Jean G. Ford, M.D. - The Hopkins 4K for Cancer

04:45
Jean G. Ford, M.D., Associate Professor, Director, Cancer Disparities Program, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center speaks to us at the send off in Baltimore Inner Harbor. The Center is one of the recipients of the funds raised for the 4K. The Hopkins 4K for Cancer is a completely student run, non-profit organization dedicated to uniting communities across the country in the fight against cancer. We have a three-fold misison: spreading awareness, raising funds, and fostering hope. Each summer, the students of Hopkins 4K undertake a 4,000-mile, two month bicycle trek from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , Maryland to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco , California . This year, we have pledged $40,000 to the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Baltimore, a temporary residence for cancer patients and their families. We have also pledged $10,000 specifically to the education and prevention programs at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and $5,000 to the Carolina Panthers' Keep Pounding Foundation for cancer research at the Carolinas Medical Center. By the time we reach San Francisco , we hope to donate many more dollars to other meaningful cancer organizations that inspire us along the way. We are working to help ease the pain that cancer has placed upon our families, friends and loved ones. Each morning we wake up early and bike 70 to 110 miles through America 's landscape, sharing our passion for our cause with everyone we meet. The trek will be a physical, mental, and spiritual battle, but it is one that we are excited to undertake. On the road we will dedicate much of our time to community service, such as helping with the Relay for Life in Cleveland , OH and visiting cancer patients at the Midland Hospice in Topeka , KS . We have been astonished at the number of incredible people we have met during these meaningful projects. We often find ourselves feeding off their strength in order to climb over the next set of mountains in front of us. Our nightly stops in churches and community centers also provide great opportunities for us to share our experiences with our gracious hosts. We hope that by sharing our enthusiasm throughout the journey, we will impress our passion for service upon others. 4K History Hopkins 4K for Cancer began in the fall of 2001 when co-founders Leah Blom and Ryan Hanley, sophomores at Johns Hopkins University , decided to combine their desire to do their part in the fight against cancer with their dream of cycling across the United States . This 4,000-mile journey from Baltimore to San Francisco was inspired by the memory of Ryan's father, the late John Hanley, who died in 1995 from cancer. 2007 is Hopkins 4K's sixth year. H4K has raised over $300,000 and has been recognized with several awards. In our first year, we were named the American Cancer Society's "Special Event of the Year" and were presented with the first ever Pioneer Award, an honor specially created for our "innovative, creative, and trailblazing efforts in the fight against cancer." Last year, we received the "Outstanding Youths in Philanthropy Award" from the Association of Fundraising Professionals as well as the Excalibur Award from the ACS for exceptional dedication to the fight against cancer. The Cause We will educate ourselves on the issue of cancer and remember those who have been affected by the disease. We will draw on our idealism and help spread awareness about cancer across the country. We will communicate with each other and work to create unity. We will follow through on our commitments and our word. We will be honest with each other and ask for help when we need it. We will motivate and support each other to do the best job possible. We will not yield to limitations. We owe it to each other and everyone who is inflicted with this disease to make this trip the experience and achievement of a lifetime. We dedicate all of the proceeds coming from our year of hard work towards cancer research in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Cancer Society

Republicans Repeal Disastrous Tax Cuts

07:18
Republicans in Kansas are doing the right thing and standing up against Governor Sam Brownback. Ana Kasparian, and John Iadarola, the hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://tytnetwork.com/join/ “TOPEKA The Republican dominated Kansas Legislature that has soured on Gov. Sam Brownback’s vision for the state voted late Tuesday to roll back the governor’s signature tax cuts. Lawmakers voted to override Brownback’s veto of a tax plan estimated to bring the state more than $1.2 billion over a two-year span. The Senate vote was 27 to 13, and the House followed by agreeing 88 to 31 to supersede the Republican governor’s wishes on the tax plan and force the changes into law. Lawmakers marshaled together a coalition of moderate Republicans, conservatives and Democrats to overcome the governor’s opposition to seeing his landmark tax cuts, which have in large part come to define his tenure in Topeka, fundamentally come to an end. Senate Vice President Jeff Longbine, an Emporia Republican, said that he respects the governor and other lawmakers. “Respect to me does not mean blind agreement,” Longbine said.” Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article154691724.html Hosts: Ana Kasparian, John Iadarola Cast: Ana Kasparian, John Iadarola *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. Kansas shooting: gunman Cedric Ford opens fire at Excel Industries, killing three - TomoNews

00:45
HESSTON, KANSAS — A gunman opened fire at multiple locations in Kansas, killing three people and injuring 14 others on Thursday. The gunman has been identified as 38-year-old Cedric Ford of Newton. It is believed he was armed with a .223-caliber assault-style rifle and a pistol. He was driving when he began the attack in the town of Newton, where he shot two drivers and stole one of the victim's car and drove to Excel Industries where Ford previously worked, Reuters reported. Most of the shootings took place at the factory in Hesston. It was not immediately clear whether Ford had been recently fired. "This is a horrible situation my friends, just terrible," Reuters quoted Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton as saying. "There were some things that triggered this particular individual." Authorities say Ford appears to have opened fire at random, despite the fact that many of the victims were his coworkers. Ford was shot dead by the first law enforcement officer on . ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Girl, 5, Collects Hundreds Of Dollars For Peace Selling Lemonade Outside Westboro Baptist Church

02:19
What happens when a little girl decides to set up a lemonade stand for peace outside the Westboro Baptist Church headquarters in Kansas? Members of the community step out in droves to show support, even as the hate group tries to quash it. Five-year-old Jayden, the daughter of Jon Sink, founder of the philanthropic arts group FRESHCASSETTE - Creative Compassion, decided to set up a stand selling pink lemonade at The Equality House on Friday afternoon. The Equality House is a rainbow-colored building directly across the street from Westboro's Topeka compound. The house, which was painted the colors of the pride flag in March, was bought by Aaron Jackson, one of the founders of Planting Peace, a multi-pronged nonprofit set up in 2004 and aimed at spreading goodwill and equality around the globe. Jayden, who is from Kansas City, decided to set up her stand at the Equality House after her parents explained to her the significance of its construct. After being told that the church across the street had a message of hate, she set a goal of raising money to go towards a message of love and peace. So she painted a banner for the event reading, "Pink Lemonade for Peace: $1 Suggested Donation." She put the stand in the grass and waited. But the waiting didn't take long. Supporters came in by the droves and $1 turned into hundreds of dollars. During the day, Westboro sent representatives outside to try and find a way to stop the event. They apparently attempted to call the local police and stooped to yelling profanities when that didn't work, like calling a group of soldiers who rode out on their motorcycles to suport the event "bastards." Westboro's hate couldn't stop Jayden. She not only raised $400 during the day on Friday, but she has also collected over $1000 with an online campaign set up through Crowd Rise. Some people donated as little as $10 and as much as $230. One person gave $26, dedicating it to every person killed six months ago in the Newtown, Conn., massacre. "As we all know, the Westboro Baptist Church puts a lot of hate into the world," Jackson told HuffPost in an email Friday. "Since we cannot stop them, the next best thing is to smother it with love. That is what 5-year-old Jayden accomplished today! Jayden set up a lemonade stand in front of the church. Not only did she quench the thirst of a lot of loving supporters, the money she raised was donated to Planting Peace so she could help Planting Peace promote a more peaceful world." "Jayden represents the natural humanity we are born with," Davis Hammet, Director of Operations at Planting Peace, added. "We come into this world compassionate, caring beings and only become hateful if we are taught to be."

This week, Sam Zeff reports on a proposed plan to dismantle the district. Education Reporter Lindsey Foat speaks with Not In Our Town Executive Producer Patrice O'Neill about bullying, hate crimes and how to prevent them. In 2012, Charlotte Street Foundation and The Nelson-Atkins Museum began presenting gallery tours and talks by Charlotte Street Awards Fellows. The 2014 Artist Walks kicked off last Friday with Sonie Ruffin. Randy Mason caught up with the Joplin, Missouri native to discuss her various artistic endeavors. And finally this week, we present the second installment of our new six-part series Ferment Nation as Doug Frost connects the dots between wine and entertainment. 00:37 This was one of the most important weeks ever in the almost 150 year history of the Kansas City School District. The unaccredited district is fighting for its very survival and that battle got tougher this week when a consultant group, hired by the state, released a much anticipated and controversial plan. The consultant group called CEE-Trust says the district has failed and wants the state to create something it calls a Community Schools Office to replace the district, but it would have little to do with education. Every building would be run by a non-profit, a charter school or a neighboring district. Also, all educational, hiring and budgetary decisions would be made at the building level. At a time when school transfer laws and accreditation are making headlines too, KCPT special correspondent Sam Zeff taps into an ongoing sentiment bubbling just below the surface about whether to dismantle the Kansas City School District altogether. The state will now study these various plans, but, if test scores in Kansas City public schools continue to improve, there's a good chance the district will be provisionally accredited, putting all of this on hold. 08:08 Last Monday, some 300 Kansas Citians gathered at UMKC for a conference on hate crimes and bullying and how they can be prevented. One of the speakers, Patrice O'Neill, is the executive producer of Not In Our Town, which has helped public television play an important role in that discussion for almost twenty years. Education Reporter Lindsey Foat talked with O'Neill while she was here. 11:40 It is hard to know exactly what to call Sonie Ruffin. The Joplin, Missouri native is a fabric artist, a textile designer and she also writes stories about the pieces and quilts she makes, some of which have been displayed in museums and galleries across the nation. She's a visiting curator at the American Jazz Museum, a Charlotte Street Foundation fellow and as Randy Mason will show you, a lot of fun to talk to. Ruffin will have several pieces featured in a new exhibit called "She-roes" starting at the Leedy Voulkous Gallery Feb. 3. Meanwhile the Art Walks series at the Nelson continues with a talk by Anne Austin Pearce on Feb.14. 18:35 Ferment Nation is a new digital series produced by KCPT featuring Doug Frost. Last week, we showed you how he preaches, above all, the gospel of flavor. This week, Doug and producer Kevin Lambi along with videographer Dave Burkhardt, explore how wine and entertainment go hand in hand.

Teaching Evolution as Xian Made Me an Atheist | Bruno - Springfield, MO | Atheist Experience 21.04

11:09
The Atheist Experience 21.04 for January 29, 2017 with Matt Dillahunty and Jen Peeples. Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279 We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show. ► http://freethoughtblogs.com/axp/ YouTube comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of YouTube comment sections, in our experience. We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors. ------- The most up to date Atheist Experience videos can be found by visiting http://atheist-experience.com/archive/ You can read more about this show on the Atheist Experience blog: ► http://freethoughtblogs.com/axp/ WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
