Jean G. Ford, M.D. - The Hopkins 4K for Cancer

04:45
Jean G. Ford, M.D., Associate Professor, Director, Cancer Disparities Program, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center speaks to us at the send off in Baltimore Inner Harbor. The Center is one of the recipients of the funds raised for the 4K. The Hopkins 4K for Cancer is a completely student run, non-profit organization dedicated to uniting communities across the country in the fight against cancer. We have a three-fold misison: spreading awareness, raising funds, and fostering hope. Each summer, the students of Hopkins 4K undertake a 4,000-mile, two month bicycle trek from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , Maryland to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco , California . This year, we have pledged $40,000 to the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Baltimore, a temporary residence for cancer patients and their families. We have also pledged $10,000 specifically to the education and prevention programs at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and $5,000 to the Carolina Panthers' Keep Pounding Foundation for cancer research at the Carolinas Medical Center. By the time we reach San Francisco , we hope to donate many more dollars to other meaningful cancer organizations that inspire us along the way. We are working to help ease the pain that cancer has placed upon our families, friends and loved ones. Each morning we wake up early and bike 70 to 110 miles through America 's landscape, sharing our passion for our cause with everyone we meet. The trek will be a physical, mental, and spiritual battle, but it is one that we are excited to undertake. On the road we will dedicate much of our time to community service, such as helping with the Relay for Life in Cleveland , OH and visiting cancer patients at the Midland Hospice in Topeka , KS . We have been astonished at the number of incredible people we have met during these meaningful projects. We often find ourselves feeding off their strength in order to climb over the next set of mountains in front of us. Our nightly stops in churches and community centers also provide great opportunities for us to share our experiences with our gracious hosts. We hope that by sharing our enthusiasm throughout the journey, we will impress our passion for service upon others. 4K History Hopkins 4K for Cancer began in the fall of 2001 when co-founders Leah Blom and Ryan Hanley, sophomores at Johns Hopkins University , decided to combine their desire to do their part in the fight against cancer with their dream of cycling across the United States . This 4,000-mile journey from Baltimore to San Francisco was inspired by the memory of Ryan's father, the late John Hanley, who died in 1995 from cancer. 2007 is Hopkins 4K's sixth year. H4K has raised over $300,000 and has been recognized with several awards. In our first year, we were named the American Cancer Society's "Special Event of the Year" and were presented with the first ever Pioneer Award, an honor specially created for our "innovative, creative, and trailblazing efforts in the fight against cancer." Last year, we received the "Outstanding Youths in Philanthropy Award" from the Association of Fundraising Professionals as well as the Excalibur Award from the ACS for exceptional dedication to the fight against cancer. The Cause We will educate ourselves on the issue of cancer and remember those who have been affected by the disease. We will draw on our idealism and help spread awareness about cancer across the country. We will communicate with each other and work to create unity. We will follow through on our commitments and our word. We will be honest with each other and ask for help when we need it. We will motivate and support each other to do the best job possible. We will not yield to limitations. We owe it to each other and everyone who is inflicted with this disease to make this trip the experience and achievement of a lifetime. We dedicate all of the proceeds coming from our year of hard work towards cancer research in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Cancer Society

Around Kansas - TB in Kansas in the 1900's - February 15, 2017

04:32
(Frank) Okay, we’re back again. And I will settle down, we have some good stories to talk to you about here today. (Deb) Yes, this first one is serious. I’ve got to tell you, we’re going to talk about how just a century ago, because I’m all about history, I don’t remember this, unlike Frank who remembers these actual occurrences, I don’t’ remember this. When TB was such a rampant problem around the world, still is in many countries, but in America it was truly a problem. I come across that in a lot of things, when I’m researching, I come across a lot of references. Going again in the Way-Back Machine to when I was a child, I remember my grandpa was going to a sanatorium because they thought he had TB. It turned out he had been a coal miner for 18 years, so it turned out it was only scar tissue. But I can remember how devastating that was for the family, because in those days they associated TB diagnosis with a death sentence. Because they had seen so many people die from the disease, and thankfully, we fight cancer, we fight all these other things, but the progress in our lifetimes in fighting TB is incredible. It’s just incredible. And so many, polio, in our lifetimes has just turned around. I have a lot of friends and relatives who are just, what, barely older than I am, that did not have the inoculations that I had. You can remember what the world was like before those things. This is a pretty important story. It was called "consumption" because the disease seemed to consume its victims. They dropped weight, coughed, hacked and became walking shells of themselves. One of the most famous sufferers was John Henry "Doc" Holliday who came west in the hopes that the dry air would offer some relief. Tuberculosis. TB. The White Death. A diagnosis of the disease was virtually a death sentence a mere century ago. Cases of TB have been recorded since ancient times, and because of the way it ravaged the body and its infectious nature, it even became associated with vampire lore. Tuberculosis ravaged America. Pulmonary Tuberculosis, the manifestation of the disease in the lungs, was most commonly recognized. It was such a widespread and devastating disease that states built sanatoriums, long-term hospitals to treat patients and halt the spread of the disease. While some people viewed the sanatoriums as mere holding facilities where people waited to die, or just a way to isolate them from society, the bed rest, breathing treatments and medicines did help many patients regain their health and return to their families. The Norton State Tuberculosis Sanatorium opened in 1914 and the Hillcrest Hospital in the Highland Park community of Topeka became affiliated with the facility. These hospital complexes would be comparable to the Veteran's Administration Hospitals that many of us are familiar with today. The hospitals maintained their own farms and dairies and stressed healthy diet as part of the treatment. Weight gain was a measure of recovery. Records say the Norton facility resembled a small city. It has since been converted to the Norton Correctional Facility. Vaccinations and increased understanding of the spread of the disease has largely controlled its impact in Kansas today, though health officials remain vigilant and monitor cases of TB very closely.

Date: July 13, 2010 Event: Illegal Means Illegal- Kris Kobach & Sheriff Joe Arpaio Location: Ritz Charles, 9000 W. 137th St, Overland Park Type of Recording: Video Crowd Size: Around 200 Recap: Todd Tiahrt and other people speaking about Pro-Life issues Press Coverage There were no press there. Other Speakers, VIPs, Elected Officials Patricia LIghtner, Ron Estes, Mary O'Brien, Sam Brownback, Kris Kobach and David Powell were there but didn't speak Speech Notes: Mentions white cards- that white cards have addresses get put on at the same time. Says she got a call from Sesil Washington in D.C.- and his wife Audrey from Topeka, KS came to sing their song "cry for the unborn". Suggests donation, introduces Sesil and Audrey Washington. Sesil talks about history of their song, mentions Star Parker who grew up in Las Angeles and had six abortions- she gave her life to the Lord and she became a strong pro-life advocate. She spoke at a rally in Topeka in 2007 and at that time he and his wife were asked to come and supply music. The night before the rally, the lord gave his wife the words to the song they presented. They recorded the song in the studio since March- song lasts 5 1/2 minutes. The lord inspired Sesil to put more than just the song on the cd so a 9 1/2 minute spoken message follows the song- facts concerning abortion, biblical principles verifying that the baby is truly a person and shares biblical principles offering hope, help, and healing for those who have faced unplanned pregnancies and made wrong decisions. In preparing the CD, his mind has been blown away. There are not many African-Americans in that room- he can count them on two hands. The devastation of abortion, over 50 million since Roe v. Wade, over 13 million have been in the African American community, which has been voting for Pro-Choice candidates. He and his wife are on a mission to help open up the community's eyes. Wants to do more than just save babies- when the project was completed, ran into a woman on the street, she had taken her 16-year-old daughter to get an abortion the previous week. He told her she and her daughter had to be ministered to- their table has flyers of information about what they're trying to achieve with the ministry and to get one of their CDs. On the CD also have a prayer of confession, a gospel- they encourage people to listen to it, especially with young, child-bearing loved ones.

Kansas shooting: gunman Cedric Ford opens fire at Excel Industries, killing three - TomoNews

00:45
HESSTON, KANSAS — A gunman opened fire at multiple locations in Kansas, killing three people and injuring 14 others on Thursday. The gunman has been identified as 38-year-old Cedric Ford of Newton. It is believed he was armed with a .223-caliber assault-style rifle and a pistol. He was driving when he began the attack in the town of Newton, where he shot two drivers and stole one of the victim's car and drove to Excel Industries where Ford previously worked, Reuters reported. Most of the shootings took place at the factory in Hesston. It was not immediately clear whether Ford had been recently fired. "This is a horrible situation my friends, just terrible," Reuters quoted Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton as saying. "There were some things that triggered this particular individual." Authorities say Ford appears to have opened fire at random, despite the fact that many of the victims were his coworkers. Ford was shot dead by the first law enforcement officer on . ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279 We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show. ► http://freethoughtblogs.com/axp/ YouTube comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of YouTube comment sections, in our experience. We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors. ------- The most up to date Atheist Experience videos can be found by visiting http://atheist-experience.com/archive/ You can read more about this show on the Atheist Experience blog: ► http://freethoughtblogs.com/axp/ WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE? Teaching Evolution as Xian Made Me an Atheist | Bruno - Springfield, MO | Atheist Experience 21.04

11:09
The Atheist Experience 21.04 for January 29, 2017 with Matt Dillahunty and Jen Peeples.
