Creative Writing Lessons: Bestselling, award winning author Neil Gaiman on writing For more help with your own writing, join my latest Udemy course for better than half price! https://www.udemy.com/novel-bootcamp-imagine-plan-and-start-writing-that-book/?couponCode=YOUTUBE_29 This is a slightly random Q&A with Neil Gaiman which explores his thoughts on ideas, writing, publishing and robots. With questions and answers from a number of different interviews, Neil Gaiman talks eloquently and entertainingly on a number of subjects. He starts by tackling the question all writers hate; where do you get your ideas from? He jokes about this first but then explains why this is, and why this is such a difficult question for writers, before coming up with a very simple answer and making everyone laugh. He then answers couple of questions from slips of paper sent in by fans. Do you believe in what you write or is it all complete fiction for you? Then a question about whether the fantasy genre might go out of fashion. He talks about publishing then, and how these things work, and answers very honestly about its fashions and trends. He's then asked whether robots might take over the world; possibly his most entertaining response :) Finally, Neil talks about the power of ideas and freedom of speech in a moving speech in response to the Charlie Hebdo attacks in France. Throughout the video, Gaiman is funny, frank and to the point. Don't miss his writerly wisdom! Thanks for watching. Primary literacy lesson: how to teach children story writing

10:23
You can use this film as a 'virtual teacher' in your classroom. Just play it through the interactive whiteboard to show your class one way of planning a story. An ideal way to use this is to show the whole film once, then play again, pausing after each line or paragraph to allow the children to fill in their plans. This usually takes 2 or 3 lessons. The example in the film is a Greek myth but the same rules can apply for all types of narrative.

Learn English Grammar – Easiest way to c Active voice sentences to Passive Voice in simple present tense. Blog : http://www.learnex.in/easiest-way-to-convert-active-voice-sentences-to-passive-voice-in-simple-present-tense In this English Grammar lesson, you are going to learn how to make active voice sentences in the present tense into passive voice sentences. The active voice is used to give importance to the subject or the doer of the action and the passive voice gives importance to the object. Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/letstalkpodcast Website : http://www.letstalkpodcast.com There are basic steps you follow to convert the sentences from active to passive. Interchange the subject and object Take the main verb in its past participle form. Do not change the tense of the original sentence, so add an auxiliary verb. Ensure the doer of the action does not change once the sentence is in the passive voice. Example 01: Mother writes an email. (active) An email is written by mother. (passive) Example 02: Sam is fixing the computer. (active) The computer is being fixed by Sam. Example 03: John has helped Maria. (active) Maria has been helped by John. (passive) Example 04: Why does your brother sing such sad songs? (active) Why are such sad songs sung by your brother? (passive) Example 05: Who is doing the dishes? (active) By whom are the dishes being done? (passive) Example 06: Why have you called me here? (active) Why have I been called here by you? (passive)

What are the universal human rights? - Benedetta Berti

04:47
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/what-are-the-universal-human-rights-benedetta-berti The basic idea of human rights is that each one of us, no matter who we are or where we are born, is entitled to the same basic rights and freedoms. That may sound straightforward enough, but it gets incredibly complicated as soon as anyone tries to put the idea into practice. What exactly are the basic human rights? Who gets to pick them? Who enforces them—and how? Benedetta Berti explores the subtleties of human rights. Lesson by Benedetta Berti, animation by Sarah Saidan.

The Pixar Way to Think About Story Conflict

03:02
http://helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com http://www.kmweiland.com Historical and speculative novelist K.M. Weiland offers tips and essays about the writing life to help other writers understand the ins and outs of the craft and the psychology behind the inspiration. This week’s video offers two lessons you can learn from the complicated story conflict in Toy Story to improve your own writing. Video Transcript: Conflict, conflict, conflict! It’s like this mantra among fiction writers, right? And we all nod our heads in agreement, because we all know story conflict is integral to good storytelling. But even though all humans totally get conflict on its most obvious level—altercation—understanding its uses and implementation in a story is sometimes a little harder to get our heads around. Today, I’m going to use a fabulous object lesson about good story conflict that we can learn from Pixar’s seminal work Toy Story. This lesson is two-fold, and I’m just come straight out and tell you the first one. Lesson #1 is simply this: story conflict isn’t actually about character altercations. Story conflict is nothing more or less than the meeting of your character’s goal with an obstacle that gets in the way of that goal. The character is [here], the goal is [here]—and the obstacle (the conflict)? Right [here]. So for our example, I want you remember the scene in Toy Story’s Third Act in which the evil neighbor kid Sid has strapped Buzz to a rocket and taken him out to the yard to blow him up—leaving Woody locked in the bedroom. Saving Buzz is the goal, and the locked door is an obstacle creating conflict. Pretty simple, right? And this conflict leads Woody to concocting a whole plan that begins with unlocking the door. Now let’s say overcoming that first bit of conflict and achieving that first goal was end the of the scene. Nothing wrong with that; it is well structured. But complications are the stuff of good fiction and good conflict. And so we should certainly not be surprised that master storytellers such as those as Pixar didn’t stop there. What’s waiting for Woody on the other side of that door once he finally gets it unlocked? Scud the psycho bull terrier—another, even more dangerous obstacle! Just like that, the conflict is upped, and the story is able to keep right on rolling. And that is Lesson #2.

It provides a scientific explanation of the laws that help you do this, building up a scientific model, speaking in detail about particular rules to follow and giving important how-to tips, illustrated with examples. Bringing together the cutting edge of modern science and philosophical teaching, the books style is popular-scientific, metaphorical and conversational. This second volume explains why desires arent always fulfilled, and why dreams dont come true. For that to happen, you need to know how to ask for it. The book describes how you can do this. You will discover how to find your own Path and see that your possibilities are only limited by your intention. It answers the questions: what is choice, and how do you choose and this is not secret. •●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●• Your desires are not fulfilled, your dreams don’t come true. Aren’t you tired of chasing the sunset? The exit is not where you are seeking… Everyone has his/her path leading to true happiness. How can you find one? Here’s the book that will give you the answer. The only thing that is powerful is your intention. You make your choice just as you make an order at a restaurant, without having to worry about the means to gain whatever you need. As a result, the purpose is reached no matter what you do. Transurfing explains what this choice is and how it can be consciously made. Where do dreams come from? Are they just the plot of our imagination? What do gut feelings, intuition, discoveries and masterpieces of art have in common? The second stage of Transurfing is the point when the mystery of ancient wizards who built Egyptian pyramids is unveiled. In order to get what you want you have to learn how to make your “order”. This book contains practical tips on how to make your desire real. •●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●• Listen all books by Vadim Zeland http://goo.gl/KZHsMM •●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●•●• Subscribe & Listen! http://goo.gl/NQjTXY

Why humans run the world | Yuval Noah Harari

17:09
Seventy thousand years ago, our human ancestors were insignificant animals, just minding their own business in a corner of Africa with all the other animals. But now, few would disagree that humans dominate planet Earth; we've spread to every continent, and our actions determine the fate of other animals (and possibly Earth itself). How did we get from there to here? Historian Yuval Noah Harari suggests a surprising reason for the rise of humanity. The goal of this lesson is to help you finish the test on time without compromising your understanding of the readings. Learn how to read less while answering more questions correctly. After watching, make sure to do the quiz to test your understanding. Good luck on your test! https://www.engvid.com/ielts-3-reading-strategies/ https://www.GoodLuckIELTS.com/ https://www.writetotop.com/ WATCH NEXT IELTS Writing: The 3 Essay Types https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ-Vyqxn1To TRANSCRIPT Hi again. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is about IELTS. As usual, with IELTS lessons, I will be speaking a little bit faster than normal. It's good for your listening practice. But if you're not taking the IELTS, you can still listen and try to follow us as we go through this section. So, let's begin. Today, I'm going to look at the IELTS reading section. I'm going to look at three different approaches to tackling the IELTS reading section. Students always ask me: "What should I do with the reading? How do I do it? How can I finish on time? How can I answer more questions?" Right? So I'm going to give you three approaches, three different ways to try to do the IELTS. Okay? We're going to look at three different ways. They're completely different from each other. The most important thing I want to tell you before we start: you have to know what works for you. Okay? One of these approaches will work for you; the others may not. Practice all three. If you're comfortable with one and it seems to work for you, and your score seems to be getting better, stick with that one and practice that one. Don't try to do all three each time. Figure out which one works, and just practice that one the most. Okay? The most obvious one and the first one we're going to talk about: read the entire passage, and then tackle the questions. Now, a few things to say, good and bad, about this approach. So, you have 20 minutes, let's say, that you're going to start from the first passage, you're going to do about 17 minutes; the second passage, you're going to spend 20 minutes; the last passage, you're going to spend 23, 24, 25 minutes. So, you have to do this very fast. So: can you read the entire passage and do the questions in that timeframe? Okay? That's the question you must ask yourself. Are you a fast reader? Can you comprehend everything you're reading? How is your vocabulary? Things like this. Some people, they must read everything, from beginning to end, and then go to the questions. But they can also keep; they can retain the information they've read, so when they go to the questions, they know where to go back and look for the answers. Now, the good part about this is that you have all the information in your head once you've read the entire passage. The bad part is that you're going to be reading the passage twice. Okay? Or not the whole passage, but you're going to read big chunks of the passage twice. You'll have read it the first time, you'll go to the questions, and then you'll be reading again to find the answers, because you're looking for specific words now. When you get to the questions, sometimes it's only one word difference from what you read in the passage. So, do I recommend this? Yes and no. If you're a fast reader and you can comprehend, then yes, do that. If you're not a fast reader, then no, don't do this. You'll be wasting too much time and reading more than you need to. What I'm going to do with these two approaches is show you how to read less. So you don't need to read the entire passage; you just need to read the areas that contain the answers to the questions. So, the second approach: go straight to the questions. You look at the question. First of all, understand the type of the question. Is it a multiple choice? Is it a fill-in-the-blank, like a summary? Are you looking for like headings for each paragraph? Are you looking for the title? Etc. Figure out what you're looking for, read the question carefully, pick out the keywords in the question or the key idea in the question, and then scan the passage. Don't read the passage. Just quickly look everywhere for where that information ought to be.

What characters say to each other is a key part of creative writing (unless it is a monologue or internal dialogue) so this lesson focuses on having realistic dialogue and how to keep a good balance between action and dialogue. This lesson was created for my friends at learning bird. Check out more of their videos at http://www.learningbird.com
