⚓️ NOMAD - Understanding Boat Plans

10:41
This is an introduction to understanding a typical set of boat plans. This is really a basic primer for those who are unfamiliar with them. I'll go into greater detail in another video. The plans shown are of the Canadian Ugo canoe built by J.H.Rushton. These plans were purchased from the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake NY. I built a 14' version of this canoe for the Vancouver International Airport where it remains on display alongside an Inuvialuit kayak I also built. They can be found in their International arrivals area. There is a second canoe in the display built by Rod Tait of Orca boats. You can find his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/OrcaBoats My website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com I post daily on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding/ Support these videos at Patereon: https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding music: Daily Beetle by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1500025 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

My Three Week Strip Canoe Build in 3 Minute Time Lapse

03:22
I built my canoe in three weeks, here it is condensed into only 3(ish) minutes. Check out my series "The Three Week Strip Canoe Build" for the full build complete with my riveting commentary and explanations. It's in my Channel Playlist for your convenience. Wooden Boat Fishing, Me and my stuff: My Boats: The original single seater Kayak is a Great Auk designed by Nick Shade of Guillemot Kayaks and built by me with my own two hands. It’s 16 1/2 feet long (the design is 17 feet, but I scaled it to fit in the garage I built it in) and 24 inches wide. This was the first boat I ever built. “Tiny” the double kayak is another Nick Shade design (Micro Bootlegger) and was also built by me. Videos of the later parts of the build are on my channel for your perusal (don’t forget to like and comment). It’s 18 feet long and 28 inches wide, for a stable and roomy ride, even with a bunch of fishing stuff riding along with me (or a second person). My “Three Week Canoe” was, once again, built by yours truly, and you can see the entire build in my award winning video series “The Three Week Strip Canoe Build”. Available on a computer screen near you. The design is the classic “Puddle Duck” by Gil Gilpatrick. Last by not least (just kidding, yes it is), is my experimental and highly controversial “Stand Up Paddle Pontoon Catamaran Mini Party Barge”. Built AND designed by me, with no help or consultation of any kind from anyone. Which may explain why it confuses the hell out of anyone who sees it and why it has never actually been in the water (as of this writing anyway). Stay tuned for the launch, it’s gonna be amusing. My Bike: My bike is a Schwinn (don’t you just love saying that?) Meridian Trike, because nothing says secure in his masculinity like riding down the side of US1 on a tricycle (I’m thinking of starting a trike club, we’ll get heavy leather jackets and sweat a lot, how cool am I?). Mine is tricked out with an LED headlight for early morning rides, a gigantic basket to hold all of my stuff, and four custom made PVC rod holders held on with the best hose clamps money can buy. Fishing Gear: My gear is mostly whatever cheap stuff I find at yard sales or on clearance, but when I buy quality it’s usually the Penn Fierce II series of spinning rod and real combos. What I like best about this Penn line is the name. Seriously, who doesn’t want to be “Fierce” (they work pretty well too). I’m also a fan of Mustad hooks (when I’m not cheating out and buying generics). Cameras: I have two primary cameras and a back up. The primaries are a GoPro Hero4 Black that I chose because someone offered it to me in trade for an arcade game I was trying to get rid of, and a GoPro Hero Session 4 that was a fathers day gift, so I will worship and treasure it forever (or until it quits working, whichever comes first). My backup camera is an iPhone 7 because, well duh, its got a camera built right in. I do all of my editing on my iMac desktop computer because I’m old enough that I don’t just do it all on a laptop and I use the free GoPro Studio editing software because I’m cheap and don’t want to have to learn to use something better. That’s me and my stuff. See you on the water.

Viola 14 Sailing Canoe with a stable planing dinghy hullform. DIY

03:04
Light fast home build sailing dinghy has the form factor of sailing canoe for light weight and good performance. More information https://www.storerboatplans.com/plan/viola-14-sailing-canoe/viola-sailing-canoe-plan-coming-soon-rooftop-sailing-dinghy/ The dinghy hullshape gives the 75lb hull much more stability than the normal sailing canoe but with a planing dinghy stability and top end. In Raids and other events with the optional Lug rig it has proved to be fast right through the wind range against larger boats and quite capable of keeping going in rough conditions when larger boats have headed for shore. Thanks to Joost and Viola for taking the footage (and building the boat of course!) and Daniel Caselli for the video editing.

In my shop, there is a lot of left over basswood from my grandad's carving days and one of the pieces is really long; perfect for a paddle handle. Canoe paddles are a perfect mix of function and form. They should be comfortable to use and move efficiently through the water, while showcasing beautiful woods and awesome patterns. I decided on basswood to run the length of the paddle from blade to handle, and add some walnut, maple, and teak striping to add width and color contrast. These pieces were glued up and clamped together to make the paddle blank. Instead of using a pre-printed template, I drew half the shape of the paddle onto a long piece of paper folded over. I cut it out and unfolded it to reveal the full template. Afterward, the template was attached to the blank using spray adhesive and I cut out the shape using the band saw. It is important to leave room on the outside of the template so I could sand up to the lines. There will be a lot of sanding on this project so I left a lot of material after the rough cut. You could use any number of methods to shape the paddle; spoke shaves, cutter heads, sand paper, each of these vary in aggressiveness and speed, but for my first time shaping something like this, I used a sanding disc on my angle grinder. I took my time and made very shallow passes with the flap disc, making sure not to take off too much material. Furthermore, be sure to alternate sanding each face of the paddle as you approach the centerline so you don't over-sand and have a unbalanced profile. Taking light passes allowed me to make shaping decisions as I went. Overall, I went with a slightly convex profile on each face that met at a semi-sharp edge. The length of the handle has a rounded shape that fit the size of my hands really well. At the end of the paddle, I sanded a comfortable grip that has a slight indention to fit the curvature of my hand. I was super excited to see how nice the shaping turned out using such an aggressive tool. The paddle was sanded smooth with some 200 grit sand paper on my orbital sander. I researched how to finish a canoe paddle and couldn't get a clear answer on recommended methods. Spar urethane is used on many outdoor projects to protect the wood from the elements, but some people say that is it rough on the hands. One article said that a wooden canoe paddle had to be rubbed down with oil each week to ensure a quality finish, but that is way more care than I intend on giving. I decided on using the spar urethane because the paddle wouldn't see heavy use. The oil-based finish really made the contrasting wood pop and after sanding and applying a few coats, the paddle was ready to go. Josh and I lugged the heavy canoe down to the water, but I noted how light the paddle was. The basswood is light, but very dense which makes it great for such a labor-intensive object. In conclusion, the paddle held up great to being push against rocks, smacking the side of the canoe, and propelling me through the water. I am super happy with how this project turned out, and I think its simplistic yet timeless style really fits my granddad's old canoe. If you liked this project, check out more of work!

NEW: Skin-on-Frame Canoe Building Course Introduction

04:21
We've finally launched our new Skin-on-frame Canoe Building Course: The 66 Canoe. Plans and instructional videos available at: https://cape-falcon-kayak.thinkific.com/courses/skin-on-frame-canoe-building-course Originally envisioned as a lightweight double-paddle pack canoe, the 66 evolved into a complete building system that allows you to change every aspect of the canoe’s shape with an easy to use, formula-based system that doesn’t require you to build a time consuming canoe mold. We offer a range of tested canoe designs as well as advice and support for designing your own canoe. Features: The “balanced tension” design of the 66 doesn’t require permanent thwarts, allowing you to dynamically trim the boat while paddling, easily adjust for different gear configuration, steer the boat with weight-shift under sail, or just lay back and stare at the sky. An integrated system of floorboards double as outriggers, allowing two canoes to be rapidly catamaran-ed together for a fun, stable, paddle-able, sail-able platform. A safe, simple, downwind/crosswind sail built into the design lets you take advantage of favorable breezes and still have a clean, uncluttered canoe. The 66 can be nested together like Russian dolls, allowing you to transport and store two or more canoes in the same space as one. Lightweight, simple, versatile, sizable, this is the 66 canoe. http://www.capefalconkayaks.com

Making a Cedar Strip Kayak - Project Overview

35:44
Watch the whole kayak building project from buying wood to launching the finished cedar strip kayak. I documented the complete build of a microBootlegger Sport strip-built kayak in a 68 episode vlog. Here I boil it down to a single half hour. This kayak is made from western red cedar that I bought as boards and milled into 3/16" strips. The design is my own. I cut forms on a ShopBot CNC machine. The cedar strips are assembled on the forms with hot-melt glue and without staples. I used a Robe-Bevel tool to shape the strips for tight seams. The assembled strips are scraped, planed and sanded to a fair surface before applying stain, fiberglass and epoxy. You Can Build the Best Kayak Storage Rack - Cheap & Easy!

06:42
I thought I would share this in case anybody else needs an idea on how to build a storage rack for your kayaks. I tried to include enough info so that you could exactly duplicate this rack if you want to, but one of the neat things about this plan is how customizable it is. Using PVC pipe and fittings like I've done, with just minor changes you can make a rack to fit one kayak or as many as you want. You can mount it to a wall like I did, make it stand alone with support legs or even put wheels on it. You can put shelves on both sides if you want to. To build one like mine, it can be done in a day and it's relatively inexpensive too. Questions are welcome. Just leave in the comments below and I will do my best to give you a good answer if I can. Hope this is helpful or at least interesting to somebody. Thanks for watching! Music: "Monks" by Topher Mohr & Alex Elena "Garage" by Topher Mohr & Alex Elena

Cedar Strip Canoe Ep 9 Hull Interior

07:41
Visit my website at www.chronicwoodwork.com for more information, plans, and merch. Cedar Strip Canoe Build #9: Hull Interior This is my ninth video in a series of videos on how to build a cedar strip canoe. This video focuses on creating the canoe cradles, preparing the hull interior, and fiberglass & epoxying (glassing) the interior of the canoe hull. In this video, I fill small cracks between cedar planks with wood filler and sand the hull, then flip and glass the interior. This is essentially the last step of work on the hull itself before transitioning to the trim pieces. If anything is unclear after watching the video, please feel free to leave a comment below. I do my best to respond quickly. Young Lady Builds Beautiful Cedar Strip Canoe

02:09
From Logs to Lake: A local landslide in Northeast Washington inspired a high school student and her woodshop teacher to transform cedar logs into a beautiful canoe. It is made of Western Red Cedar, Mahogany, Black Walnut, White Ash, and Birch.  The plans were taken from the book, Building a Strip Canoe, by Ted Moores.  It is the Puddle Duck design.  Following is a group of slides showing the process from start to finish, and a brief video of the canoe on its madian voyage. Filmography done by Ted Hawk near Metaline Falls, Washington.

How I made a one sheet plywood boat

07:07
This is how I made a small one sheet plywood boat. This is not a complicated build. Only requires a few tools and is limited to one sheet of construction plywood, screws and silicone. The boat is constructed from four parts. Three sides and a bottom. If you want some more details check out the instructable here : https://www.instructables.com/id/One-Sheet-Plywood-Boat The plywood sheet costs around 20$, the screws 3$ and the wetroom silicone around 7$. Total cost around 30$. It's not really "seaworthy" but a fun little boat for the kids (and maybe someone that is a bit smaller than me). :-) The build took a couple of hours. I had no plan building this, so I made it up as I went along. This was a fun build and our kids loves to use the boat. I built this last summer, so there is both old and new footage. It has allready survived one summer (and winter). I'm planning on doing some upgrades to it for better comfort and stability. I will return with another video about that (maybe). :-) A better boat would be created by two sheets of plywood. Maybe I will try that next time too. Thanks for watching!
