FHMMC opens Cancer Institute

01:18
Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center opened its new state-of-the-art comprehensive Cancer Institute to patients on Thursday, Oct. 7, eliminating the need for cancer patients having to travel out of the area to receive different aspects of their treatment. The new 1-story, 30,000-square-foot facility cost approximately $15 million for the first phase, with shell space to accommodate additional capacity as the need for comprehensive cancer services grows in the community. Inside, there are 14 exam rooms and a 30-person staff, including newly created positions of breast care and lung care navigators. These staff members will walk patients through every aspect of their cancer journey, from diagnosis up until five years after they are discharged. The center has a capacity to treat up to 80 patients a day using two radiation oncology vaults and will treat up to 18 chemotherapy patients each day.

Florida Hospital DeLand Cancer Institute Expansion

01:03
News clips from Channel 9 and Channel 13 in Orlando, covering Florida Hospital DeLand's Cancer Institute expansion. Florida Hospital DeLand Cancer Institute celebrated the completion of its $5.2 million expansion today, Sunday, August 21, 2011. As part of the expansion, the facility's size was increased by more than 25 percent and is now more than 7,800 square feet. Additionally, both the interior and exterior of the existing building was renovated to mirror the hospital's current façade. In addition to the construction, the Florida Hospital DeLand Cancer Institute upgraded the tecnology available to fight cancer by adding the latest tools in radiation oncology, including Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) and Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT). Tissues, organs, and many tumors are not rigidly fixed in one position. They can move several centimeters inside the body due to natural physiological processes, such as breathing. Because of this, IGRT Respiratory Gating is essential to tracking and targeting tumors with radiation. This feature provides more precise tumor targeting, which means radiation beam dosage levels can be increased, allowing tumors to receive a higher dose of radiation while nearby healthy tissues receive very little. With Florida Hospital DeLand's new GE Discovery PET-CT 600, doctors can better determine whether a mass is malignant (cancerous) or benign (not cancerous). This equipment has highly-advanced capabilities, which include: the highest image-sensitivity in the industry; improved image quality of scans in areas prone to motion, such as in the lungs; and a comfortable bed for patients up to 500 pounds, limiting the effects of claustrophobia.

Pediatric Cancer Care - Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders

05:40
The Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders helps your child and family throughout the entire cancer journey — from diagnosis to survivorship and beyond. With our long-time membership and leadership in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a world-renowned organization exclusively dedicated to pediatric cancer research, we offer the most advanced treatments available in a compassionate, family-centered environment. Our expert pediatric hematologists and oncologists at the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (or “NCCBD,” for short) work closely with our board-certified specialists representing many medical disciplines from the Delaware Valley (Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington, Delaware) and throughout Florida (Nemours Chilcren's Hospital, Orlando, Florida; Nemours Children's Specialty Care, Jacksonville, Florida; Nemours Children's Clinic, Pensacola, Florida) to offer families world-class care. Nemours is also one of only two National Cancer Institute-designated pediatric Community Oncology Research Programs (or “NCORPs”) in the nation. As an NCORP institute, we work together, across our campuses in the North and South, to give kids with cancer truly comprehensive, well-informed care. For example, many children benefit from our weekly system-wide “tumor board” meetings, when specialists representing various medical disciplines in the Delaware Valley and throughout Florida come together to discuss complex cancer cases. It’s like getting a second opinion from the nation’s best pediatric cancer doctors and scientists without making an appointment. As an established system of pediatric oncology and hematology care, we pool our expertise and resources across our campuses to give your child the most comprehensive care possible. Together, our goal is simple: To get your child back to being a kid as soon as possible. At Nemours, we do everything in our power to beat childhood cancer and to bring your family real hope for brighter days to come.

Florida Hospital Unveils Rooms of New Women’s Hospital

02:57
From convertible couches to décor and artwork that hide medical equipment to expanded family rooms, the new Florida Hospital for Women in Orlando will be tailored to the modern woman. Over the last year, Florida Hospital staff – from physicians and nurses to nutritional services and housekeeping – have given key insight on the design of the new women’s hospital, and this week they were able to view the results as Florida Hospital debuted mock patient rooms. Slated to open late next year, rooms at Florida Hospital for Women will be spacious and have plenty room for family and loved ones to visit, and even spend the night. Rooms will include a sofa that converts into a bed, has a foldout table for families to share a meal, use for workspace, or display baby pictures. The new hospital will truly be a destination for women of all ages, and will include features such as the only milk depot in Central Florida and the High Risk Breast Center. One of the considerations Florida Hospital took in designing the new building is women with high risk pregnancies, who often spend a month or more in the hospital. Often, these patients miss out on the simple joys of pregnancy, such as a baby shower. That’s why there will be gathering areas for patients and families to come together with their friends and loved ones for celebrations. Additionally, a balcony will allow high-risk patients to step out of their rooms and get fresh air while still remaining close to medical care. Florida Hospital for Women is designed to be a soothing environment and great efforts are being made to make patients feel at home. Much of the medical equipment one might expect to see in a hospital is concealed behind headwalls, which were created to be an artistic piece that adds light and beauty to the room, giving the room a less clinical feel but still allowing nurses to have easy access to essential items. Small touches like customizable lighting and temperature and “Mom’s Sleeping – Do Not Disturb” signs will help to make a hospital stay less stressful. The 12-story, 332-bed hospital facility will lead the way in a new era of women’s health and offer comprehensive services including: obstetrics, maternal fetal medicine (high-risk obstetrics), gynecologic oncology, minimally invasive women’s surgery, neonatal intensive care, digital mammography, women’s cardiovascular, and wellness and education. Three years ago, Florida Hospital announced a renewed commitment to women’s services that will span across Central Florida with three new buildings and additional services. Celebration Health Women’s Institute and Florida Hospital for Women at Winter Park Memorial Hospital are already caring for patients. The final building, Florida Hospital for Women at Florida Hospital Orlando, is scheduled to open in 2015. In addition, Florida Hospital recently re-designed and expanded the offerings at the Baby Place at Florida Hospital Altamonte.

WKMG News6 Orlando: Child Fighting Cancer Creates Hospital Friendly T-Shirts

02:02
ORLANDO, Fla. - A 9-year-old boy fighting cancer is finding strength by spreading comfort to other children with a special T-shirt. Luke Lange came up with the idea during his hospital stays in Fort Worth, Texas, when he had to wear a hospital gown. Luke said the hospital gown made him “feel more sick.” "He said, 'I hate the hospital gowns. I just want to feel like a normal kid.' And so (he) and his mom cut up the sides of his T-shirts and sewed in snap tape," said Britton Lynn, Luke's babysitter. His design, called Luke’s FastBreaks, works like tearaway basketball pants, with snaps sewn up the sides to allow for easy access to IVs, lines and ports. It didn't take long for the idea to spread to more children's hospitals, including Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando. "It's amazing, especially for a little boy to think of it and be so selfless and think of others," said Bethany Vanhorn, the mother of a 2-year-old patient at Nemours. The Luke’s FastBreaks medical shirts come in pink, navy, black, blue, camouflage, purple, white and red. The sizes range from toddler to youth all the way up to adult XXL, allowing every child and teenager who is staying in the hospital for a long time a shirt that fits properly. The shirts are donated to oncology and hematology patients at hospitals free of charge. As of November, 5,000 medical shirts have been donated through the nonprofit to children in 17 states, 25 cities and 30 hospitals and Ronald McDonald House Charities. Currently there is the Burnham Institute, University of Central Florida, MD Anderson Cancer Institute, Nemours children's hospital (Scheduled to open summer of 2012) and the VA hospital which sits on 65 acres of land, it will be a hospital, assisted living and a nursing home. This VA hospital will service 3,800 patients a day and is scheduled to be open October of 2012. We are excited about the job creation and growth that Lake Nona Medical City will bring to the south east part of Orlando not to mention its only 20 minutes from the number one attraction Disney!
