Local Honey & Allergies Myth | HealthiNation

Does eating local honey help prevent seasonal allergies? Knowledge is sweet. Related Videos: What are Food Allergies? | HealthiNation http://youtu.be/Yydbjsia2Yg Food Allergy Substitutes | HealthiNation http://youtu.be/nVPaa5zMC90 TRANSCRIPT: Wouldn't it be sweet if simply eating locally-produced honey could help prevent seasonal allergies? The thinking behind this is that bees make honey from pollen and it's pollen to which many people are allergic. So consuming honey ought to build up our tolerance to the allergen, kind of like allergy immunotherapy, right? Well, no. The reasoning falls apart because the kind of pollen in honey is different from the kind of pollen that people are generally allergic to. Bees collect a sticky, heavy pollen that is found in flowers. The kind of pollen that people are often allergic to is a light, fluffy kind produced by trees that blows in the wind. It's a myth that flowers are the worst offenders in terms of allergens. People generally don't react to insect-pollinated plants like flowers. They react most to wind-pollinated plants like trees and grass. That's the stuff we inhale that triggers our immune systems to overreact. And voila! Seasonal allergies in full bloom. [off camera sneeze or cough]. But a little honey could help with that congestion and scratchy throat....if you put it in some hot tea. Sources: 1. Is It A Cold or Is It An Allergy?. Honey for Allergies

07:20
http://www.hibiscusmooncrystals.com The scientific research pertaining to this...: "At least one informal (unfunded) study on allergies and honey conducted by students at Xavier University in New Orleans produced positive results. Researchers divided participants into three groups: seasonal allergy sufferers, year-round allergy sufferers and non-allergy sufferers. These groups were further divided into three subgroups with some people taking two teaspoons of local honey per day, others taking the same amount of non-local honey each day and the final subgroup not taking honey at all. The Xavier students found that after six weeks, allergy sufferers from both categories suffered fewer symptoms and that the group taking local honey reported the most improvement." 5 Home Remedies for Seasonal Allergies Beyond Local Honey

08:21
5 Home Remedies for Seasonal Allergies (Beyond Local Honey) Runny nose, itchy eyes, and the infuriating sensation of not being able to sneeze? Pollen count is on the rise as the weather warms up which means one thing-allergies. When it comes to home remedies for allergies you hear a lot about local raw honey preventing them. It is supposed to work because the gradual intake of local pollen will help build up your immunity before the symptoms start, thereby providing relief when the season actually hits. And while it does work for some people, let’s not forget that there are plenty of remedies you can try at home to help relieve the common symptoms of seasonal allergies. As a Minnesotan I intend to soak up every last bit of warm weather, especially after our brutal winter, and I’ll be utilizing a number of remedies to help fight any allergies dragging me down. 1. Nettle-Peppermint Tea Nettle has such a negative image, but it’s one of the most incredible herbs you will use once you add it to your repertoire. From relieving arthritis (link), lowering blood pressure, and (of course) helping seasonal allergies, it performs a wide variety of functions thanks to its (find property names.) The peppermint contains a type of flavonoid called luteolin-7-O-rutinoside which can help inhibit the activity and secretion of anti-inflammatory enzymes, such as histamines, and greatly reduce the dreadful discomfort that comes along them. You will need… -1 teaspoon of dried peppermint OR ¼ cup chopped fresh peppermint -1 teaspoon of dried nettle leaf OR ¼ cup chopped fresh nettle leaf -Honey and lemon to taste (optional) -8 ounces of fresh water Directions It doesn’t get much simpler than this recipe! Place the nettle and peppermint in a mug and cover with boiling water. Steep them for 10-15 minutes, strain; add honey to taste, and drink 2 times daily as needed for allergy relief. 2. Bee Pollen If local honey isn’t doing the trick for you, try bee pollen. The same concept lies behind how it works-starting in small amounts and gradually increasing the dosage daily will help build up your immunity to the pollen in your area. This is a play off what is known in medicine as “the hygiene hypothesis”, in which childhood exposure to germs and bacteria are vital to developing an immune system that can handle those same things down the line. Here you expose yourself to allergens before allergy season so your system doesn’t take a huge blow when the air fills with pollen. There are two vital parts to this remedy-first, make sure you are not anaphylactic or severely allergic to bees, or so allergic to pollen that you experience anaphylaxis. Second, get local pollen. This will not work unless the pollen is local, as you need to build up a tolerance to the plants in your area. You also need to make sure that your pollen is coming from a good source, and free from insecticides. There are 3 forms (granules, capsules, and powder) but I prefer granules. Bee pollen is crunchy, musty, and very floral-enjoy it plain or sprinkle some over yogurt or oatmeal in the morning! 3. Refreshing Citrus Drink Since many allergies peak in the spring and summer, they happen to coincide with warm, sunny days that you want to enjoy by frolicking in the great outdoors. As healing as tea is, sometimes you just need that tart, cool, refreshing drink at your side. This citrus filled drink contains plenty of vitamin C, which can provide relief from seasonal allergies, thanks to its incredible ability to nourish the immune system. Since the immune system is struggling to function right when you experience allergies, the benefits of this are obvious! 4. Red Onion Water Onions contain a water soluble chemical compound called quercetin, which has been demonstrated in preliminary studies to reduce the amount of histamine produced by the body, therefore reducing symptoms of allergies. It is, essentially, nature’s version of an anti-histamine. Quercetin itself has also been shown to inhibit inflammation, as well as act as a bronchodilator, opening up airways and helping you breathe easier. 5. Apple- Walnut Trail Mix This mix will help you hit the trail in no time, without the sneezing and itching. Walnuts are a daily snack that you can enjoy to help ease allergy symptoms. High in magnesium, they help tamp down any wheezing or coughing that’s taking place, while their vitamin E content can boost immunity and protects your body from reacting to allergens. Apples, like onions, contain quercetin, and naturally reduce the production of histamine. Several studies have confirmed that an apple a day really does keep allergies at bay.

Known for its distinct taste, turmeric provides numerous health benefits for individuals when consumed consistently. When mixed with honey, this paste helps boost immunity while promoting our overall health through their combined effects. In fact, when mixed together, it may actually increase honey’s bioavailability. Generally, when combining these two ingredients, try to use both organic turmeric and raw organic honey if you can. Lets discuss some of the amazing health benefits of consuming honey mixed with turmeric. 1. First, honey and turmeric provides a wide range of important vitamins, minerals and nutrients in only a small dosage. Turmeric is a great source of manganese, iron, vitamin B6, copper and fibre. Raw honey is also rich in vitamins and minerals, These include calcium, magnesium, thiamin riboflavin and potassium. 2. The combination of honey and turmeric also has tremendous antibacterial and anti-fungus properties. The mixture can be applied topically to combat unwanted fungus found on the body, such as toe and foot fungus. It has also been shown to help fight Candida. As well, you can also consume honey and turmeric to help combat different types of bacteria and is a known natural yet potent antibiotic. 3. This mixture is also great for the overall health and look of our skin. The combination of these two wonderful ingredients provides many anti-aging, antibacterial and antimicrobial compounds which all work together to improve the skin’s quality. Both products are found in many cosmetic products sold today. Again, when combined together, this mixture can be applied topically as a potent face mask to improve the skin. It can work to treat acne, brighten the skin and make it look more radiant and reduce the signs of wrinkles. It may even be able to treat burns. 4. Raw honey mixed with turmeric can also work to naturally treat coughs and other respiratory issues as some studies have shown. As well, Turmeric’s amazing antiviral and antibacterial properties can help to treat common cold and flu symptoms. As a natural decongestant, honey and turmeric can also help to alleviate symptoms of nasal congestion and improve conditions effecting the upper respiratory tract. 5. The combination also has amazing anti-inflammatory properties and is a rich source of antioxidants. Honey contains floral flavonoids, which have been shown to boost the body’s antioxidant levels. Turmeric also contains curcumin, which provides excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This can help reduce inflammation throughout the entire body and may also improve blood pressure and decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. As well, honey and turmeric can help to get rid of free radicals in the body which may cause oxidative stress and boost our immunity. 6. Lastly, honey mixed with turmeric may also be able to help improve cognitive function. As a potent anti-inflammatory, this mixture can help support overall brain health. Inflammation is thought to be one of the causes of certain types of neurodegenerative disorders, among other causes. The potent anti-inflammatory properties in both honey and turmeric can help to counter certain inflammatory responses causes by stress and our environment. As well, the curcumin found in turmeric has been shown to stimulate the production of DHA and ALA. These are omega-3 fatty acids which can help support nervous system function in the brain You don’t have to consume large amounts of honey and turmeric for this mixture to be effective, especially if yo are consuming it consistently. One common recipe combines 3.5 ounces of raw honey and a tablespoon of turmeric powder. You can even half this recipe when beginning to consume this mixture. Simply mix the two ingredients together and consume. Consult with your medical practitioner before consuming to make sure this mixture is right for you. Thank you for watching the video! Here Is What Happens If You Eat Honey And Cinnamon Daily

03:18
For more than twenty years, health experts have been thinking about the power of two of the oldest cooking ingredients. It turns out that not only do cinnamon and honey taste great together, mixing the two of them together is also a medicinal wonder. Cinnamon has been used by Chinese and Ayurvedic folk medicine for over 2,000 years, and honey also has a rich history. Cinnamon has been shown to be very helpful in treating digestive disorders, menstrual pain, and joint pain because it has a lot of cinnamaldehyde, the molecular compound that brings down swelling, and gives cinnamon its taste and smell. Honey is also known for bringing down swelling, and is full of nutrients like amino acids, vitamins C and B6, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, and zinc. The reason these two foods are so great for the body is mainly because they can control swelling, fight free radicals, and boost the immune system. Here are the top uses for honey and cinnamon. 1. Arthritis In the ancient world, Ayurvedic doctors used a paste made from honey and cinnamon to treat arthritis. Today, we understand that this works because of cinnamaldehyde in cinnamon and ingredients like potassium in honey, which come together to treat the swelling and things the body’s missing that cause arthritis. Mix two tablespoons of raw honey with one tablespoon of powdered cinnamon. Put this on the hurt area, and rub it into your skin. You can also mix honey and cinnamon into a cup of warm water and drink it all the time to treat arthritis. 2. Allergies A honey and cinnamon mixture can help those with allergies that are not life- threatening. Both honey and cinnamon boost the immune system and guard it from bacteria and viruses. Honey and cinnamon also soothe pain from swelling and congestion that can come from certain allergies. For this help, you should drink a mixture of honey, cinnamon, and warm water all the time. 3. Cardiovascular Disease Some nursing homes in North America have tested using cinnamon and honey to help block heart disease. They agree that the mixture helps the flexibility and strength of arteries. Eating cinnamon and honey all the time, when put together with a healthy diet and normal activity level, can stop heart disease by clearing blocked arteries. 4. Diabetes Studies have shown that both cinnamon and honey lower blood sugar levels. Honey also lowers the level of bad LDL cholesterol and raises good HDL cholesterol. This is great because diabetics are usually at a higher risk of cholesterol problems. 5. The Common Cold In one study, they found that cinnamon lessens the growth of different bacteria that cause the common cold. When you mix this with honey, which boosts the immune system, it is great for stopping colds. So, when cinnamon is mixed with raw honey, many people never get sick at all. Or, if they get sick with the common cold, they get better very quickly! Allergy HELP through Raw Honey

02:57
Eating raw honey has many health benefits. For those of you suffering from seasonal allergies a daily dosage may help to build your immune system up against the local pollens. It works in a similar way to sublingual drops or allergy shots. If you have severe allergies, I recommend starting with a low dosage and working under the guidance of your doctor. Local Raw Honey can be found throughout the region from many fabulous beekeepers. The one's featured here are: Jack's Beelicious Honey at Central New York's Regional Market Thursdays and Saturdays. This is Clover honey. Through me, through my friend Kristen's Uncle Joe. I can bring it into the studio upon request. This is Goldenrod Honey. More raw honey info to come...

Allergic to bees... and I'm a beekeeper

05:56
This is the story of my bee venom allergy and my experience getting allergy shots. I have an allergy to honey bee venom and some other vespid venom from things like yellow jackets and hornets. I have been keeping bees for over ten years and continue to do so now even after some moderate-severe allergic reactions about three years ago. Venom immunotherapy (allergy shots) is a safe and effective treatment for most individuals with allergies to insect stings. If you have any questions regarding this process feel free to leave them in the comment section below. You can also subscribe to my channel if you are interested in seeing more. Many thanks to Allergy Associates of New Hampshire for allowing me to record the video of my venom injections during one of my office visits.

If your new or even old to beekeeping please watch and share. It may save a family member or friend. I make how to videos but this is the first one that might actually save a life. Its to do with a honey bee allergy and if you suddenly develop one. PS it happens REALLY fast. I got caught off guard by this allergy because I didn't know what to watch for, the fact it happened on my 4th year of beekeeping and there was no gradual build up, just OFF/ON.
