Latest Perspectives on Animal Hoarding: New Understanding and Approaches

57:14
Randall Lockwood, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Forensic Sciences and Anti-Cruelty Projects, ASPCA Animal hoarding has received renewed attention from animal care and control and mental health professionals, including the recent classification of ‘hoarding disorder’ as a distinct mental illness by the American Psychiatric Association. This workshop will review the underlying dynamics of animal hoarding and the special challenges to veterinarians of responding to and documenting hoarding cases, the pros and cons of prosecuting hoarding as animal cruelty, and recent trends in establishing community-based responses and interventions. This presentation was recorded at the 2017 ASPCA-Cornell Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Conference.
Animal Hoarding A Mental Disorder All Its Own?

00:39
For millions of people, the compulsion to hoard things is a debilitating disorder. When those “things” are animals, the results can be tragic. A new study suggests that the motivations and complexities behind animal hoarding are different enough from other kinds of hoarding. It proposes that animal hoarding ought to be classified as a wholly different type of mental disorder. The condition exists when people compulsively collect stray cats, dogs, or other small creatures. They often fail to care for them properly. They think they are similar missionaries, saving [animals’] lives. Often they think they are the only ones who can care for them. Not all researchers are convinced. http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/09/animal-hoarding-its-own-mental-disorder-study-argues http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Psychologists Argue That Animal Hoarding Should Be A Separate Mental Disorder

03:08
Obsessively hoarding objects is thought to affect around 1.5 percent of people, but when the behavior extends to collecting animals, the results can be devastating. Scientists are now arguing that the motivations and complexities behind the condition are different enough from those of general hoarding for it to be classed as a separate mental disorder. For a long time, hoarding has been considered a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). People with OCD compulsively save objects that many would consider junk. But in 2013, the industry standard text on mental health – the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) – updated its entry for OCD, listing hoarding as its own entity. This was based partly on the fact that even though those with OCD are obsessively preoccupied with objects, people who hoard things tend to forget about them. This division is also supported by the fact that the drugs used to treat OCD generally don’t work on hoarders. Animal hoarding is listed as a subtype under hoarding in the DSM. Now, researchers are arguing that it should be elevated to a separate listing, publishing their findings in Psychiatry Research. The team interviewed 33 animal hoarders living in Porto Alegre in Brazil. On average, each person had 41 animals. Most of these were dogs or cats, although some people took to collecting ducks. The researchers found that in line with object hoarding, the average age of those affected was 60, around 90 percent were unmarried, and 76 percent had low-incomes. But they also found some significant differences. Despite there tending to be a 50/50 split between men and women among normal hoarders, the researchers found that 73 percent of the people they interviewed were women. They also found that most people started collecting animals after a major traumatic life event – not usually the case with typical hoarders. The psychologists argue that there are enough differences between general and animal hoarding for the two conditions to be divided. Yet it might take some time for this view to be accepted by the wider community. “I think the arguments are interesting, but I don’t think they justify considering it distinct just yet,” clinical psychologist Graham Thew told Science Mag. Nevertheless, the researchers suggest that the motivations behind the disorders are sufficiently different, especially as animal hoarders think that they are saving the animals they collect. As is often the case, more research is needed to assess whether the differences between the conditions are robust enough. [H/T: Science Mag]

How to Know If You Have a Hoarding Disorder

01:42
Watch more Addiction & Substance Abuse videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/406942-How-to-Know-If-You-Have-a-Hoarding-Disorder Step 1: Look at your free space Look around your home to see how much space can be called "cluttered". If the answer is "most," it may be a symptom of a hoarding disorder. Tip If you can no longer use your kitchen, dining area, and other living spaces because of all of the stuff, you may have a hoarding problem. Step 2: Rule out collections Rule out the possibility that you are just a collector if your keepsakes are strewn about. Collectors typically keep their items well organized and proudly displayed. Tip If a you have a collection that's out of control, keep only your favorites and those with a high market value. Step 3: Tap into feelings Ask yourself how your excess belongings make you feel. Hoarders are often embarrassed by the mess, but they can't seem to do anything about it because they have deep emotional attachments to their things. Step 4: How hard to discard Consider whether you have a hard time discarding or giving away items that have very little use or value for you in the present or near future. Step 5: Consider relationships Ask yourself whether your clutter has caused rifts in your personal relationships, or has gotten you into trouble with neighbors and city officials. Step 6: Get help Seek help from a professional if you have the symptoms of a hoarding disorder. It may be the first small step in getting your life cleaned up. Did You Know? A South Carolina woman was convicted of animal cruelty after hoarding 300 dogs.

Experts look into what causes animal hoarding

01:44
we look into what could be causing the recent string of animal hoarding cases around albuquerque.. an expert with a crisis outreach unit with a-p-d unit weighs in... the recent string of animal hoarding cases in albuquerque has raised a lot of questions about how these situations begin. joe bartels spoke with an expert who consults a-p-d on these types of cases ... and he's here with what we found out. what causes people to begin hoarding things like animals is still a mystery. experts believe the condition can be triggered by a varty of different chemical and emotional imbalances in the brain. dr. nils rosenbaum works with a-p-d's crisis outreach and support team with these types of cases. he says the root cause of hoarding can be complicated. "it often goes with other illnesses so it would be very very unusual to be an isolated problem. people often times have dementia, ocd, depression." last weekend animal welfare workers hauled out 53 cats from the home of lynn millitch. more than forty of them had to be put down. millitch is facing more than 100 charges related to her animal hoarding. then just yesterday animal welfare took 10 cats from a home on gold near pine....and its working to remove even more. the people who do end up hoarding animals do not feel like they're hoarding animals. i can't speak for all causes, but in general, they don't feel like they're harming the animals and that's part of the major problem." dr. rosenbaum says animal hoarders typically collect animals slowly-- over a period of years. as time goes on, the problem gets out of hand. experts say it's usually up to a neighbor or family member to step in and get them help. "it's rare that the person themselves would say, i'm over my head. i have too many animals." dr. rosenbaum says treatment is a difficult and lengthy process. doctors have to treat the combination of factors and some times it's not successful

Schenectady County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) - Animal Hoarding

02:41
The Schenectady County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has a somewhat controversial position on animal hoarding. While it qualifies as criminal behavior, there is overwhelming evidence that even criminally prosecuted hoarders whose animals are removed are more than likely to reoffend. Further, while animal abuse may be present, intent is usually not, and we are not interested in criminalizing mental illness and perpetuating the isolation and stigmatization of those individuals who are struggling with this issue. There is not a lot of great research about hoarding. It is considered to be a symptom of mental illness but not exclusively associated with one specific diagnosis. Hoarding has been linked to dementia, psychosis (schizophrenia) and OCD. (The SPCA is making an effort towards an interdisciplinary task force that includes public health and mental health professionals, and resources that can be made available to these encountered individuals and/or the individuals' families.) Family members tend to avoid asking for help because they don't want their loved one to end up on the six-o'clock news. We aim to create a comprehensive and humane option for members of our community who are struggling with this issue. (Avenues to explore will include potential for compensation, as well as potential for utilizing collective resources to make recommendations in criminal proceedings (mandatory mental health counseling).)

Animal Hoarders and House Cleaners

Animal hoarders are people with lots of pets and poor living conditions. Animal hoarders live in a toxic environment putting house cleaners at risk for infection and disease. We Ask a House Cleaner what to do if a maid ends up at an animal hoarders house. Should there be an intervention? Serial animal hoarding a concern

MENANDS -- After New York State Police arrested five people in connection to an animal hoarding case in Schaghticoke animal rescuers at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society confirm they have taken in more than 400 cats from the same family over the past few years. Regina and Earl Millard along with Edward, Bertha and Mary Ryan are each facing more than 100 counts of failing to provide enough care for the animals. Police say all of these charges are misdemeanors and some are concerned this all could happen again. In April of 2012 Mary Ryan, her brother-in-law Arthur Millard and his son Earl were all charged with animal neglect. Two years earlier sisters Regina and Bertha were found in Vermont with 80 cats in their cars. Around that same time police also took another 50 cats from their Troy home. Before the Ryan's and Millard's were charged in this most recent case animal rescuers say they saw a few of the family members driving a moving truck around their house trying to get some of the cats back. Animal rescuers say it even appeared the family may have gone back into their home and tampered with some of the traps. The Humane Society says they seized at least four cats from that moving truck before the family was arrested. "Our numbers went up to 119 as of today," Mohawk Hudson Humane Society Tina Murray said. While that number of cats is startling it is nothing new for animal rescuer Murray. She says she has handled cat hoarding and has dealt with the same family several times. Although she says this time it was the worst. "We [...] have been completely overwhelmed," Murray said. Live traps are now being monitored to capture the dozens of cats still inside the Schaghticoke home on River Road. "So we will trap until we feel that we've gotten every cat out of the house," Murray said. For people like Dawn Bentley-Wilson, who was the first to adopt one of the cats rescued, it's concerning it may all happen again. "My heart just broke for all those animals. I mean none of these animals deserve to have to live in circumstances like that," Bentley-Wilson said while stroking her newly-adopted Siamise-Lynx mix 'Godiva.' "You have to be an animal lover to understand that, you know, this was just cruel. Just cruel to do this to them." Certain types of animal cruelty can be considered a felony crime under Buster's Law, which Assemblyman Jim Tedisco has fought for years to expand. But Tedisco says animal hoarding cases are a bit more complex. Tedisco is pushing for a statewide animal hoarder registry-- similar to the sex offender registry-- which he says would prevent repeat offenders from owning another pet. Tedisco says it is also important that people in these cases get psychiatric help. "If we don't provide a psychological evaluation to get to the deep rooted problems of why they're hoarding because to tell you the truth, if you ask them, they think they're helping the animal. They think they're caring for them so I don't think locking them away and then letting them out to do it over again is in the answer," Tedisco said. A dozen of the cats seized are now healthy enough for adoption. The humane society is hoping they can get about a dozen more cats healthy enough for adoption next week and in the weeks after that. The humane society is still looking for monetary donations as well as donations of canned cat food, kitty litter and towels. Animal rescuers say they have been helped along by donations from the community and a nearly $10,000 Emergency Relief Grant from PetSmart. The family arrested in connection to the Schaghticoke

Scientists Now Say Owning A Cat Might Cause Mental Illness And The Evidence Is Scary. Breaking news: cats can drive you crazy. Alright, so maybe that’s late-breaking news, but anyone with a cat can testify that their feline’s furniture-scratching and late-night energy bursts can be enough to trigger more than a few headaches. However, recent studies show that owning cats can have a very real effect on our brains. Scientific evidence suggests there’s a reason to be especially careful when cleaning out your cat’s litter box. Cat urine; cat pee, cat urinating problems, cat hoarding,Toxoplasmosis,

03:59
In the 90 second video we will go over some huge cat problems that exist in our society. First of all when you’re renting or buying a home you may want to look for cat evidence. During your preinspection, you may see rusted door hardware, painted concrete floors painted or damaged carpet tack board, dark yellow stuff oozing from walls, you may see odd use of baseboards, and you may find carpet corners that smell like cat urine. Investors who buy cat hoarder homes usually just paint them and install new carpets. Sometime, after you move into the home, the urine stains start to come out the walls. You may find that carpet is hiding or covering urine stained damage wood floors. Before buying a home, make sure the home is inspected by a home inspector. What if you have a cat or cat that pee at the wrong location such as a floor, or on the furniture or somewhere other than the litter box. Maybe the cat peed on the floor, under the couch and now the cat thinks it is the new place to pee. If this happens, you need to blot it up with a towel and then clean with a cold water vinegar solution at 3 to 1 ratio. Then sprinkle some backing soda on the area and mix ¾ of a cup hydrogen peroxide with one teaspoon of detergent. Take this mixture and spill it over the backing soda and let dry and later vacuum it up. Sometimes you have to repeat this process. If you do not do this, the cat may return to this area for a second pee. Next find our why the kitty peed at this location in first place. Do you have multiple cats? Does your cat have a medical condition? Maybe the cat does not like the current litter box location. Maybe you have a sprayer cat that pees on walls. It is also possible that your cat is fine and you the human are not. Maybe you have many cats from a Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or Focal Delusional Disorder, or Attachment Disorder, or you are am overwhelmed caregiver, or may be a recuse hoarder, regardless, the cat does not need medical attention, you do. Another problem with cats is that you think you need one for a companion or friend or something to preoccupy your time with. I am not a doctor, but maybe get rid of the cat and find a human friend or at least an internet chat friend. Finally, it is possible that you may be sick from the cat. I am not talking about allergies; I am talking about mental disorders from parishes that get distributed by cats. Cats have parasites . When you touch or change the cat litter box you may get this parasite. It is estatamatd that 80 million cats live indoors and another 70, million cats are homeless. The USA has 300 million people and 150 million cats, that’s a bunch of cats. This parasite lives in your brain. It is called Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite causes slowdown of your reaction time and may be responsible for many car accidents. In men this brain parasite causes ADD and if you haven’t noticed, men are getting dumber and dumber. This paracite causes women to have higher IQ’s and it also cause them to be more promiscuous which divorce lawyers love. For more information on thisa cat parasite, please watch may video called “Zombies Parasites also known as Toxoplasmosis Gondii” on my channel Cleveland Marko on YouTube in the link below. Number of dogs found in animal hoarding case rises to 91

01:36
Fulton County Animal Services says the number of dogs found in a Fulton County home over the weekend has risen from roughly 80 to 91. "We originally thought we had 53 dogs, but then that turned into about 80 and now it's at 91," LifeLine Animal Project Public Relations Director Karen Hirsch said. Sunday firefighters responded to the home on Lori Lane and discovered much more than a fire. "There were about 15 to 20 dogs outside in the backyard, but when I opened the front door all I could see was dogs," Fulton County Animal Services' Tim Poorman said. Poorman told FOX 5 News, the discovery is one of the worst cases of animal hoarding they've ever seen. "It's one of the top five worst ones we've seen," Poorman said. "The house was covered with feces and urine. All of these dogs were living on the 2000 square foot property." The homeowner who has not yet been identified is facing misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. "They are misdemeanor charges because we couldn't find any malice," Poorman said. "But in my experience, that means he will likely have to pay a hefty fine and probably won't be able to own any animals for as long as the judge sees fit." The dogs are now in the care of Fulton County Animal Services. "We had close to 300 dogs before this and now we've got well over," Hirsch said. "We are busting at the seams." The animals are receiving medical treatment and behavioral assessments before they will be available for adoption. "The public can help by coming and adopting the dogs we had here previously," Poorman said. "We need any help we can get," Hirsch said.
