Cancer Statistics and Outcomes Differ by Zip Code

01:03
Gary A. Puckrein, Ph.D., president and CEO of the National Minority Quality Forum, says that cancer statistics are not the same across the nation. Puckrein and his team collect data by zip code to see where cancer presents itself. Interestingly, it is not the same across the nation. Certain areas may have a higher prevalence of one type of cancer. This data allows researchers to start asking questions about why this might be. Not only is cancer prevalence varied by geographical location, but outcomes change by region, too. Puckrein also goes zip code to zip code to find out the type of care people in different areas are getting, including their screening and clinical trial habits.

Could your zip code be contributing to your cancer risk?

02:58
A new study reveals that your risk of certain cancers may have a correlation with where you live. The research indicated that people in poorer areas were more likely to have certain kinds of cancers as compared to residents in wealthier neighborhoods, and vice versa. CBS News medical contributor Dr. David Agus explains to the "CBS This Morning" co-hosts.

Your Neighborhood, Your Life Expectancy

03:37
In which John discusses the astonishing degree to which an American's zip code affects their life expectancy, and why life expectancy varies so much within the United States. Also discussed: Regional variation in life expectancy in Canada and other rich nations, how much smoking reduces your life expectancy, the relationship between exercise and longevity, and more. SOURCES/INFO: Inequalities in Life Expectancy among U.S. Counties, the study that was just published showing that life expectancy varies by 20 years within the U.S. depending on your location. (It's fascinating! Really!) http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2626194 An NPR summary: https://www.mprnews.org/story/2017/05/08/npr-life-expectancy-can-vary-by-20-years-depending-on-where-you-live Life expectancy in my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana varies by more than 14 years depending on your ZIP code: http://www.savi.org/savi/documents/Worlds_Apart_Gaps_in_Life_Expectancy.pdf The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's cool app that tells you, based on your ZIP code, your life expectancy: http://www.rwjf.org/en/library/interactives/whereyouliveaffectshowlongyoulive.html Life expectancy for smokers is 10 years shorter than for nonsmokers: https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/tobacco_related_mortality/ Physical activity can expand average U.S. lifespans by 4.5 years: https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/press-releases/2012/PhysicalActivityLifeExpectancy Life expectancy in Canada varies by income quintile, but by less than it does in the U.S. http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/publications/department-ministere/state-public-health-status-2016-etat-sante-publique-statut/page-4-eng.php This study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK62591/ explores life expectancy variation within countries over time, finding that in most rich nations (Canada, Germany, Australia, etc.) life expectancy variation has declined since 1980, while it has steadily increased in the U.S. This is also where you can see that life expectancy among people with the highest incomes in the U.S. is (very slightly) higher than life expectancy among high income Canadians. Lastly, LET'S TALK ABOUT LIFE EXPECTANCY. Dr. Aaron Carroll of Healthcare Triage explains it here better than I can: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/how-flawed-is-life-expectancy/ But basically, there are a number of factors that go into life expectancy that can cause variations--especially when it comes to miscarriages/newborn deaths--but most of those variations are between countries, not within them. (i.e., it is not the reason for the huge geographic discrepancy in the U.S.) In the field of healthcare outcome analysis, there are other complains about life expectancy--it can be affected by things that have little to do with healthcare (like violence and accident rates)--but that's not of concern here. In summary, the longevity disparity between rich and poor in the U.S. is real, and it is very high by international standards. ---- Subscribe to our newsletter! http://nerdfighteria.com/newsletter/ And join the community at http://nerdfighteria.com http://effyeahnerdfighters.com Help transcribe videos - http://nerdfighteria.info John's twitter - http://twitter.com/johngreen John's tumblr - http://fishingboatproceeds.tumblr.com Hank's twitter - http://twitter.com/hankgreen Hank's tumblr - http://edwardspoonhands.tumblr.com

Study: Counties had higher death rates than others

00:30
Your zip code may determine whether you'll survive cancer. A new study from the University of Washington finds that overall cancer deaths have declined about 20-percent since 1980. But the researchers also found some counties experienced much high cancer mortality rates than others. Clusters of breast cancer were found in the south and along the Mississippi River, while dangerous kidney cancers were more likely in the Dakotas and parts of the midwest.

Go Ape zip-line death: Woman falls 40-feet from zipline and dies at Delaware park - TomoNews

01:13
BEAR, DELAWARE — Officials are investigating the death of a 59-year-old woman who died at a popular adventure park after falling from a zipline. The unidentified 59-year-old was reportedly visiting the Go Ape adventure course in Lum Ponds State Park on Wednesday afternoon. She was riding one of the park’s ziplines when she fell some 40-feet to her death, WPVI-TV ABC Action News reported, citing police. On its website, Go Ape says it gives patrons a 30-minute safety lesson before they venture into the park. During this time they teach visitors how to use equipment — including pulleys and harnesses — and other safety gear. After this visitors are left to enjoy the park by themselves, but instructors patrol the forest regularly. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the woman’s death. WPVI-TV ABC Action News reports that paramedics performed CPR while traveling to a local hospital following the accident where she was later pronounced dead. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Health related quality of life as a potential predictor for mortality

04:46
Dr DuMontier talks to ecancer at SIOG 2017 in Warsaw. He discusses health related quality of life and how it is becoming more important as survival rates increase. Furthermore, health related quality of life improvements are shown to in turn also improve survival rates. In fact, he describes how understanding their quality of life goes a long way to predict mortality in those patients - reducing risk up to 50% in breast cancer. As more patients survive, improving their quality of life during and after treatment becomes more widespread.

Location may predict obesity - IN60

01:27
From Seattle - As they say: location, location, location. It turns out that location may also predict obesity. Research looking at obesity rates and ZIP codes shows that for every $100,000 increase in mean home price, prevalence of obesity increased by 2%. In fact, ZIP code was a better predictor of obesity than education or income. From Atlanta - Unfortunately, the obesity epidemic has another casualty. This time it is high blood pressure in children. For the first time in decades, the rates of high blood pressure and pre-hypertension are rising. This is believed to be related to the fact that nearly one in 7 children is overweight. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke. From New York - While early detection is the mantra for cancer, ordering imaging tests en masse is not the answer. Citing no clear benefit and potentially an increased risk, the American College of Chest Physicians have indicated that screening for lung cancer with tests like a CT scan is generally not necessary, even in smokers. And finally from the Congo - The WHO is confirming an outbreak of the lethal Ebola virus in the Congo. Over 160 are dead and another 370 are infected. The virus, which causes hemorrhagic fever and internal bleeding, is almost universally fatal. The last outbreak of the viral infection was over a decade ago. Breast Density Classification System Matlab code

05:05
Breast Density Classification System - Matlab source code http://www.advancedsourcecode.com/breastclassprot.zip Breast cancer produces a high rate of mortality worldwide. Early diagnosis is essential for treatment, however it is difficult to analyse high density breast tissues. Computer-aided diagnosis systems have been proposed to classify the density of mammograms, having as a major challenge to define the features that better represent the images to be classified. In this study, besides comparing them to other techniques, different texture descriptors for the representation of breast tissue density on mammograms are analyzed. We have developed an algorithm that is able to classify mammograms into three classes: Fatty, Fatty-Glandular and Dense-Glanduar. In the experiments, 322 mammograms from MIAS Database are used, and the highest accuracy obtained is 79.39% with Leave-One-Out cross-validation. Our approach is fully automated and it does not require any manual intervention from user. The proposed approach works in spatial and frequency-related domain and it results extremely robust to noise and background regions, with a high degree of accuracy. Index Terms: Matlab, source, code, mammography, breast cancer, breast density, texture features, classification, fatty, glandular, dense. Transplant Center Liver Program

05:02
The Liver Transplant Program at the University of Michigan Transplant Center is part of the first and largest transplant programs in the state, and one of the original transplant centers in the country. Since our first liver transplant in 1985, we have completed more than 2,000 liver transplants, performing approximately 80-100 transplants a year. Our patient survival rate at one year is 88%, and our graft transplant survival rate is 86%, both on par with national survival statistics. The University of Michigan is one of only 20 programs in the country that offers liver transplant for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) approved by United National Organ Sharing, which involves complicated multi-modality therapy before the transplant. Our comprehensive multidisciplinary clinics and extensive clinical and basic science research programs assure our patients have access to the newest medications and technologies.

Drone Over Vallejo - Save Sperry Mill - No! Orcem Cement

02:08
In 2008, City of Vallejo approved a plan for the Sperry Mill to be renovated for mixed use residential/retail. Looking at the view from this drone you see how perfect such a development would be on the waterfront of the Napa River. Sadly, the recession stalled the project and an industrial developer (VMT) moved in. They proposed to the City a private industrial port for bulk shipping with a cement plant (ORCEM). A report was circulated for public review and comment in September 2015. Hundreds of residents spoke out against the project. Agencies questioned the negative environment and health impacts. Organizations have written letters and made it public they oppose the project. The waterfront is too valuable to turn into a toxic mess. The San Pablo Bay / Napa River is already over burdened with industrial hazards from the refineries. People who live in zip code 94590 are already suffering higher rates of cancer, heart disease and asthma. Residents of Vallejo ask our Planning Commission, City Council and Mayor to reject the cement plant and go back to the original plan approved in 2008 to develop this area for housing, retail and public access recreation. Renovating the Sperry Mill will create a lot more construction and union trade jobs than a cement plant—and provide more long-term jobs for a wide range of skill levels with a lot less pollution. STS 2016 Press Conference: Race and Esophageal Cancer

12:55
This press conference took place on January 26, 2016, at the STS 52nd Annual Meeting in Phoenix. For more information, contact media@sts.org. Race, Lower Socioeconomic Status Linked With Worse Survival Following Esophageal Cancer Surgery Researchers call for changes to reduce health care disparities Phoenix (January 26, 2016) – Poor black patients undergoing surgery for esophageal cancer are at higher risk for death than white patients and patients with higher socioeconomic status, according to a scientific presentation at the 52nd Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. “Prior institutional experience suggested that outcomes of some cancers might be based on socioeconomic status as well as race, so we developed this study to determine if the relationship existed in patients with esophageal cancer on a national scale,” said Loretta Erhunmwunsee, MD who led the study while at Duke Health. Dr. Erhunmwunsee is now with City of Hope in Duarte, Calif. Dr. Erhunmwunsee and colleagues used the National Cancer Data Base to gather information on 16,807 patients, of whom 6,147 were treated with esophagectomy for esophageal cancer (stages I-III) between 2003 and 2011. Patients were grouped using median income by zip code. Black patients made up 5% (293) of those who underwent esophagectomy, and 40.3% (2,476) of patients were in the lowest two income quartiles. Before adjusting for outside factors (age, sex, other health factors, etc.), black patients had worse overall survival compared to white patients (median survival was 33 vs. 46 months, respectively), and each lower income grouping was associated with progressively worse survival. “These results show that poorer patients are at a higher risk of death following surgery,” said Dr. Erhunmwunsee. “This disparity likely is based on many factors—minority patients and patients with lower socioeconomic status often smoke more, have poor eating habits, exercise less, and are exposed to environmental hazards, all of which lead to worse health. And specifically, increased smoking and poorer eating habits can increase the risk of esophageal cancer.” After adjusting for outside factors, both black race and lower income group remained significantly associated with worse overall survival; however, there was no difference in survival rates among black and white patients in the highest two income groups. A significant difference still remained between black and white patients in the lowest income groups (median survival was 26 vs. 40 months, respectively), indicating a racial and economic disparity. “Prior studies have shown that ethnic minority and poor patients who have access to care may still get inappropriate treatment; however, even when they do receive adequate therapy (surgery), as in this study, disparities are prevalent,” said Dr. Erhunmwunsee. “These finding are important to patients because being aware of the factors that are linked to higher death rates can empower patients to be more active with their own health and medical care. We also hope that awareness of the problem among physicians and patients alike will lead to more public and professional focus on solving this disparity through strategies aimed at health policy, practices of health systems, and training of health care providers.”

Obamacare Update – Right on the Money – Part 1 of 5

10:02
Sub Headline: A Refresher on the Affordable Care Act Synopsis: On March 23, 2010, a landmark healthcare law was passed which would fundamentally change the health insurance market as we knew it, and would have a direct effect on almost all Americans. With a seemingly endless stream of new regulations and requirements, coupled with the politically polarizing nature of the issue, it has proven quite easy to become confused with what is required of us. This illustrates the glaring lack of unbiased information, presented in easily understood terminology, and with no political slant. Content: It may be hard to believe, but this past March marked the six-year anniversary of the incredibly complex Affordable Care Act (ACA) being passed. Not surprisingly, many are still in a state of confusion regarding certain aspects of the law, and how they may or may not be affected by the law. The first and most important piece of the law that needs to be understood is the individual mandate. Simply put, the ACA requires most individuals to obtain acceptable health insurance coverage for themselves and their family members, or pay a financial penalty for not doing so. This rule became effective on January 1, 2014. In order to be able to implement this rule, some major changes had to be made in the health insurance industry as it stood, so everyone would be able to qualify for coverage without being discriminated against. This meant insurers would no longer be allowed to medically underwrite, and could not rider-out or exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions, nor would insurers be allowed to have two different sets of rates based on gender. This means, for example, a 40-year-old woman undergoing cancer treatment would not only be approved for a medical insurance plan with no medical questions asked, but her rate would be exactly the same as a perfectly healthy male of the same age, living in the same zip code, on the exact same plan. Furthermore, the law also features an employer mandate for businesses who meet a defined threshold in terms of number of full-time and “full-time-equivalent” employees. These employers are referred to under the ACA as “Applicable Large Employers” or ALE’s. If we simply leave it at that, then all of this seems very simple; however, it all gets much more complex from that point. Granted, the individual mandate is very simple – purchase compliant coverage for yourself and your family, and you will not be penalized. Fail to do so, and be penalized. For businesses, however, many are left feeling they are in an impossible labyrinth of determining size, market segment, measurement periods and a whole host of other requirements the law has imposed on businesses as a result of this law. And, this is all without mentioning all of the pitfalls and penalties that exist should a business fail to get all of this right! Watch the video interview with Kathy Garza, a group and individual health insurance expert and contributing author on all topics Obamacare and health insurance. Kathy uses easy-to-understand terminology to help individuals and business owners familiarize themselves with the requirements so they don’t face financial penalties due to non-compliance. The ACA is an incredibly complex law that started out with 2,700 pages and has since seen an additional 20,000 pages worth of amendments. This is enough to make anyone’s head spin, which reinforces the need for industry experts, such as Kathy Garza, to help navigate and provide strategies to manage the complexities related to the law. In this day and age, it’s all about minimizing the risk for financial penalties, which can, in some instances, be stiff enough to make a company close its doors for good. Nationally syndicated financial columnist Steve Savant interviews employee benefit specialist Kathy Garza on the Obamacare Update. Right on the Money is a weekly one-hour online broadcast for TV and radio distribution. The show contains five ten-minute segments that are redistributed online as individual video press releases. Health Equity Animated: Race

01:35
Minnesota consistently ranks as one of the healthiest states in the nation. Yet health outcomes, and opportunities to live a healthy lifestyle, vary greatly depending on who you are and where you live. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota believes that all people, regardless of race, income, zip code or other factors, should have opportunities to live the healthiest lives possible. Race impacts health outcomes. In Minnesota, only 22% of Somali immigrants have been screened for colorectal cancer, compared to 40% of those born in Laos and 70% of white patients. Only 25% of Native Americans are receiving optimal diabetes care, compared to 27% of African Americans and 41% of white patients. The mortality rate for African American infants born in Minnesota is double that of white infants. In “Barriers, Trauma, and Fear” we look at the experience of visiting the hospital through the lens of racism, bias, and fear. COAL -- both a blessing and a curse

1/2/2011 - http://www.pressconnects.com/article/20110102/VIEWPOINTS02/101020320/Cancer-Cluster-Linked-to-Coal- (Excerpt) The coal-burning plant is NRG Energy Inc.'s Indian River complex and is located in Millsboro, Delaware. The study was conducted by examining the cancer cases in a six ZIP code area around the plant. The areas examined were Dagsboro, Frankford, Georgetown, Millsboro, Ocean View and Selbyville. The Division of Public Health study showed an incidence of 553.9 cancer cases per 100,000 residents of this area between 2000 and 2004 compared with the Delaware state rate of 501.3 and the U.S. rate of 473.6 cancer cases per 100,000 residents. Thus, this study confirmed that the rate of cancer cases in this area is 17 percent higher than the national average. -- This is excerpted from the 61-minute Coal Consciousnes, Chapter 6 in Recreating Conciousness -- http://vimeo.com/10422604 --- There have been economic studies for the states of Kentucky and West Virginia with controversial conclusions that coal mining is either benefical or costly. Bill O'Riely of Fox News, opinionates that Appalachia is impovished by its culture and not by its coal mining - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLkc6LJmtNs Diane Sawyer, who grew up there, takes a different view in her ABC News special (February 2009) "A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains" ( two years following children growing up in poverty in the mountains of eastern Kentucky; isolated pockets in central Appalachia have three times the national poverty rate, an epidemic of prescription drug abuse, the shortest life span in the nation, toothlessness, cancer and chronic depression) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocqTQBk_aco Both good and bad have come from coal mining and its environmental effects, especially so, from what's known as Mountain Top Removal surface coal mining (recently being termed Mountain Development by the mining industry). === Coal Consciousness (61 minutes): http://vimeo.com/10422604 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=884Q06Zsgtg 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caPNTO3fTjc 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUMwtgiUUeA 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJWefqw0hWg 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vVL-_UIW-g 6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_UP3I45wtk 7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM8BfA3cHKY

Facing your fears with a purpose | Cindy Sebek | TEDxSanAntonio

07:16
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Cindy shares ways in which one person can make a significant difference by facing their fears and finding courage to follow through with their own big idea. The difference between simply having big ideas and actually making those ideas come to life stems from overcoming your fears, believing in yourself, and having determination, perseverance, and (the biggest reason) the “why.” Her own big idea was to make a difference in hunger using a bottle of wine as a “one-for-one” business model. For every bottle of The Gracious Gift Wine purchased, meals are donated to that area’s local food bank (zip code specific). For example, in San Antonio, 1 Bottle = 7 meals donated to the SA Food Bank. The unique thing about this wine is it makes a local impact. It’s important that consumers know they are helping out their hungry neighbors in need. This idea in action has provided more than 60,000 meals year to date. Cindy Sebek is founder and president of The Gracious Gift Wines. A successful sales professional in the medical industry for 12 years, consistently recognized for her leadership and sales skills, she has won President’s Council trips (top 10% of the sales force) three times, serves on a sales advisory team, and helped create a women’s leadership forum within her company. Cindy is a full-time servant to others and is contagiously optimistic. She has always believed in the importance of being a contributing member to her church, and her passions are her faith, family, and friends. Her strong professional drive has established her as someone who will follow through on every commitment she makes. Her belief that she can help others go to bed without being hungry is something that drives her passion in the fight against hunger. In nine months, her company has provided over 60,000 meals to children and people all over Texas and Illinois. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

On May 23rd over 100 people marched at the foot of the Peace Bridge to call on Governor Cuomo to install an air monitor at the base of the bridge and truck plaza. Our membership, faith and community leaders marched after repeated requests for air monitoring were ignored by DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. A study showed that 45% of West Side households reported at least one case of chronic respiratory illness or asthma. The study also points to the trucks at the Peace Bridge Plaza as a cause. Additionally, the New York State Department of Health operates a Cancer Registry which shows that incidence of both lung and bronchus cancers were elevated for residents of the zip code closest to the Peace Bridge.

Petro Metro: A Toxic Tour of Houston from Refineries to Superfund Sites in Wake of Harvey

31:18
https://democracynow.org - In Texas, the devastation from Hurricane Harvey continues. At least 63 people have died, more than 40,000 homes have been lost, and as many 1 million cars have been destroyed. Meanwhile, the long-term environmental impact of the storm is just beginning to be felt. The Center for Biological Diversity reports flooded oil refineries and chemical plants released as much as 5 million pounds of pollutants into the air during the storm. On Friday night, another large fire broke out at the flooded Arkema chemical plant in Crosby, Texas. Then, on Sunday, authorities set fire to six remaining containers of chemicals in what was described as a controlled burn. The company continues to refuse to inform local residents of what chemicals burned at the site. For more, Democracy Now!'s Amy Goodman, Renée Feltz and Hany Massoud take a "toxic tour" of Houston's fenceline communities, led by environmental justice organizer Bryan Parras. Why They Buy: Fighting Obesity Through Consumer Marketing Research

01:16:54
Historical “one-size-fits-all” health policies have failed to stem the rise in obesity in America, with nearly two-thirds of the population categorized as overweight or obese. A new study to be released by Hudson Institute’s Food Policy Center addresses the obesity epidemic by applying consumer marketing techniques to segment consumers on the basis of their body mass index. The study identifies the major differences in the attitudes and behaviors of normal and obese weight populations to inform and craft more effective policy solutions to the obesity crisis. The findings reveal divergent attitudes and behaviors towards healthier eating; which indulgent products are being purchased; whether package labels are read; how much each weight segment exercises; and differences in mindsets. In addition, current approaches will be challenged and recommendations will be offered to food companies, the public health community, and regulators about how they can help reverse soaring obesity rates. To examine these important issues, on Thursday, June 14, Hudson Institute hosted a presentation of report highlights and a conversation with Dr. Bill Dietz, Chair and Director of the Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness in the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University; Tracey Massey, President, Americas, for Mars Wrigley Confectionery; and Hank Cardello, Hudson Senior Fellow and Director of the Food Policy Center.

Drivers Are Overpaying By Not Following One Simple Rule

00:27
This is the one simple truth your car insurance company doesn’t want you to know. If you are currently insured, drive less than 40 miles per day and live in a qualified zip code you can get an extremely high discount. Additionally, if you have no DUI’s, you can get even more discounts. But do you think your auto insurance company will tell you that? When drivers enter their zip code and vehicle information at Provide-Savings.com, many are shocked at the results they find. We weren’t surprised when we got questions from drivers if these rates are real. The truth is people say it‘s possible to save up to 50% on their car insurance costs and some say they were eligible for rates as low as $13/week due to recent insurance policy changes. When we heard about these claims, we decided to investigate it for ourselves.
