a thumbs up. If you really liked it, share it with your friends and family. See you next time.

Health Equity Animated: Race

Minnesota consistently ranks as one of the healthiest states in the nation. Yet health outcomes, and opportunities to live a healthy lifestyle, vary greatly depending on who you are and where you live. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota believes that all people, regardless of race, income, zip code or other factors, should have opportunities to live the healthiest lives possible. Race impacts health outcomes. In Minnesota, only 22% of Somali immigrants have been screened for colorectal cancer, compared to 40% of those born in Laos and 70% of white patients. Only 25% of Native Americans are receiving optimal diabetes care, compared to 27% of African Americans and 41% of white patients. The mortality rate for African American infants born in Minnesota is double that of white infants. In “Barriers, Trauma, and Fear” we look at the experience of visiting the hospital through the lens of racism, bias, and fear. Neighborhood health survey: 4/10 in Tri-State think they live in a healthy place

02:23
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Your zip code may determine the health of your family. That's the latest from a new survey conducted in the Tri-State which looked at how people perceive where they live. The survey was just released by Interact for Health, who are a group of health care professionals dedicated to helping us improve the health of the local community. The survey is too new to see trends, but it's clear what you can and can't do where you live, could influence your health, and what you think of your neighborhood. When you look at the Tri-State from up above, you don't see a lot of differences, just the beauty, the bridges, the parks and the water. But Dr. O'dell Owens, the president and CEO of Interact for Health, says this survey, which asked people if they think we live in a healthy area, had some contradictions. “The survey found that people that the region may not be as healthy, but they all thought their neighborhood at a higher ranking was healthiest,” said Dr. Owens. Four out of ten people in all of the areas surveyed in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana said their own neighborhood is a healthy place to live, and that's down from a few years ago. Those in the city of Cincinnati were less likely to rate their neighborhood as excellent or very good. Those in Butler, Clinton and Warren Counties are the most likely to do so. What you may not realize is that when it comes to your health that more than your DNA code, it’s your zip code that makes the difference in life expectancy. In Cincinnati, the difference is 20 years between the poorest neighborhood, and the most wealthiest neighborhood. It's not about money, according to Owens, it's about the air you breath. “We know that in Cincinnati Public Schools, ten percent have asthma,” said Dr. Owens. The movement you get, the availability of healthy food and how easy it is for you to get to those things all matters. “Transportation plays a role, if you don't have transportation, can you get to a place where you can have fun, can you get to a place where you can get medical care?” said Dr. Owens. As for the one thing that may influence a child's health? There’s no question, according to Dr. Owens. “Play is healthy, you gotta play as a kid to be healthy,” said Dr. Owens.

When can I get a Medicare Supplement ?

05:31
http://www.LibertySeniorSavings.com (888) 506-7510. 88 Medicare Questions in 88 Days. Check out our Medicare Mini course http://www.GetMedicareSavings.com. Nicole Rada: Hi there, this is Nicole w/ Liberty Senior Savings. Thanks for watching this video. This is question 19 “Can I get a Medicare Supplement at any time?” Medicare Supplements are they pick up the difference that Medicare does not pick up and they go hand-in-hand with the original Medicare. As a standard, you can choose either zero deductible plan or $183 deductible for the annual those tend to be the most popular Plan F like Frank and Plan G like George. The 3rd popular one is Plan M. But the Plan F and Plan G tend to be the most popular, so the deductible choices are either zero deductible or $183 deductible. But the misconception is that you can only get a Medicare Supplement in the open enrollment period which is when you’re first turning 65 or the annual enrollment period which is the fall period between October 15 and December 7 and that’s not true. Medicare Supplements you can purchase those 365 days a year. Most people tend to get them when they are just turning 65 in that open enrollment period when they have their choice of anything with no health question but in our business, we help people save money all the time on Medicare Supplement. If you do not have an independent agent like our company checking on your rates every year, making sure that you have the lowest rate that you are eligible for based on your zip code, age, smoking or non-smoking and then your general health. There is a very high 90% likelihood that you could be over paying. 90% of seniors are over paying they just have not had someone to look at the rates and do an annual review. So that’s the misconception that you can only change your Medicare Supplement in that fall period. Now, keep in mind that we are not talking about Medicare Advantage. We are talking about Medicare Supplement, where you choose either zero deductible plan or $183 annual deductible plan. Goes tend to be the most popular plan because you know what they cover the most, so you can get those any time of the year 365 days of the year. Just keep in mind; you have to help qualify after that initial 6-month period when I first turning 65 need is absolutely answers and basic health questions. Nobody comes out to do any lab work. Just questions like if you have a stroke, cancer or diabetes complications. But don’t be overly concern about those either because I have clients and all the people I know have clients for example; I’m a very nice lady in Oklahoma, who had cancer 4 years ago. She fit right into standards with that company we put her who only has to be cancer-free for 2 years so don’t overly concerned it’s better to have a look at it and see if you can help qualify but yeah so that’s the answer to the question 19 “When can I get a Medicare Supplement?”. You can change them 365 days a year you are not limited to that fall period that fall period once you are limited to is Medicare Advantage or changing your drug plan. For the past 15 years, consumers have been hearing about this wonder material and all the ways it could change everything. Is it really almost here, or is it another promise that is perpetually just one more breakthrough away? Therapeutic ultrasound for acute ankle sprains in chiropractic | Carrollton, TX

http://www.dfwchiromassage.com/blog/about URL: http://dfwchiromassage.com/blog/5936/therapeutic-ultrasound-for-acute-ankle-sprains-in-chiropractic Carrollton Chiropractic and Massage 2810 E Trinity Mills Rd; Ste 203 Carrollton, Texas (TX) 75006-2369 Phone: 513-580-4930 Therapeutic ultrasound is a commonly used treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.  Ankle sprains are among the most commonly seen sport-related injuries and proper acute management can significantly improve the rate of healing and return to activity.  A major goal during the acute stage of healing is to control pain and inflammation.  The delivery of therapeutic ultrasound to an acutely sprained ankle can reduce pain and swelling while facilitating tissue healing. What is therapeutic ultrasound? Unlike diagnostic ultrasound that produces an image of something inside the body, therapeutic ultrasound consists of the application of high-frequency mechanical vibrations created by the conversion of electrical energy to sound waves.  Therapeutic ultrasound is typically applied at a frequency of either 1 or 3 MHz, depending on the depth of the target tissue.  Lower frequency, such as 1 MHz, targets deeper tissue, like a deep thigh muscle, while higher frequency, such as 3 MHz, is absorbed more superficially, like on the Achilles tendon. What are the effects of therapeutic ultrasound? Therapeutic effects of ultrasound are typically divided into thermal and nonthermal effects.  Nonthermal effects are those that are thought to be therapeutic in the acute stages of healing and include increased fluid movement in the area, increased protein synthesis, and improved blood flow.  These effects lead to reduced pain and swelling, and improved tissue healing.  The application is simple, consisting of placing a water-based gel on the skin, and then moving the sound head in small circles over the target area. Therapeutic ultrasound for acute ankle sprains A sprained ankle occurs when ligaments that stabilize the ankle are stretched or torn, resulting in acute pain, swelling, and loss of function.  Since the ligaments in the ankle are very superficial, your chiropractor may apply non-thermal, 3 MHz ultrasound over and around the damaged ligaments.  Treatment time varies but usually falls between five and 10 minutes per treatment, during which the patient feels nothing more than the movement of the applicator against the skin. Is therapeutic ultrasound the right treatment? While there is some controversy in the research regarding the benefits of therapeutic ultrasound for acute ankle sprains, the procedure is generally safe and effective on patients.  Make sure to tell your chiropractor of any conditions that may be contraindications for ultrasound, including metal implants, pregnancy, decreased sensory perception, cancer, or circulatory impairments.  In most cases, the application of nonthermal ultrasound to an acutely sprained ankle can reduce pain, shorten healing time, and get you back on track to normal activity. Metro police say the numbers are not accurate and the chance of becoming a victim was more like 1 in 44. Residents and council members were also surprised by the report.
