ICONIC PINK RIBBON BAGEL RETURNS TO PANERA BREAD IN OCTOBER Proceeds During the Month of October to Support Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; 100 Percent of Proceeds to Benefit the Organization on Friday, October 5. ALLENDALE, NJ (September 17, 2018) – Panera Bread, makers of delicious bread items, soups, salads, sandwiches, pastas and more, today announced that its Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign will return to menus at participating bakery-café locations throughout Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island to raise awareness and funds for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Shaped in the form of the iconic pink ribbon and baked fresh each morning by Panera’s bakers, the cherry-vanilla bagel features cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar – a perfect mix of flavors for the fall season. Throughout the month-long campaign, Panera Bread will donate a portion of the proceeds from its Pink Ribbon Bagel to MSK. Additionally, on Friday, October 5, Panera Bread will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from sales of its Pink Ribbon Bagel to the cause. The world’s oldest and largest private cancer center, MSK is committed to providing exceptional patient care, leading-edge research, and renowned educational programs. “We are proud to bring back Panera Bread’s Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign this year,” said Greg George, vice-president of operations for quick casual and specialty concepts, Doherty Enterprises. “The fight against breast cancer continues to be an important cause and we are honored to support the hard work and dedication put forth by Memorial Sloan Kettering to help eliminate and treat those with the disease. We look forward to raising funds and awareness for another successful year and encourage our guests to enjoy this bakery favorite in October.” In an effort to build awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research, Panera Bread offers guests the opportunity to pre-order Pink Ribbon Bagels. This allows Panera Bread to fulfill the demand for Pink Ribbon Bagels while maximizing the amount raised for organizations like Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. "At MSK, our collaborative teams are discovering new, more effective ways to treat breast cancer,” says Neil Iyengar, MD, an MSK breast oncologist. “We’re very grateful to Panera Bread and its customers for supporting MSK—and for helping us save lives.” Owned and operated by Doherty Enterprises, Panera Bread locations on Long Island include: Bay Shore, Bellmore, Bohemia, Bridgehampton, Carle Place, East Meadow, East Northport, Farmingdale, Garden City, Glen Cove, Hauppauge, Hampton Bays, Hicksville, Huntington Station, Huntington Village, Island Park, Lake Grove, Lake Ronkonkoma, Lawrence, Little Neck, Massapequa, Mineola, New Hyde Park, North Babylon, Patchogue, Plainview, Port Jefferson, Riverhead, Rockville Centre, Syosset, Valley Stream and West Babylon. Hannah's Hugs: Blankets for Chemotherapy Patients

03:41
“It makes you feel good and it makes you feel that you’re not alone I guess and people care about you and what you’re going through.” Hannah Williston is explaining why she makes blankets for chemotherapy patients here at Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing. “The blanket is something that holds you, keeps you warm and safe and stuff when you know you don’t feel good or you think that something bad had just happened to you,” says Hannah. Hannah’s fleece hugs are very welcome in the Infusion Center where patients can spend hours at a time sitting as they receive treatment “They’re always chilly when they’re sitting back here, it doesn’t matter how warm the room is, they’re cold and so to have that blanket to cuddle up with just to see them being so comfortable it’s so nice and a lot of them will bring the blankets back for their chemo treatments, they can use them when they come back each time,” says Nikki Steele, RN. Hannah’s mother was her inspiration to begin making blankets for patients. She’d received treatment for breast cancer here in Red Wing about a half dozen years ago and now she works as a scheduler in the very same unit that helped save her life. As Monica Williston proudly shows off the blanket a neighbor gave her. She remembers just how comforting it was as she checks patients in for treatment. “Every time they come in I always ask them how they’re feeling, because I know they’re probably really having a crappy day and they’re going to get sick and this is just something that most people are perky about and they’re excited to have.” Patients have a cabinet full of options and patterns to choose from at the Infusion Center and usually there’s something that appeals to gals, or guys. “The patients are shocked, some can’t believe a college kid is making these and paying for the material, they love it, they think it’s very kind,” says Nikki. Belinda Peterson, a patient with breast cancer is among them. She was so impressed she wrote Hannah a thank you letter. “You just hear so many young people today don’t have a lot of goals and stuff and you just don’t hear of too many acts of kindness by young people,” said Peterson during a phone interview. “I just thought it was such a cool gift because not only was it practical but it also represented hope, a battle her mom had won and something I can win too.” “It was very heartwarming, I felt like I had done something really nice and I’m glad that I was able to do it,” says Hannah. The “tie-blankets” start out as a kit with two layers of fleece and then it’s time for several cuts. First Hannah cuts the squares out on the corners, then she cuts the fringes and double ties them. The whole process can take up to an hour per blanket. It’s a task that Hannah’s mom helps with occasionally as she studies for a degree in elementary education at the University of Minnesota Morris. “Hannah is wise beyond her years and we’re just lucky to have her do this for us, I don’t know how long she’ll be able to do it, it’s fabulous,” says Nikki. “It’s definitely been an experience and I definitely want to keep doing it, I think it’s been really fun,” said Hannah. But how long will she keep making them? “Until cancers cured,” she said.

On a bright and warm morning, several patients and designers from the MD Anderson Cancer Center Children's Art Project traveled to the Houston Garden Center where they painted two new spring-time designs. Complete with easels, plenty of colorful paint and inspiring surroundings, the children created a large red butterfly and a scene of beautiful tulips. For many of these patients, participation these activities means time away from the hospital and an opportunity to connect with their peers. With support from staff in the MD Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital, the kids are able to focus on one thing — having fun. http://bit.ly/jJwcBs Each of the day's painted designs are available in CAP's 2011 spring catalog, which contains a variety of new products featuring the children's artwork including phone covers, stationery, jewelry and more. Sale proceeds fund important patient-focused programs such as scholarships, summer camps and other programs that support and enhance the development of young cancer patients.

Living With Cancer in Central Illinois: Diagnoses & Decisions

27:46
As new bio-technology and research make more and more information available to patients with cancer, they and their families often confront new and challenging decisions. Some risk factors for cancer can be inherited. Many have been linked to gene mutations. In some cases, people choose not to know if they carry any of the genes. Others choose to learn they carry a marker for cancer and must make the difficult decision of how to respond. Some increase screening, others undergo preventive surgery while they're healthy. In "Living With Cancer In Central Illinois: Diagnoses & Decisions," We will hear from doctors, families and cancer survivors who've faced these decisions for their patients, themselves or their loved ones. Amanda Vinicky moderates a discussion with Rohit Bhargava, University of Illinois Professor of Bioengineering and Beckman Institute Faculty Member, Barbara Bello, RN, an oncology nurse with Presence Health, and Dr. Jo-mel Labayog, an Oncologist at Presence United Samaritans Cancer Center. "Living With Cancer in Central Illinois: Diagnoses & Decisions" premiered on WILL-TV on Thursday, April 2 at 9:00pm.

'Dear Abby' columnist Pauline Phillips dies at 94 | Dear Abby Passes Away

00:56
Pauline Phillips, the original "Dear Abby" advice columnist, died Wednesday at the age of 94 after a decade-long struggle with Alzheimer's disease, NBC News has confirmed. Phillips wrote the most widely syndicated column in the world — published in more than 1,200 newspapers and read by nearly 9 million people daily — under the pen name Abigail Van Buren for four decades. In 1956, the 37-year-old housewife became a journalist, writing for the San Francisco Chronicle and, soon after, for newspapers across the country. Phillips gave advice to men and women alike, championing equal rights for women, minorities, mentally ill individuals and those suffering from disease in her column and beyond. She continued giving advice through the publication of six books and a popular radio show, "The Dear Abby Show," which aired on the CBS Radio Network for 12 years. Her daughter, Jeanne Phillips, co-wrote the column with her mother for more than a decade. "I have lost my mother, my mentor and my best friend," Jeanne Phillips said in a statement. "My mother leaves very big high heels to fill with a legacy of compassion, commitment and positive social change. I will honor her memory every day by continuing this legacy." Jeanne Phillips continues to write the column today, carrying on her mother's legacy under the pen name Abigail Van Buren. Other popular advice columnists — like Slate's Dear Prudence and The Rumpus's Dear Sugar — have followed in the iconic journalist's footprints. Dr. Gilda Carle, TODAY.com's 30-Second Therapist, spoke of Pauline Phillips' impact on her own career. "I am indebted to her," Carle said. "I would never have been able to do what I do without first being shown the way by 'Dear Abby.'" Phillips continued writing her column even into her 70s, seeing hundreds of letters daily. "Age has nothing to do with it," she once said of her work. "It's only work if you would rather be doing something else." She was born on July 4, 1918, in Sioux City, Iowa. Her sister, Esther "Eppie" Pauline Friedman Lederer, also was a popular advice columnist — under the pen name Ann Landers. She died at age 83 of multiple myeloma. Phillips is survived by her husband of 73 years, Mort Phillips, her daughter, Jeanne, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Flowers are to be placed on Phillips's "Dear Abby" star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today at 4:30 p.m. ET.
