Lessons from Easter Island | Carl Lipo | TEDxBermuda

21:51
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Anthropologist Dr. Carl Lipo says everything we thought about Easter Island’s famous collapsed civilisation is wrong. He suggests Bermuda can learn lessons from that catastrophe about long-term survival on our own isolated, water-parched island. I currently serve as an Associate Professor at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). I am part of the faculty of that forms the basis of a Program in Archaeology and a founding member of IIRMES, a multi-disciplinary institute for the study of materials, environments and society. At CSULB, I teach classes in Introductory Archaeology, World Prehistory, Eastern North American Prehistory, Artifact Analysis, GIS, Statistics, Method and Theory, Foundations of Anthropology Field Research Design, Geophysical Techniques, and the Scientific Study of Origins. My research focuses on the use of evolutionary theory to generate scientific explanations about human cultural change in the archaeological record. I see this focus as a critical challenge for the social sciences and that our ability to be able to due this task vital to our future. My perspective is fairly idiosyncratic to my background but lodged in the philosophy of science and evolutionary biology. You can view some of my recent work (here) to see a little into how I think about the world. My recent studies include the development of theoretical models and the construction of methods for studying patterns of change caused by cultural transmission and the process of natural selection in cultural systems. In addition, I have interests in remote sensing to efficiently and non-destructively study the record. This work includes the use of magnetometry, resistivity, conductivity, thermal imagery and ground penetrating radar. My field research has taken me from the Mississippi river valley to Easter Island to California and coastal Guatemala. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

What Are The 7 Leave No Trace Principles?

20:20
What Are The 7 Leave No Trace Principles?- 1) Plan Ahead & Prepare Plan ahead for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies. Repackage food to minimize waste. 2) Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces Protect riparian areas by camping away from lakes and streams. In popular areas, concentrate use on existing trails and campsites. Walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when wet or muddy. Keep campfires small. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is absent. Avoid places where impacts are just beginning. 3) Dispose of Waste Properly Pack it in, pack it out- including food waste (always inspect your area before leaving). Deposit solid human waste in catholes dug 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 ft. from water, camp, and trails, (pack out toilet paper and hygiene products). To wash yourself or your dishes, carry water 200 ft. away from lake or stream. 4) Leave What You Find Preserve the past: examine, but do not touch historic structures and artifacts. Leave rocks, plants, and other natural objects as you find them. Do not build structures, furniture, or dig trenches. 5) Minimize Campfire Impact Use lightweight stove for cooking and enjoy a candle lantern for light. Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires (fires must always be 200 ft. from any body of water). Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand. Burn all wood/coals to ashes, put out fire completely, and then scatter cold ashes. 6) Respect Wildlife Observe wildlife from a distance. Never feed animals. Protect wildlife and your food by storing rations and trash securely. Control pets at all times, or leave them at home. 7) Be Considerate of Other Visitors Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail. Step to the downhill side of the trail when encountering pack stock. Let nature's sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises. In this episode, Pastor Carl unveils many disturbing ancient pagan practices and ceremonies being revived in our modern day cultures and governments. Prophecy is foretold in the Bible — and fulfilled in today’s news. But America is not mentioned in the Bible, so can there be any true connections between modern America, Israel, and the end times? In this series, you will learn how prophecy works, how modern America ties into ancient prophecy, why Israel is in the crosshairs, which countries to watch, and what’s about to happen next! Biblical Series I: Introduction to the Idea of God

02:38:29
Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals. His distinct and lively Haida Manga style engages perfectly with this inspirational story that encourages every individual to act on behalf of the worlds limited and precious resources. http://mny.ca/ Athlii Gwaii: The Line at Lyell (46:30 min.) 2003 Part of the Ravens and Eagles: Haida Art series Jeff Bear/Marianne Jones, Ravens and Eagles Productions In the fall of 1985, a small but resolute troupe of Haida elders journeyed by helicopter to Athlii Gwaii (Lyell Island) to join their young counterparts in a stand against clearcutting. Industrial invasion in the remote archipelago had gone too far. Ancient cedar giants and rare spruce trees—lifeblood of Haida art and culture—had been leveled indiscriminately for too long. Buoyed by their courageous Haida elders, protesters united in peaceful resistance. A total of 72 people were arrested, but their tactics garnered global attention and won change: in 1987, the government established the Gwaii Haanas Park Reserve/Haida Heritage Site. http://www.movingimages.ca/catalogue/Art/re_athliigwaii.html

Living in Two Worlds (Documentary)

26:07
WARNING: "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following program may contain images and voices of deceased persons". Living in Two Worlds is a 26 minute documentary made by Indigenous Media Scholarship students and a partnership between the OPEN CHANNEL, NITV, City of Port Phillip and St Kilda Youth Services. The film was produced by Open Channel students Lisa Maza, Aretha Briggs, Tim Church and Arthur Jackson working with industry mentors Alan Collins ACS, Rima Tamou and Peter Worland. Living in Two Worlds gives voice to the 'Parkies', a group of mostly indigenous people who congregate in the park. It also follows Dave Arden, a proud Kookatha/Gunditjmarra man and well renowned songwriter/musician, who also spent time in the park. They come together at Yalukit Wilam Ngargee Indigenous music festival, where the 'Parkies marshal, and Dave and his band play. These unique stories highlight family, culture, identity, connection and the resilience of people living in two worlds.

JSGS Public Lecture: Implementing the Duty to Consult

59:33
JSGS Public Lecture: Implementing the Duty to Consult: Explaining Similarities and Differences in Provincial Approaches to Aboriginal Consultation Presented by: Dr. Martin Papillon, Associate Professor, School of Political Studies, University of Ottawa Provincial governments in Canada have responded to recent Supreme Court decisions on the constitutional duty to consult Aboriginal peoples with a series of policies outlining their interpretation of this new norm and procedures to implement it. While these policies vary significantly, broadly reflecting the specific economic, political and legal context of Aboriginal-state relations in each province, recent developments suggest a convergence both in the definition and in the implementation of the duty to consult across Canada. This presentation discussed possible explanations for this convergence and its implications for Aboriginal-provincial relations and for policy-making in the Canadian federation more broadly.

They once again take to the air, hoping to clear the war camp and travel deeper into the territory of the Mind Flayers. Not quite fast enough, they are attacked mid flight and brought crashing to the ground, within a stone’s throw of the tunnel that will hopefully lead them to Lady Kima. With some quick spell work from Tiberius and Keylith, the group is able to flee further into the bowels of Khaloor and find shelter long enough to heal their wounds. Pressing forward, they quickly realize their path is growing more dangerous with every step into the darkness.
