Foods that Increase the Absorption of Iron Iron is an essential mineral your body needs to function properly. Thus, it’s vitally important to consume adequate amounts of it in your daily diet. Interestingly, the foods you eat influence not only how much iron you consume, but also how well it is absorbed into your body Foods That Help You Absorb More Iron While not all dietary iron is absorbed equally, some foods can enhance your body’s ability to absorb it. Foods Rich in Vitamin C Sliced Orange Vitamin C has been shown to enhance iron absorption. It captures non-heme iron and stores it in a form that’s more easily absorbed by your body. Foods high in vitamin C include citrus fruits, dark green leafy vegetables, bell peppers, melons and strawberries. In one study, taking 100 mg of vitamin C with a meal increased iron absorption by 67%. Hence, drinking citrus juice or eating other foods rich in vitamin C while you’re eating high-iron foods can increase your body’s absorption. Foods With Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene Vitamin A plays a critical role in maintaining healthy vision, bone growth and your immune system. Beta-carotene is a red-orange pigment found in plants and fruits. It can be turned into vitamin A in your body. Good food sources of beta-carotene and vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, squash, red peppers, cantaloupe, apricots, oranges and peaches. One study of 100 people given cereal-based meals found that the presence of vitamin A increased iron absorption by up to 200% for rice, 80% for wheat and 140% for corn. In the same study, adding beta-carotene to the meals increased absorption more than 300% for rice and 180% for wheat and corn. Meat, Fish and Poultry Cooked Chicken Breast Meat, fish and poultry not only provide well-absorbed heme iron, they can also stimulate absorption of the non-heme form. Several studies have reported that the addition of beef, chicken or fish to a cereal-based meal resulted in about 2–3 times greater non-heme iron absorption. Research has also shown that adding 75 grams of meat to a meal increased the absorption of non-heme iron by about 2.5 times, compared to a meal without it. Based on study findings, it was estimated that 1 gram of meat, fish or poultry provided an enhancing effect similar to that of 1 mg of vitamin C. Tips to Get Enough Iron The tips below can help you maximize your dietary iron intake: Eat lean red meat: This is the best source of easily absorbed heme iron. Eating it several times per week can help if you are deficient. Eat chicken and fish: These are also good sources of heme iron. Eat a variety of them. Consume vitamin C-rich foods: Eat vitamin C-rich foods during meals to increase the absorption of non-heme iron. Avoid coffee, tea or milk near meals: Avoid these during meals that contain iron-rich foods. Have your coffee or tea between meals instead. Choose foods rich in non-heme iron: If you don’t eat meat and fish, include plenty of iron-rich plant foods in your diet.

How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. Lightening (or removing dye) with Vitamin C and Shampoo
Please do not leave this product on your hair for more than an hour (actually, I'd go so far to say to not leave it on for more than 45 minutes). I've noticed over the few times that I've used this method to lighten my hair that it works best with removing dyed hair and will only lift your natural hair by maybe half a level. I've also noticed that after the 45 minute mark that the Vitamin C no longer lifts/lightens your hair color. Do understand that Vitamin C can make your hair feel straw-like if you leave it on for too long, as well as make you feel sick, and even burn your scalp. Always err on the side of caution!!! If your scalp is burning at all during this process, WASH IT OUT. Thank you, all, for your love and support. Vitamin C and Shampoo Recipe Ingredients: 50-60 pills of 1000mg Vitamin C, mashed into powder. 9ish Tablespoons of clear shampoo (I used Prell but it's probably best to use a shampoo without dyes in it) Mixing bowl A spray bottle, filled with water A plastic cap, or bag Instructions: Mix vitamin C and shampoo If you feel the mixture is too thick, add another tablespoon of shampoo. Apply to damp hair. If mixture isn't spreading easily and/or you've run out of mixture, spray more water onto hair and continue to lather in. Once hair is saturated with the mixture, cover with a plastic cap (or bag) and leave for 30-60 minutes. Rinse out, wash with shampoo, and deep condition as this will make your hair dry. Make your own Vitamin C (Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium or Calcium Ascorbate)
Why? Soluble Vitamin C is much better absorbed than Vitamin C in tablet form: ~16-30 % of Vitamin C in tablets is absorbed v's ~75 % of Vitamin C in soluble form. How? 3 Ingredients: 1) Ascorbic acid AKA raw vitamin C powder (C6H8O6) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascorbic_acid 2) Bicarbonate of soda AKA baking soda (NaHCO3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_bicarbonate 3) Water (H2O) Instructions: 1) Pour 1" of water in a glass 2) Add one teaspoon of Ascorbic acid (which does not fully dissolve) 3) Add 1/2 a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 4) After fizzing stops add water to the top (the water is now clear VitC is fully dissolved) NB.You are making sodium ascorbate and the fizz is carbon dioxide Note: Too much Vitamin C has a laxative effect. Take a 1/2 glass then wait 2 hours and take the other half. The half life of Vitamin C is only 30 minutes therefore in 2 hours you have ~1/16 the original dose. Don't take the second dose if you feel the laxative effect coming on. The laxative effect is fairly mild unless you take a LARGE spoonful. 1 teaspoon flat is 2-4 g of Vitamin C. The best time to take Vitamin C is when you are unwell. You can also try magnesium bicarbonate, calcium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate to buffer VitC. If you're taking a lot of sodium ascorbate the potassium in particular is the counter ion to sodium and has a calming effect. Calcium (contraction) and magnesium (relaxation) work against each other and taking them in a 1:1 ratio is usually a good way to balance them. Magnesium tends to potentiate the laxative effect so take the dose slowly rather than in one hit. Mg, Ca and K ascorbates taste better if you leave them to react for about 30 minutes. Although if you're deficient in one of those minerals you'll often like the tangy bitter taste and won't care. If you accidentally take too much VitC a capsule or two of activated charcoal will rapidly (within minutes) stop the laxative effect. There, promotional posters continuously influenced my food selections advertising milk and bananas. According to the school system, getting my daily dose of calcium and potassium was vital for my growth. That’s all you hear about as a child. You never know why you are doing something. You are only told how “good” or “not good” it is for you. I didn’t know what calcium or potassium even was at that age. Once I grew up to be big and strong I went to college and got my degree in Food and Nutrition Sciences with a concentration in Dietetics. It was only then I was taught the truth behind all of these food combos that I had been exposed to my entire upbringing. I finally learned the true meaning behind meal planning, and now I am hear to give you a small taste into the chemistry behind why foods are recommended together due to their nutritional density. Timing is everything when it comes to taking your vitamins and supplements, so we've put together a guide to help you maximize the powerful health benefits that come from taking them at the right time. Read more about this on our blog: http://blog.professionalsupplementcenter.com/the-best-time-to-take-nutritional-supplements/ Morning: -Probiotics - Probiotics are best taken in the morning on an empty stomach. • When the stomach is empty, digestive activity is quiet and stomach acid and pH balance are relatively low, increasing the chances for the helpful microorganisms to thrive. -Iron - Iron is best absorbed in the morning on an empty stomach. • Caffeine, dairy and calcium can negatively affect absorption, so it's best to avoid these for several hours after taking iron. -Multivitamins - Take multivitamins with your first meal. In the morning! • As multivitamins contain both water and fat soluble vitamins, be sure to include some healthy fats with your meal for optimal absorption. -B-Complex vitamins - Taking B vitamins with breakfast helps to boost your metabolism and convert your food into energy, which can be used throughout the day. -Vitamin C- Vitamin C is best taken in the morning to support the immune system and boost energy levels. • Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin that lasts only a few hours in the blood stream, so if your formula recommends more than 1 tablet per day, take it in divided doses with meals to get the full benefit. Noon: -CoQ10 - CoQ10 is best taken at lunch time with a meal that contains dietary fats. • Avoid taking CoQ10 late in the day so it doesn't disturb your sleep. -Vitamin D - Vitamin D is best taken with a meal that contains dietary fats. • It's possible that Vitamin D can negatively affect sleep, so lunch time is a good time to get your Vitamin D. -Iodine - Iodine is not stored in the body, so regular intake is needed. kelp tablets taken with lunch may boost midday energy levels. -Vitamin K - Vitamin K is best absorbed along with dietary fats and ideally should be taken during the middle of the day. • Avoid taking vitamin K if you are taking Coumadin or any anticoagulant prescription drug, as Vitamin K can interfere with the effects of the medication. Night: - Fish oil - Important to support many aspects of health, fish oil is best taken with a main meal like dinner to aid absorption. -Calcium - Calcium aids nerve transmission and muscle function. To get the full benefit, take calcium in the evening along with magnesium. -Magnesium - Magnesium has a calming effect on the muscles and nervous system and may aid restful sleep. • Magnesium works synergistically with calcium, so take these together either as individual supplements or in a combined formula. In addition: -Digestive Enzymes - Digestive enzymes can be taken with any meal or within 30 minutes of your meal. Unless you have serious digestive issues, they don't necessarily need to be taken with light meals or snacks, but can be very beneficial for optimal breakdown and absorption of nutrients when taken with main meals. -Fiber - Fiber supplements may be taken either first thing in the morning or before bed. Thanks for coming back. It's Eric Bakker, the naturopath. We're going to talk now about some treatment for mast cell activation syndrome. What are some of the best treatment solutions. We've just spoke about diet. And if you're unsure, check out the diet video I did and click on some of the links under there to look at some of the low-histamine diets that you may want to follow. If you've got quite a powerful response and you really believe it's histamine, you may want to look further at salicylate sensitivity and oxalate sensitivity. You could have a little bit of both of those as well. Right? So let's look at now some of the best things you can take if you've got this problem. Well, nothing beats doing the diet, so you really want to make sure you're following the correct diet first. So if you haven't seen the diet video, go back and look at that before you engage in the proper treatment now alright. So, one of the first things I'd recommend would be vitamin C. So, you can take vitamin C in different forms. You can take it in an ester form. You can take it in a buffered form, you know, along with calcium and magnesium ascorbates, for example. You can take it in ascorbic acid form. There are many types. I prefer the buffered form. Ester C is quite okay as well. Natural vs Synthetic Ascorbic Acid Natural and synthetic L-ascorbic acid are chemically identical, and there are no known difference in their biological activity. The possibility that the bioavailability of L-ascorbic acid from natural sources might differ from that of synthetic ascorbic acid was investigated in at least two human studies, and no clinically significant differences were observed. Ascorbic Deficiency The following problems should be expected with increased incidence with severe depletion of ascorbate: disorders of the immune system such as secondary infections, rheumatoid arthritis and other collagen diseases, allergic reactions to drugs, foods and other substances, chronic infections such as herpes, or sequelae of acute infections such as Guillain-Barre and Reye's syndromes, rheumatic fever, or scarlet fever, disorders of the blood coagulation mechanisms such as hemorrhage, heart attacks, strokes, hemorrhoids and other vascular thrombosis; failure to cope properly with stresses due to suppression of the adrenal functions such as phlebitis, other inflammatory disorders, asthma and other allergies; problems of disordered collagen formation such as impaired ability to heal, excessive scarring, bed sores, varicose veins, hernias, stretch marks, wrinkles, perhaps even wear of cartilage or degeneration of spinal discs; impaired function of the nervous system such as malaise, decreased pain tolerance, and cancer from suppressed immune system and carcinogens not detoxified, etc. Note: I am not saying that ascorbate depletion is the only cause of the disorders, but I am pointing out that disorders of the systems would certainly predispose to the diseases and that these systems are known to be dependent upon ascorbate for their proper function. Not only is there the theoretical probability that these types of complications associated with infections or stresses could result from ascorbate depletion, but there was a conspicuous decrease in the expected occurrence of complications in the thousands of patients treated with oral tolerance doses or intravenous doses of ascorbate. This impression of marked decrease in these problems is shared by physicians experienced with the use of ascorbate such as Klenner and KaloKerinos. Successful Dosing For very severe illness, the dose he used was large and the most effective route was intravenous, but the intramuscular route was satisfactory. He gave at least 350 mg per kilogram of body weight (a 70 kg man is 150 pounds; thus 70 x 350 = 24,500 mg). This amount was put in 500cc of sterile water, usually dextrose, saline or Ringer's solution. It was diluted so that there was at least 18cc of diluent to each gram of C. Maintenance Doses Maintenance doses are established by the patient taking bowel tolerance doses 6 times a day for at least a week. He observes if there is any unexpected benefit such as clearing of sinuses, decrease in allergies, increase in energy, etc. Should any chronic problem be benefited, then the dose is decreased to the minimum amount producing the effect. Otherwise, a dose such as 4 to 10 grams a day divided in 3-4 doses is recommended. Patients who take ascorbate in large amounts over a long period of time should probably supplement with vitamin A and multiple mineral preparation. How to make Sodium Ascorbate Sodium Ascorbate is a buffered form of Vitamin C that consists of 90% Ascorbic Acid bound to 10% Sodium. This is the optimal form of Vitamin C for intravenous injection. So, if you have 100 grams of ascorbic acid then you would need 10 grams of baking soda, then add distilled water--so your ratio is 9:1. When adding water this mixture will begin to fizz. Mix gently until fizzing stops. What you have left is sodium ascorbate. Formula -8 grams of Ascorbic Acid -500mgs of potassium bicarb -sodium bicarbonate -magnesium citrate -30 mgs of zinc Generally, the ratios are almost 100-160:10 or thereabouts This will allow for better uptake of the minerals and the buffered C

Fortunately, this isn’t the only option! There is a much more natural way to remove semi-permanent, permanent, and even henna dyes from your hair with little to no damage. It’s a simple little ingredient called Vitamin C, and most of us have a bottle of it in our medicine cabinet! 15-25 Vitamin C Tablets or 1/4-1/2 Cup of Ascorbic Acid Powder 1/4-1/2 Cup Shampoo (clarifying works best but any shampoo will do) 1 TBSP Conditioner (optional) Plastic Mixing Bowl Shower Cap Place the Vitamin C tablets in a ziploc bag and crush into a fine powder with a rolling pin. You can also use a spice grinder to get a super fine texture. (If using Ascorbic Acid powder, measure out 1/4-1/2 cup into a plastic bowl depending on your hair length.) Place the Vitamin C powder into your bowl. Add your shampoo of choice to the Vitamin C powder and mix well until you get a thick, creamy consistency, almost like a paste. All I gotta' do is learn how to hit those veins. ADDED 06/09/2015: This seems to be a very confusing subject. Vitamin C Foundation, for example, states that only sodium ascorbate be used and that ascorbic acid is too acidic. Yet in the same article they later state: "Ascorbic acid (hydrogen ascorbate) is highly reactive, and the most powerful and fastest acting form of vitamin C. The Vitamin C Foundation believes that the ascorbic acid form of vitamin C is more potent fighting infections, and may be better against heart disease. However, it is too acidic to safely use intravenously. Ascorbic acid must be buffered for IV, or sodium ascorbate can be mixed with water for IV." This seems to imply that ascorbic acid is actually "better", but needs to be buffered. The product manufactured by Merit Pharmaceutical states it is ascorbic acid that has been "buffered" with sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide. I get my IVC at the Riordan Clinic, in Wichita, Kansas, which has been performing IV vitamin C for more than 30 years. I'll trust them to take good care of me. I think it's safe to safe that ascorbic acid should not be used without proper buffering. Greetings, it's Eric Becker, the naturopath. The question today is can Vitamin D cause constipation? Well it can, but only in extremely rare cases. You'd have to take an incredible amount of Vitamin D to get serious side effects from it. In all the years I've worked with patients I've never seen a serious side effect on Vitamin D. Even when I work with people up to 25,000 international units per day, three or four times that dose, 75,000 units per day for weeks on end, months on end for treating acne. And I've not seen any bad effects come from Vitamin D. However, if you're drinking a bottle of whiskey a day and you're taking 5000 units of Vitamin D can be seriously bad 'cause you're impairing your liver function. So if you're doing dumb things like taking lots of Tylenol, paracetamol, ibuprofen, Valium, Paxil, if you're taking all these drugs like candy and taking Vitamin D, that can be a problem. And that's what I see some patients do is they'll take five to six medications per day and then they'll pop a few Vitamin C or D tablets and they'll think, "Oh I'll just clean my liver out from all this toxicity." But you can't do that. You need to see someone like me or a doctor or someone who understands the interaction of drugs and supplements otherwise you're going to be in hot water. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and you've got four of them. You've got Vitamin A, D, E and K. They're all fat soluble. Now healthy people like me, they don't usually have any problems at all with fat soluble vitamins 'cause they don't really do crazy things like drink tons of alcohol or smoke or do dumb things like that. They don't take handfuls of drugs all the time so their liver's pretty clean and tidy. It can easily process the fat soluble vitamin. The digestive system is in good condition. It can break the fat soluble down properly and absorb it and excrete the waste products. That's how the body's meant to operate. When the body's poisoned, however, with takeaway foods, lots of Coca-Cola and alcohol, when you pay lip service to diet and eat whatever, then you could have some problems with Vitamin D. This is why doctors unfortunately always zoom in on Vitamin D saying it's toxic, it's bad. They'll give out antibiotics on this hand and on that hand they'll take the Vitamin D from you saying it's toxic so it's pretty crazy isn't it? So Vitamin D can cause constipation in some people if it's taken in excessive amounts. We're talking 40,000 international units. I've seen people take 5-600,000 international units a day. Don't laugh I've seen it happen. These were people that were very sick with cancer and they thought well I'll just really mega, mega boost on Vitamin D. A very silly thing to do. When you megadose on Vitamin D, it can cause hypercalcemia in the body so too much calcium buildup and that can affect your kidneys or your eyes or your heart or your brain. It can lead to a lot of different health problems. You can also get muscle problems. You can even get seizures from high dose Vitamin D. So you need to be cautious with Vitamin D that you don't go excessive. Here's what you do. Get a blood test done. Check your level of Vitamin D. You want to have it between 70 to 100 is a good reading for Vitamin D. Many people I see are 10, 20, 30 and the doctor says it's perfectly fine. When I started testing patients for Vitamin D 25 years ago, they weren't doing Vitamin D testing. They didn't even think it was relevant to test for Vitamin D back then. And even now they're reluctant to test for it. The day will come when a test for all minerals and vitamins in the body of every human being and medicine hopefully will working on the premise of building up the health with minerals and vitamins rather than poisoning it with Tylenol and Paxil and crap like that. So what's the solution? The solution is get your Vitamin D level tested particularly going into wintertime. Make sure that your levels are well over 50 hopefully 70. And if they're not that level, you want to start taking 5000 international units of Vitamin D3. Make sure you get the D3, the cholecalciferol, the D3. So you take one capsule of that per day with a main meal and after about I would say eight weeks, 12 weeks, get the level tested again. Make sure that your level is up around the 70 mark. That could potentially hold off a lot of chronic diseases. It's well worth doing. But yes it can cause constipation. If you take crazy amounts, anything can cause constipation.
