A Rule Is To Break: A Child's Guide to Anarchy

00:52
book trailer for A Rule is to Break- A Child's Guide to Anarchy. From Publishers Weekly. "Many children's books encourage self-expression and free thought; few take those ideas as far as this collaboration from Seven and Christy, the duo behind The Ocean Story (2011). "The opposite of rules is anarchy!" opens the book as a blue-haired girl leaps naked across the page. Various ways to insert a little anarchy into one's life follow. "Don't look like everybody else! Be you," Seven writes as the girl sews a devil costume for herself. Anticommercial sentiments run through several scenes ("Paint pictures on your TV! Forget about grocery stores and get dirty in your garden!"), and even adult readers taken aback by lines like "When someone says 'Work!', you say Why?" and "No baths ever again!" will be able to get behind suggestions to "Educate yourself. Use your brain" and "Listen to the tiniest voice." This is the softer side of anarchy, with an emphasis on fun and independence, but also community and kindness. Seven and Christy's heroine wouldn't look out of place in a Peter H. Reynolds story, and their message isn't far from his work either—it's just been cranked up to 11. Ages 4--up. (Dec.)" Music is by The Mighty Atom.

Guided Reading in a 3rd Grade Classroom

07:16
: Small group instruction and guided reading are critical components of the reading block. Guided reading, as defined by Fountas and Pinnell, is a teaching approach designed to help individual students learn how to process a variety of increasingly challenging texts with understanding and fluency. Small groups are made up of students with similar instructional reading levels and learning needs. Through guided reading, students learn how to develop and use strategies to construct meaning from text. Teachers pull small groups for guided reading while other students are engaged in Daily 5 activities or other valuable literacy work. Small group guided reading lessons should be carefully planned in advance of the lesson. In this video, the teacher will work with a small group of 3rd grade students.

How to find and do work you love | Scott Dinsmore | TEDxGoldenGatePark (2D)

17:57
Scott Dinsmore's mission is to change the world by helping people find what excites them and build a career around the work only they are capable of doing. He is a career change strategist whose demoralizing experience at a Fortune 500 job launched his quest to understand why 80% of adults hate the work they do, and more importantly, to identify what the other 20% were doing differently. His research led to experiences with thousands of employees and entrepreneurs from 158 countries. Scott distilled the results down to his Passionate Work Framework - three surprisingly simple practices for finding and doing work you love, that all happen to be completely within our control. Is English Illogical? Think Again!

02:47
Do you think of English as illogical and full of exceptions? This video challenges you to rethink that assumption and see that English is based on a logical code which can be easily understood. Learning all the rules that govern English spelling, rather than just a few commonly taught rules that account for less than 50% of English words, paves the way for successful reading and spelling for all learners. For more information, see "Uncovering the Logic of English: A Common-sense Solution to America's Literacy Crisis" by Denise Eide, available at http://www.LogicOfEnglish.com

A Comic Book About Business Finance

04:00
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish You probably have heard of comic book heroes like Superman, Batman and Spiderman. But what about Tom the motorcycle shop owner, Joe Knight and Karen Berman? Tom, Joe and Karen all appear in a comic book called "Financial Intelligence." But Mr. Knight and Ms. Berman are real people. In two thousand six, they wrote a book called "Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide to Knowing What the Numbers Really Mean." It was written for people who need to learn quickly about accounting. The book explains, in simple ways, often-complex methods of keeping financial information. It became a best-seller. In June, publisher SmarterComics released a comic book that provides the same information in easy-to-understand, picture form. The new book is a combination of a textbook and a graphic novel. It tells the story of Tom, a mechanic who must quickly learn how to direct the motorcycle repair shop his father founded. Tom has no experience with finance, and is struggling with the business. Joe Knight and Karen Berman help him. Artist Dave Wachter made illustrations for the comic book.Franco Arda is the founder and head of SmarterComics. He formerly worked as an investment banker. He started the company almost three years ago with his own money. He wanted to create educational comic books that increase understanding. Franco Arda notes that many people grew up with comics. He says pictures combined with written text can help people learn an idea much more quickly than just text alone. This explains the expression, 'a picture says a thousand words.' "Financial Intelligence" will help readers quickly understand many of the major areas of accounting. The new comic book is available in paperback. The website Entrepreneur.com named SmarterComics to its list of 100 Brilliant Companies of 2012. The company has created comic book versions of more than ten other books. These include "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill, "The Prince" by Niccolo Machiavelli and "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu. Later this year, SmarterComics plans to release a comic book by rapper 50Cent.For VOA Special English, I'm Carolyn Presutti. Overcoming hopelessness | Nick Vujicic | TEDxNoviSad

14:54
Never miss a talk! SUBSCRIBE to the TEDx channel: http://bit.ly/1FAg8hB Nick talks about the importance of parenting in early childhood and it's significance in overcoming hopelessness. Willpower is a driving force for making our big dreams come true, but if we don't get a miracle in life, we can always be a miracle to someone else. Nick Vujicic was born in Australia to a Serbian immigrant family, with a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. Most of his childhood he struggled with depression, and after a suicide attempt he decided to concentrate on what he did have instead on what he didn't. He realized that his life story inspires many people. 1st Grade Reading Lesson

02:29
Imagine instead of starting with minimal vocabulary basal readers, first, second and third grade students are able to read such books as Where the Wild Things Are, The Velveteen Rabbit and Charlotte's Web, respectively. Imagine all students, whatever their socio-economic group, ethnicity or native language (even those at Title 1 schools or those in ESL/ELL programs), all succeeding in learning how to spell, write and read. Imagine a recently completed four-year study by Arizona State University showing one group of students — using a particular method to learn how to spell, write and read — having significantly higher achievement test scores when compared to those using other reading programs. And imagine a method where every parent and teacher can help children develop essential critical thinking skills and instill a love of learning and reading that will last a lifetime It's called "The Writing Road to Reading©," an integrated, multisensory, research-based, language arts curriculum using the principles of instruction in The Spalding Method®. Training in "The Writing Road to Reading" curriculum is offered exclusively through Spalding Education International (SEI). SEI's mission is to increase literacy for all children and adults by using The Spalding Method to develop skilled readers, critical listeners, and accomplished writers and spellers. The late Romalda B. Spalding, author of "The Writing Road to Reading," founded the organization in 1986. How Will You Measure Your Life? Clay Christensen at TEDxBoston

19:31
"It's actually really important that you succeed at what you're succeeding at, but that isn't going to be the measure of your life." Too often, we measure success in life against the progress we make in our careers. But how can we ensure we're not straying from our values as humans along the way? Clayton Christensen, Harvard Business School professor and world-renowned innovation guru, examines the daily decisions that define our lives and encourages all of us to think about what is truly important. How to Write a Short Story in One Hour

56:15
Are you interested in writing fiction? Especially short stories? Or novels? Maybe humor? Mysteries? Sci-fi? Visit http://www.geniuswriter.info to learn how to do it. This page will show you a list of courses you can study. Regardless of what your writing interests are, you might find something at this page that will help you. For what it's worth, I would recommend it. These are excellent courses. This video you're watching here, however, I created myself. It will show you how to write a short story in one hour. If you watch it, it will help you with your creative writing and get the juices flowing for idea generation. It might even show you how to write a book if you pay close attention. Authors would do well to pay attention to this video, as it goes through the planning phases of short story writing. Most writers don't realize that there is a planning phase to all writing, and that this planning process is critical to the creative writing process and composing excellent fiction. If you're trying to write a short story, or any work of fiction for that matter, this video is for you. Be aware that writing a short story is simple, but it's not always easy. If you follow a proven process, however, you will find it is much easier to write a short story or book than if you simply sit down at a computer without any kind of plan in place. This video outlines the way to make a plan to write a good short story, and it will show you how to plan it in one hour. With practice, you'll be able to write a good short story in an hour or even less, depending on the length of your story. If you're interested in writing fiction or you're an aspiring author, this video will help you achieve your best writing, generate ideas, and lead you through the planning phases of writing. It will show you the four phase process of writing -- namely: Planning, writing, editing, and publishing. It will also show you the important aspects of how to write a short story, which involve developing the character, creating a problem the character can live with, creating motivation for that character to solve the problem, creating an action for that character to take to solve the problem or conflict, the resolution of the conflict, and finally the change the character goes through as a result of having to solve the problem and go through the actions of the short story. This video on how to write a short story in one hour is especially good for those that want to be writers but struggle with the short story writing process -- or those that stare at the page and have no idea where to even begin. If you're one of the many writers that struggles with the problem of writers' block or simply not knowing how to begin (or end) a short story, then you'll probably get a lot out of this video. This video also talks about some fundamental aspects of writing, the importance of balancing "appropriate" topics with "inappropriate" topics and why such a differentiation is important. It finally talks about other fundamentals, such as the importance of only letting your main character take action when he or she has a good reason to do so, setting up the events in your story, and wrapping up all the loose ends in your work of creative fiction. Don't struggle with your writing anymore. Watch this video in its entirety to get the full benefit. I don't talk at all about grammar or spelling (there are other videos that do that); I just tell you how to tell a good story and get it out on paper so you can be successful with it. If you like the video, or if you don't, you can feel free to leave a comment. You can also find my book on how to painlessly write a novel on Amazon Kindle at http://tinyurl.com/kevqd62. You can click it to download the book without any trouble. I've been writing for years, so I know what I'm talking about. I've had a lot of my creative work published, and I have no trouble whatsoever coming up with ideas for fiction. If you care about what I have to say (and I hope you do) then you can watch this video and see that you no longer have any problems writing short stories. I hope you enjoy! See a list of writing courses at http://www.geniuswriter.info . Thank you.
