Children: Antibiotic Resistance

03:53
Medications come in two main forms - pills and liquids. Always read and follow the directions for the type of medication you are giving. This is especially important for liquid medicines. Many children's medicines come in liquid form because they are easier to swallow than pills. But they must be used correctly. Too often parents misread the directions, giving children several times the recommended dosage. This can be very dangerous, especially if given over a period of several days.

How to Fix Ingrown Toenails At Home

05:25
Have you ever suffered from an ingrown toenail? Then you know how painful it can be when the side of a toenail grows into the soft skin nearby. Though it usually happens to the toenails, a fingernail can actually become ingrown too. How does this happen? And what are some ways to take care on an ingrown toenail? An ingrown toenail can be caused by shoes that are too tight, nails not being cut right, a nail injury, or having uncommonly curved toenails. Also, people who have diabetes, or other health problems that stop the blood from flowing to the feet properly, are more likely to get ingrown toenails. Some signs of an ingrown toenail are pain that doesn’t stop, redness, and swelling. If not treated right away, onychocryptosis, or ingrown toenail, can lead to infection. This will be seen by redness and swelling around the nail, and pus and watery discharge which is colored with blood. There are ways to treat an ingrown toenail at home. However, if you already see signs of infection, go to a doctor, because an infection can spread and lead to problems. Warm Water Soak If you’re looking to lessen the pain, swelling, and tenderness brought on by an ingrown toenail, try soaking your foot in warm water a few times a day. - Fill a foot tub with warm water. - Soak your feet for 15- 20 minutes - Do this three to four times a day to help pain. Cotton Wedge Under the Nail After you soak your foot in the warm water, you can try putting a cotton wedge under your nail to make sure it grows above the skin. This will help the pain and let it heal faster. - Soak your feet in warm water and dry them very well. - Lift the nail carefully with a pair of tweezers that is not too sharp. - Put a small rolled up piece of cotton between the nail and skin. - To stop infection, use a new piece of cotton each time you soak your feet. Note: you may feel some pain in the beginning, but it will get better quickly. Make sure not to push the cotton roll more than the swollen skin lets. Epsom Salt Another good cure for an ingrown toenail is Epsom salt, or magnesium sulphate. It will help make the skin soft, so that it will be easier to bring out the ingrown toenail, and will bring down the swelling. - Fill a foot tub with warm water and put in one tablespoon of Epsom salt. - Soak your feet in the mixture for twenty minutes. - Take your feet out and dry them well. - Do this three to four times a week. Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar is a good cure for ingrown toenail because it kills bacteria and brings down swelling. Also, because of the little amount of acid in the vinegar, it helps stop infection. Here are two different ways to use apple cider vinegar to cure ingrown toenail. Use either one until you feel they have worked. - In a small foot tub, mix the same amount of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and warm water. Soak your toenail in the mixture for - Another way to do it is to soak only a cotton ball in raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and then put it on your toe. Leave it covered with a bandage for a few hours before taking it off. Hydrogen Peroxide Because hydrogen peroxide kills bacteria, it lessens the risk of an ingrown toenail getting infected. It also helps lessen the pain and swelling that come from an ingrown toenail. - Mix about ½ a cup of hydrogen peroxide in a small tub filled with warm water. - Let your foot soak in the mixture for twenty minutes. - Do this one to two times a day. Another thing to be careful of, is shoes. If your shoes are too tight, they can push the nail into the nearby skin. It’s better to wear shoes made of softer fabrics with more room for your toes. Women should try not to wear high heels, to keep pressure off the toes. Testing an Antibiotic Using a Disk Diffusion Assay - Kirby Bauer Method

04:38
At GoldBio, we make sure each of our products are thoroughly tested to the highest standards. In addition to a typical certificate of analysis (COA), we also test our antibiotics through a modified version of the Kirby-Bauer method, also known as the disk diffusion method. The test compares the antibiotic's ability to prevent bacterial growth to a common set of standards created by the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) in order to assure its functionality at a certain concentration. As a control, we use a strain sensitive to the antibiotic to determine its effectiveness and a resistant strain to assure it is the correct substance. Each lot is tested with this procedure. Visit the website at: http://www.goldbio.com/GoldBio-Video-Library/2/testing-antibiotic-using-disk-diffusion-assay-kirby-bauer-method **Update November 2014** Rather than going through the steps addressed in the video, this blog will just highlight important things to consider so you’re prepared to test when the time comes - https://www.goldbio.com/blog/120/old-antibiotics-wont-spoil-research-with-this-test **Update August 2017** Here is the equipment used in this video: -6 mm filter paper discs -sterile petri dishes -agar plates with no antibiotic -sensitive and resistant bacterial cultures -antibiotic to test and antibiotic for control Other items out on the bench is a Bunsen burner, lighter, tube racks, thermometer, pipette, pipette tips, antibiotics solution, forceps, ethanol, flow hood (optional) and a marker to label discs

Ferrofluid - The Magnetic Liquid!

03:11
Materials scientist and Christmas Lecturer Mark Miodownik demonstrates some of the weird properties of ferrofluid. This liquid is literally 'dripping with magnetism', containing a suspension of ferromagnetic nanoparticles that make the liquid responsive to external magnetic fields, generating unusual patterns, shapes and motion. Using a strong neodymium magnet and a large steel bolt, Mark demonstrates the strange and beautiful patterns the fluid forms in response to the magnetic field. Ferrofluids do not tend to maintain their behaviour in the absence of an external magnetic field and are therefore known as superparamagnets. Professor Eva Sapi, chairwoman of the Department and her students tested the whole-leaf stevia extract liquid to treat Borrelia burgdorferi — the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Stevia, a common coffee sweetener, is usually consumed in a powdered form. Borrelia forms a biofilm, or slime in the body. That biofilm allows it to hide out from antibiotics, making it very difficult to kill. This alternative form for Borrelia was shown not just in test tubes, but in human infected skin by the University of New Haven research group....... Helpful Tips for Giving Baby Medicine -- The Bump

00:58
Click here for the 411 on baby symptoms and conditions http://pregnant.thebump.com/new-mom-new-dad/baby-symptoms-conditions.aspx Some babies love medicine, but there are always those who absolutely refuse to take it. These tricks and tips from TheBump.com will help you give baby medicine with ease. If your child doesn't like to take liquid medications, consider trying a melt-away strip that dissolves on the tongue. If the medication is only available in liquid form, you can give it to them using a dosing syringe. By gently squeezing the medicine into your child's mouth, it makes it more difficult for them to spit it out. For those children who completely refuse to take their medicine, acetaminophen (or Tylenol) is available as a rectal suppository. Keep track of baby's acetaminophen dosage with this easy chart! http://pregnant.thebump.com/new-mom-new-dad/parenting-tools/articles/tool-acetaminophen-chart.aspx Connect with other moms and moms-to-be and share stories about pregnancy, giving birth, trying to conceive and more here http://pregnant.thebump.com/pregnancy-baby-message-boards.aspx For more pregnancy information, baby advice and parenting tips visit http://www.thebump.com/

Canker Sores: What REALLY Causes Them & How To Stop Them

09:28
Do you get canker sores or mouth ulcers? To find out more about what causes canker sores and a new supplement that helps prevent them, go to http://www.cankerboy.com Enter "FREETRIAL" in the coupon field to get the first 2 months for free (minus $5 for shipping)! UPDATE: Here's a few testimonials from people who have tried the Canker Sore Solution: "It has helped so much, I wish others knew more about it. I've had very few sores, and they were gone within a day, two at the most. That's amazing to me when they normally would last 10-20 days and be very large and painful." - C.B. Shumaker “I have to say it seems to really be working now that I’ve been on it almost 60 days. Haven’t had one since the first two weeks.” - R. Rouse “Since I’ve been taking Cankerboy, I’ve not only had fewer canker sores, but the ones that do appear go away in a day or two and never become painful.” - J. Stovall In this video, I break down everything you could ever need to know about canker sores and explain exactly what causes them according to the latest research - and it's not what you think. Despite decades of misinformation and confusion, canker sores are very different from cold sores and fever blisters, which are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Canker sores are a different thing altogether and present differently as well. Canker sores are actually caused by a glitch in the immune system, causing your immune system cells to overproduce a type of protein called tumor necrosis factor alpha, which triggers apoptosis (programmed cell death) of damaged cells near the location of a trauma. Luckily, there is a way to beat recurring canker sores, by regulating the body's production of TNF-a. And in this video, I announce a supplement I've created that does exactly that. Taken every day, this supplement will greatly reduce or eliminate canker sores in 6-8 weeks. You can find it at http://www.cankerboy.com Links to sources in this video: http://www.orthonj.com/FAQs/RASJADA303.pdf http://aabgu.org/relief-for-canker-sores/ Follow Cankerboy! https://www.facebook.com/cankerboy http://www.twitter.com/cankerboy Follow Joe! http://www.twitter.com/joescottwriter http://www.facebook.com/scottcreative http://everythingjoescott.tumblr.com/

How to Treat Fluid in the Ear | Ear Problems

01:11
Watch more How to Deal with Ear Problems videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508256-How-to-Treat-Fluid-in-the-Ear-Ear-Problems Fluid in the middle ear is referred to in the medical literature as serous otitis media. And serous otitis media occurs in the middle ear for several different reasons. The most common reason is as a result of a middle ear infection. Oftentimes when the acute infection which is causing pain or discomfort, is resolved, there will be leftover fluid that doesn't drain from your middle ear. And it doesn't drain because your eustachian tube is swollen closed. This is usually treated with various anti-inflammatory drugs. But on occasion those drugs are not effective and the fluid must be surgically drained. This fluid is drained by making a small hole in the eardrum, which is called a myringotomy. This is a procedure that can be done on an adult in the office painlessly with a topical anesthetic. Young children, however, who will not hold still in the office, often need to be sedated in the operating room with a light general anesthetic.

For more info: https://draxe.com/turmeric-benefits/?utm_campaign=Youtube-Jun-2015&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube&utm_term=turmeric In today’s video I want to share with you the incredible benefits of turmeric. There are over 6000 clinical studies proving turmeric to be the #1 healing herb today. The reason turmeric is so beneficial is because it contains an active compound called curcumin that is highly anti-inflammatory. Some of the main benefits include: 1. Anti-inflammatory which helps relieve pain 2. Helps balance blood sugar levels 3. Anti-microbrial properties 4. Supports detoxification 5. Cleans out your arteries A few ways to get more turmeric into your diet is by adding a tablespoon of turmeric to a glass of coconut milk as an herbal tea. You can find the recipe here: http://draxe.com/recipe/turmeric-tea-recipe/ Another way you can consume turmeric is by adding it to chicken breading, adding it to burger meat, salad, hummus, or simply in a capsule form. *This content is strictly the opinion of Dr. Josh Axe, and is for informational and educational purposes only. Iodine dosages

04:24
Dr. Mark Sircus explains the differences in dosing with Nascent and Lugol's iodine in adults and children and iodine's use in bringing up deficient levels as well as in treating infections, cancers and other ilnesses. http://drsircus.com/medicine/iodine/iodine-dosages ***Transcription*** The dosages depend on how you use it and the substance type – there is Lugol which has been around for 150 years, which is now in a lower concentration in United States because of certain laws that were passed, but you can get 2% Iodine, Lugol´s Iodine you can get 7% and you can even get as high as 15%. Whenever you use Iodine, no matter what Iodine you use – transdermally, painting in the skin – you have to be a little sensitive that sometimes it can burn the skin. Most often it does not, but you have to watch for skin reactions, drying out of the skin. I recommend for women with breast cancer to paint their breasts with Iodine. Oral dosages vary depending on where you live, your age, your size. Today in the northern hemisphere we do have a problem with radioactive iodine, if your thyroid is empty, running deficient on Iodine it will be a sponge for the radioactive type so it is really important today to supplement with Iodine, it is essential. If you live in the interior, away from the sea, also is very important, you have less iodine, exposed to less iodine in the environment. With the Nascent Iodine I recommend, which is in the atomic form, which is the form that the thyroid needs to create the thyroid hormones, it does not have to break down the molecular iodine which is Lugols or the pill forms, solid forms of Iodine. With the Nascent Iodine, in the bottle it says 3 drops to 5 drops, I believe 3 times a day. For my 3 years old I have given up to 15 to 20 drops at a time. You can take Iodine, start out with, if it is a child with an infection, instead of antibiotics, the Iodine is always going to be safer than an antibiotic. Iodine will not destroy and kill the healthy bacteria in the intestines. The only reaction normally is a detoxification, if a person is very, very toxic and very, very deficient. So with children and basically for basic supplementation and a minimal level in the northern hemisphere today I probably would be talking about 30 drops a day of the Nascent. Depending on the Lugol, maybe the same. Some Lugols, depending on the concentration, you will be taking less Lugol than Nascent. In treatment of cancer, patients usually go for 25mg up to 50mg and as high as a 100mg a day. This is what these Iodine doctors are suggesting. A hundred years ago the doctors used to go even higher, much higher, actually. So we are still in a very comfortable range. With children I would not hesitate when a child has a high fever and has an infection to do 10 or 15 drops of Nascent Iodine every 2 or 3 hours. The more you break up the dosage the more you can actually take orally in a very comfortable way for the body. In the cancer protocol we are talking about dosing with all the different items every 2 or 3 hours.

Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Sinusitis, also known as sinus infection or rhinosinusitis, is a very common condition where the paranasal sinuses are inflamed, causing congested nose, headache and facial pain. Paranasal sinuses are air cavities in the bones of the skull. There are four pairs of sinuses located on either side of the head. They are the maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses. The sinuses are lined with respiratory epithelium producing mucus. The mucus drains into the nasal cavity through small openings. Impaired sinus drainage has been associated with inflammation of sinuses. When a sinus is blocked, fluid builds up, making it a favorable environment for bacteria or viruses grow and cause infection. A typical sinusitis symptom is described as a dull pain or constant pressure commonly localized to the affected sinus. The pain may worsen when the person bends over or while lying down. Symptoms often start on one side of the head and spread to the other side. Acute sinusitis may be also be accompanied by thick nasal discharge of yellow greenish color. Sinusitis can be caused by: - Allergy(allergic rhinitis): allergens such as pollen, pet dander… may trigger inflammatory response of the mucosa of the nose and sinuses, resulting in excess mucus production, nasal congestion, sneezing and itching. - Infection: infection usually occurs as a complication of a common cold. Impaired sinus drainage due to inflammation of nasal mucosa during a cold often leads to infection of the sinus itself. Cold-like symptoms plus headache, facial pain or pressure are common complaints. - Other conditions that cause blockage of sinus drainage. These include: structural abnormalities such as deviated nasal septum; formation of nasal polyps. Treatments vary depending on the cause of sinusitis: - For allergy: intranasal corticosteroids are commonly used. - For viral infection: symptom relief medications such as nasal spray for irrigation and decongestion; other conservative treatment for common cold such as rest and drinking plenty of fluid. - For bacterial infection: antibiotics may be prescribed. - For recurrent or chronic sinusitis due to structural abnormalities or nasal polyps, nasal surgery may be recommended to clear up the drainage canal.

How to give liquid medication to cat? Giving Mythos Clavamox drops (Antibiotic for Gingivitis)

00:38
Mythos was put under anesthesia to clean his teeth few weeks ago at the animal hospital, vet had to take one of his decayed tooth out. After 2 weeks of recovery, we found that Mythos still got very bad breath. Our vet Dr. DeRose said it was probably caused by Gingivitis, he prescribed some Clavamox drops for him. For 2 times a day lasting 2-3 weeks, here is how I did it, not difficult! Way easier than giving pills. Now, most of the bad breath and red gums are gone! I guess Clavamox works, but not sure if Gingivitis will come back or not.

Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an infection in any part of the urinary system — the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. An infection of the urethra, or urethritis, may cause burning sensation when urinating and cloudy discharge. A bladder infection, or cystitis, may result in pelvic pain, frequent, painful urination, and blood in urine. A kidney infection, or acute pyelonephritis, may cause back pain (possibly only on one side), high fever, chills and nausea. UTIs typically occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and multiply in the bladder. Most commonly, these bacteria come from the digestive tract through fecal matter. UTIs are more common in women because of their anatomy. Specifically, the short distance from the A to the opening of the urethra and bladder makes it easier for the bacteria from the digestive tract to reach the urinary system. This is why the most common UTIs occur mainly in women and affect the bladder and urethra. Other bacteria may be brought over with S contact. Women who use certain types of birth control such as diaphragms or spermicidal agents are more at risk. Hormonal deficiency during menopause also makes women more vulnerable to infection. Infection limited to the bladder can be easily treated with antibiotics. However, if left untreated, a lower urinary tract infection may spread up to the kidneys where it becomes more dangerous. A kidney infection may result in permanent kidney damage. In rare cases, an infection may also spread to the bloodstream and can be life threatening. Urinary tract infections can be prevented following these steps: - Drink plenty of fluids – to flush out bacteria more frequently. - Wipe from front to back after a bowel movement - this helps prevent bacteria in stools from spreading to the urethra. - Empty the bladder soon after I to flush bacteria. - Avoid feminine products such as douches and powders, which could irritate the urethra. - Avoid diaphragms and spermicides as birth control methods

How to give a dog a pill (EASY)

00:25
We had a heck of a time giving our dog a pill. I even returned to the vet and the technician could not get a pill down him. I ended up having to puchase ANOTHER prescription that was a liquid form (and naturally, more expensive) in order to get his medication in him. Fast forward a year and we were faced with givng him a round of antibiotics. Cheese in a can is our go-to high-reward treat. I would shove the pill in his throat and then follow it up with the cheese. But this was still stressfull. Then I finally made life much easier on both of us with this technique. True, this is a small pill. I would still try this if we had to give him a larger pill. - You may want to start by just putting cheese on your finger and giving it to your dog to get him used to it - Put cheese on your finger to act as glue to hold the pill - Top with the pill - Add more cheese to cover the pill - Feed to your dog - Chase it right away with more cheese (either straight from the can or from your finger) to keep him swallowing - Voila! Of course, make sure your dog is not lactose intolerant if you want to go the cheese route. You can also use the Kong peanut butter in a can. Good luck!

What are the Benefits of Colostrum? Natural Immune Factors & Growth Factors by Thomas DeLauer

08:12
https://www.antlerfarms.com/new-zealand-colostrum.htm Many scientists believe that colostrum is the most powerful preventative food substance that we can consume. Colostrum contains a high concentration of biologically active substances including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids. However, of all the known components in colostrum, the most beneficial components are its immune factors and growth factors. Immune factors strengthen the body’s immune system to fight disease, while growth factors promote cell growth, development and repair. ----- Hey if it's good enough for baby it's probably good enough for you I'm Thomas DeLauer on behalf of Antler Farms, and today I want to give you the 411 on colostrum. So, colostrum is technically the form of milk that is produced right after a baby is born, but in reality it's not even really a milk, it's more of kind of a clearish yellow liquid that again is produced right after a baby is born. So, the whole purpose of colostrum is to deliver a quick shot of immune support to an infant. What we found over the last couple of decades is that colostrum is not so much nutritional as it is truly just a powerhouse of immune support and also specific nutrients that are needed to allow tissues to grow. The main goal of colostrum is to reinforce an infant's immune system. Additionally there's also these tissue and growth factors that are included in colostrum that help an infant grow to be big and strong. Now when it comes down to today's utilization of colostrum for an adult population most of it is derived from bovine colostrum. If you're working out or you're just trying to adopt a healthy lifestyle you do need the immune support, because it's going to help you recover quite a bit better. 70% of the cells that comprise our immune system are located in the gut. It is the main pathway for external matter to enter the body. This matter can be useful substances such as food and water, or damaging substances such as bacteria, viruses and toxins. Most pathogens that invade our bodies do so through the mucosal lining in our gut. So having a healthy gut is the strongest and most practical defense against disease. The regular use of colostrum keeps active antibodies in our gut which consistently combat pathogens that we ingest. Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is derived from grass fed cows. Because pasture feeding is highly beneficial to the cow’s health, it follows that it greatly increases the quality of the colostrum they produce. Studies confirm that the nutrients in dairy products from grass fed cows are substantially greater than that of grain fed cows. Additionally, because our cows are exposed to the outdoors without the use of antibiotics, they build a vigorous immune system. The foundation of this immune system is in its varied antibodies, which are then passed along through its colostrum. Ideally, colostrum should be sourced from a large herd (100+) of pasture raised cows and pooled together to increase the diversity of antibodies, thereby increasing its ability to resist disease. This is exactly how Antler Farms® New Zealand Colostrum is made. Visit https://www.antlerfarms.com
