The Lost City of Atlantis - Hidden in Plain Sight - Advanced Ancient Human Civilization

20:58
Not only did the lost city of Atlantis actually exist, but its true location has been hiding in plain sight for thousands of years, completely unnoticed, as we’ve been looking in all the wrong places...Since everyone assumes that it must be under the ocean somewhere, such as in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea, which have long been considered to be the most likely places for its existence. And no, I am not about to suggest that Antarctica is the hidden location of Atlantis, either. Because in this video, I am going to connect the dots on the exact words that Plato used to describe Atlantis, its location, and the geographical land features that surround it, which were recorded in Plato’s dialogues, the Critias and Timaeus. And the details that Plato shared of Atlantis, which I’m about to share with you in side by side comparison, will show you that the Richat Structure located in Mauritania Africa, also commonly referred to as the Eye of the Sahara, or the Eye of Africa…is the most likely location for the lost city of Atlantis. Lessons from Easter Island | Carl Lipo | TEDxBermuda

21:51
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Anthropologist Dr. Carl Lipo says everything we thought about Easter Island’s famous collapsed civilisation is wrong. He suggests Bermuda can learn lessons from that catastrophe about long-term survival on our own isolated, water-parched island. I currently serve as an Associate Professor at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). I am part of the faculty of that forms the basis of a Program in Archaeology and a founding member of IIRMES, a multi-disciplinary institute for the study of materials, environments and society. At CSULB, I teach classes in Introductory Archaeology, World Prehistory, Eastern North American Prehistory, Artifact Analysis, GIS, Statistics, Method and Theory, Foundations of Anthropology Field Research Design, Geophysical Techniques, and the Scientific Study of Origins. My research focuses on the use of evolutionary theory to generate scientific explanations about human cultural change in the archaeological record. I see this focus as a critical challenge for the social sciences and that our ability to be able to due this task vital to our future. My perspective is fairly idiosyncratic to my background but lodged in the philosophy of science and evolutionary biology. You can view some of my recent work (here) to see a little into how I think about the world. My recent studies include the development of theoretical models and the construction of methods for studying patterns of change caused by cultural transmission and the process of natural selection in cultural systems. In addition, I have interests in remote sensing to efficiently and non-destructively study the record. This work includes the use of magnetometry, resistivity, conductivity, thermal imagery and ground penetrating radar. My field research has taken me from the Mississippi river valley to Easter Island to California and coastal Guatemala. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Dr. Anton Treuer (03-22-2012) "Historical Trauma"

01:30:52
Keynote speaker Dr. Anton Treuer closes out Inver Hills Community College's Student/Faculty Conference. This year's theme was Flourishing in a World of Disasters. In this talk Dr. Treuer discusses some of the disasters visited upon American Indians, as well as how the effects of those disasters continue to linger even today. What makes this talk so powerful is that it does not simply attempt to lay blame, rather, Dr. Treuer offers possible solutions for growth and the possibility of authentic global flourishing. (NOTE: the camera needed reset every 30 minutes, which is why there are three "two second" breaks. NO content was lost in those, and the battery died right as Dr. Treuer cited Chris Rock and how racist does one have to be to turn down a day off of work just because it celebrates a black person. The talk ended right after that, so nothing of import was lost.) Thank you to all that helped make this happen!

Biblical Series I: Introduction to the Idea of God

02:38:29
Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals. 10 Biggest Architectural Fails

07:20
You won't believe the architectural fails that we have on this list. From skyscrapers that melt cars and dangerous bridges breaking. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr # 6 Lotus Riverside Complex The Lotus Riverside was a residential apartment complex in Shanghai. It’s made up of eleven 13-story rectangular buildings. One fateful morning in June 2009, one of the buildings toppled completely over on its side. It fell straight over and just barely missed a nearby building. The way they are shaped and constructed, if it had hit, it would have created the world’s most destructive domino effect. The thing that caused this wasn’t an architectural glitch in the building but rather the foundation it was built on. Right below the building, workers were excavating earth to create an underground garage. The soil was dumped into a landfill near a creek which caused the water to seep into the ground. All of this combined turned the foundation beneath the complex to mud, leading to the collapse. # 5 Ray and Maria Stata Center The Ray and Maria Stata Center is an academic complex at MIT that was designed by Frank Gehry. It was opened in 2004 and received lots of positive attention for its unique and mind-bending angles and structural facades. However, the building has since been riddled with so many problems that MIT has sued Frank Gehry’s firm for it. The $300 million dollar building had drainage issues that caused cracks in walls, mold grew on the brick exterior, and huge dangerous icicle daggers hang from the roof. The repairs cost the school more than $1.5 million dollars. # 4 Tropicana Field Stadium The Tropicana Field is home to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Major League Baseball Team based in St Petersburg, Florida. The problem with the field isn’t the actual field, but what hangs above it. The ceiling has four catwalks and several lights hanging down that, as you can imagine, get in the way of baseballs that are hit into the air. In case you don’t know, a major facet of baseball is trying to hit the ball as high and as far as possible so you can potentially, hit a homerun. The structures at the stadium often get in the way of that and will even block potential home run balls. Sometimes a light will get hit and cause a dangerous rain of super hot glass to fall into the field. Maybe the next time you design a baseball stadium, consider not building a roof. # 3 Walkie Talkie Skyscrapers The Walkie Talkie Skyscraper in London was an architectural novel, acclaimed for its slightly concave facade and towering height. However, there was something else about it that became much more infamous: it’s a 525 feet tall heat ray. The concave shape of the building focuses and reflects sun rays in just a way that it magnifies them and burns everything on the street around it. The heat rays reflecting off the building have been found to fry doorways, shatter tiles, and heat the ground up to 243 degrees Fahrenheit. It even melted cars down to their body frames. # 2 Sampoong Department Store The Sampoong Department Store was initially meant to be a four-floor office building but was later converted into a department store. To do this, they, of course, removed support columns of elevators and relocated an air conditioning unit to the roof. Obviously, the result was not good. The structural instability caused the building to completely collapse in 1995, trapping 1500 people and killing 502. # 1 Skyscraper on Stilts When an architect named William LeMessurier wanted to build a skyscraper in the 1970s, his ideal construction site was occupied by a Lutheran church that was completely unwilling to move. So instead of demolishing the church, he decided to build the skyscraper in the air right above the church. The Citigroup Center tower is a 59 story building that has a foundation made of stilts, so the building is right above the church. However, as you might think, a skyscraper on stilts can have some pretty dangerous structural problems if you’re not careful. The whole building was made with bolted joints rather than welded joints, which made it super susceptible to being toppled by a strong enough storm. So did Citigroup warn everyone in the area that the biggest building on the block could come crashing down at any moment? No, they just secretly welded all the joints together and prayed to all their Gods that it wouldn’t come crashing down before then. If it had come down, it could have ended the lives of around 200,000 people.

Harpeth River Mound Bottom and May's Mace Bluff

03:51
Pictures of Harpeth River Mound Bottom and Mace Bluff are from an Oct. 24, 2009 hiking tour of the Big Harpeth River area in Kingston Springs, TN. The illustration using one of the mound photos is my personal interpretation of what the Mound Temple may have looked like. Mound photos are of the largest mound facing East, although there are 13 other smaller mounds in the area surrounded on 3 sides by the Harpeth River. The bluff viewed from the top of the mound is May's Mace Bluff where the Ceremonial Mace Petroglyph is located. Mound Bottom is located near Narrows of the Harpeth. Archaeologists estimate the occupation of the site to be between 900 AD and 1300 AD. Mound Bottom is a state owned archaeological area. For information about tours of this area contact Tennessee State Parks. Prompted by our guide Maury, we were respectfully quiet and aware as we ascended to the top of the large mound. Oddly the sun broke through the clouds for the first time that day as we stepped onto the top of the mound, as if welcoming us. Thank you for watching, and thank you Maury for the informative tour. Decolonizing Language Revitalization

01:56:24
September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. April Charlo from Bitterroot Salish people and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Montana. Khelsilem Rivers is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw language revitalization activist from Vancouver. Wahzhazhe: An Osage Ballet

01:03:00
The Osage ballet, Wahzhazhe, is a contemporary ballet that brings together unique and diverse qualities of Oklahoma history and culture: a reverence for classical ballet that was the legacy of two famous Osage ballerinas, Maria and Marjorie Tallchief, and the richness of Osage traditional music, dance, and textile arts. The creative set designs transform the stage into accurate depictions of Osage lifestyles and the costumes are created to appear as the traditional tribal clothing that was worn during the past 200 years. The ballet depicts the history of the Osage people: their removal from their homelands, the boarding-school era, the discovery of oil on their reservation, which lead to great wealth and tragedy, and the celebration of Osage life today. Wahzhazhe is produced by Randy Tinker Smith and choreographed by Jenna Smith, both of Osage descent. Roman Jasinski acted as adviser on the project. This performance was recorded on March 23, 2013 in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian.
