And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry. Structure of the Court System: Crash Course Government and Politics #19

06:59
This week Craig Benzine is going to talk about the structure of the U.S. court system and how exactly it manages to keep things moving smoothly. We’’ll talk about trial courts, district courts, appeals courts, circuit courts, state supreme courts, and of course the one at the top - the U.S. Supreme Court. It’s all quite a bit to manage with jurisdictions and such, but it's important to remember that the vast majority of cases never even make it to court! Most are settled out of court, but also terms like mootness and ripeness are used to throw cases out altogether. Today, we're going to focus on how cases make it to the top, and next week we’ll talk about what happens when they get there. Great geometry primer on perimeter and area. Listen carefully. Sal explains the concepts so you'll understand them. Practice this lesson yourself on KhanAcademy.org right now: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry/basic-geometry/perimeter_area_tutorial/e/area_of_triangles_1?utm_source=YT&utm_medium=Desc&utm_campaign=Geometry Watch the next lesson: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry/basic-geometry/perimeter_area_tutorial/v/triangle-area-proofs?utm_source=YT&utm_medium=Desc&utm_campaign=Geometry Missed the previous lesson? https://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry/right_triangles_topic/cc-geometry-trig-similarity/v/example-relating-trig-function-to-side-ratios?utm_source=YT&utm_medium=Desc&utm_campaign=Geometry Geometry on Khan Academy: We are surrounded by space. About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content. For free. For everyone. Water On The Moon

http://www.facebook.com/ScienceReason ... LCROSS Impact: Water On The Moon. NASA confirmed water was detected when the Centaur rocket hit the moon. Where did it come from? Whats next? Will we develop a lunar outpost? One big answer leads to many bigger questions. --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • http://www.youtube.com/Best0fScience • http://www.youtube.com/ScienceTV • http://www.youtube.com/FFreeThinker --- LCROSS Impact Data Indicates Water on Moon: The argument that the moon is a dry, desolate place no longer holds water. Secrets the moon has been holding, for perhaps billions of years, are now being revealed to the delight of scientists and space enthusiasts alike. NASA opened a new chapter in our understanding of the moon. Preliminary data from the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, indicates that the mission successfully uncovered water during the Oct. 9, 2009 impacts into the permanently shadowed region of Cabeus cater near the moons south pole. The impact created by the LCROSS Centaur upper stage rocket created a two-part plume of material from the bottom of the crater. The first part was a high angle plume of vapor and fine dust and the second a lower angle ejecta curtain of heavier material. This material has not seen sunlight in billions of years. • http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LCROSS/main/prelim_water_results.html --- The California Academy of Sciences is a world-class scientific and cultural institution based in San Francisco. Time Travel Academy

Time Travel Academy. A corporation convinces the government to take part in its time travel mission by utilizing the Time Travel Academy. Their plan was to terraform Mars by going backwards in time 3 billion years and stopping an asteroid from striking Mars; if successful Mars would become like Earth and its resources would be for the taking. Their plan was solid yet what they didn't anticipate was that in 3 billion years Mars would develop a civilization of its own, a warlike malevolent civilization bent on destroying Earth. UFO Sighting Over California, Oregon, Nevada This Week 2014

02:24
http://RealUFO.tv Today's UFO Sighting : A bright UFO is caught on video this week CONCORD (CBS SF) — People across the Bay Area reported seeing a streak of light shoot across the sky Friday around 6 a.m. Claycord.com said about 30 residents saw a white light with fog or smoke billowing out. “I am used to seeing planes early in the morning with lights, but this was different,” said one bystander. “This had something coming out of it, it wasn’t just the light. I could see it spraying something.” Mosquito fogging in Contra Costa County isn’t done by air, but by truck, and there were no plans to fog for mosquitoes in the area. The light was also spotted by Barry Formslag of Novato. “About 6 a.m. this morning, I came out, I was walking down the driveway and I looked up at the sky and saw this little orange ball – above the Redwood trees,” Formslag told KPIX 5. The UFO phenomenon was also reported in Nevada and Oregon. KPIX 5 went to Bing Quock of the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences. “Looking at the website of the American Meteor Society, it looks like there are several reports of a large bright object falling through the sky,” he said. “It’s rather unusual in that this one had a rather large tail following behind it.” When asked if it’s related to the upcoming solar storm, Quock said, “There’s probably no relation between the two.” Gerald McKeegan of the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland also offered up his conclusions. “We’re thinking maybe it was either a piece of space junk that has fallen out of orbit and into our atmosphere or it might have been some kind of a missile test launch,” McKeegan said. The U.S. Air Force said that there was no missile launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Central California on Friday morning. NASA Video From the Far Side of the Moon-02/01/2012

00:58
From NASA.gov: PASADENA, Calif. -- A camera aboard one of NASA's twin Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) lunar spacecraft has returned its first unique view of the far side of the moon. MoonKAM, or Moon Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students, will be used by students nationwide to select lunar images for study. GRAIL consists of two identical spacecraft, recently named Ebb and Flow, each of which is equipped with a MoonKAM. The images were taken as part of a test of Ebb's MoonKAM on Jan. 19. The GRAIL project plans to test the MoonKAM aboard Flow at a later date. To view the 30-second video clip, visit: http://go.nasa.gov/zZXAPs . In the video, the north pole of the moon is visible at the top of the screen as the spacecraft flies toward the lunar south pole. One of the first prominent geological features seen on the lower third of the moon is the Mare Orientale, a 560-mile-wide (900 kilometer) impact basin that straddles both the moon's near and far side. The clip ends with rugged terrain just short of the lunar south pole. To the left of center, near the bottom of the screen, is the 93-mile-wide (149 kilometer) Drygalski crater with a distinctive star-shaped formation in the middle. The formation is a central peak, created many billions of years ago by a comet or asteroid impact. "The quality of the video is excellent and should energize our MoonKAM students as they prepare to explore the moon," said Maria Zuber, GRAIL principal investigator from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. The twin spacecraft successfully achieved lunar orbit this past New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Previously named GRAIL-A and GRAIL-B, the washing machine-sized spacecraft received their new names from fourth graders at the Emily Dickinson Elementary School in Bozeman, Mont., following a nationwide student naming contest. Thousands of fourth- to eighth-grade students will select target areas on the lunar surface and send requests to the GRAIL MoonKAM Mission Operations Center in San Diego. Photos of the target areas will be sent back by the satellites for students to study. The MoonKAM program is led by Sally Ride, America's first woman in space. Her team at Sally Ride Science and undergraduate students at the University of California in San Diego will engage middle schools across the country in the GRAIL mission and lunar exploration. GRAIL is NASA's first planetary mission carrying instruments fully dedicated to education and public outreach. "We have had great response from schools around the country; more than 2,500 signed up to participate so far," Ride said. "In mid-March, the first pictures of the moon will be taken by students using MoonKAM. I expect this will excite many students about possible careers in science and engineering." Launched in September 2011, Ebb and Flow periodically perform trajectory correction maneuvers that, over time, will lower their orbits to near-circular ones with an altitude of about 34 miles (55 kilometers). During their science mission, the duo will answer longstanding questions about the moon and give scientists a better understanding of how Earth and other rocky planets in the solar system formed. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., manages the GRAIL mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The GRAIL mission is part of the Discovery Program managed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver built the spacecraft. For more information about GRAIL, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/grail . Information about MoonKAM is available at: https://moonkam.ucsd.edu . JPL is managed for NASA by the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Matt Weiser, senior writer for The Sacramento Bee, discusses California's water usage in a time of severe drought. "If the drought continues, San Juan Water District is going to adapt a stage 5 drought plan which is the most severe category they have. [...] that will mean mandatory no outdoor watering, 50% conservation in all your water use, no new hook ups to the water system." Speakers: Jean Fuller, California State Senator (R-Bakersfield) Lois Wolk, California State Senator (D-Davis) Matt Weiser, Senior Writer, The Sacramento Bee This program was recorded in front of a live audience on January 10, 2014. http://climate-one.org http://commonwealthclub.org
