My story is painted on my body | Chantelle Brown-Young | TEDxTeen

06:30
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is beauty? What makes someone or something beautiful? It's in everything you just have to see things differently. Take it from the fashion world's newest supermodel. The fashion industry has a new leading lady, who is serving up stunning images and redefining the global definition of beauty. Chantelle, who was diagnosed at age 4 with vitiligo, the skin condition that was made infamous by Michael Jackson, spent her youth bullied and tormented for her differences. Through all of the vocal and often volatile doubters, she believed her 5’10 frame, modelesque features and internal beauty could see her through to her dreams of becoming an international super model and spokeswomen for others with low self-esteem. At age 16, a local Toronto journalist, Shannon Boodram, discovered Chantelle and shared her story in a YouTube video. The video received over 150k views, as well as features in The Daily Mail and Access Hollywood. Her maturity, beauty and message resonated with fans around the world. Before her 18th birthday, she found herself encouraging people all over the world through her growing social media platforms. With her emerging success online, the fashion industry began to turn their heads her way as well. Despite being rejected by every single modeling agency in Toronto, designers, photographers and runway directors began to see the beauty that the rest of the world could see. Unrepresented, she was invited to walk in several Fashion Art Toronto shows in 2013. From there, she had several of the city’s top photographers clamoring to capture her. Along her unprecedented ride to notoriety, that same year, America’s Next Top Model producers caught wind of Chantelle fever. After being discovered by Tyra Banks, Chantelle was requested to compete in the 21st cycle of America’s Next Top Model. Even though Chantelle was Canadian and visibly had vitiligo, Tyra was ready to make all exceptions necessary to make a lifelong dream come true for this young girl who refused to be held back by her own skin. Cosmopolitan, Access Hollywood, Buzzfeed, The Insider and MTV all agree that Chantelle is the next IT girl, and anyone in the know can safely rest their hopes and dreams in this new face of beauty as well. Happiness is all in your mind: Gen Kelsang Nyema at TEDxGreenville 2014

15:56
Simple, profound truths are the realm of this Buddhist nun. Her message? The gift of happiness truly lies within our own hearts and minds. Gen Kelsang Nyema, exuding a peacefulness that immediately connects with the audience, starts by asking three questions: Are you having a good day? Why? Tomorrow, would you rather have a good day or a bad day? She teaches that we cannot put our happiness at the whim of other people and of circumstances. If we want to be happy, we have to "stop outsourcing our happiness to other people" and cultivate a source of inner peace. What happens next is quite astounding. The whole crowd of 350+ people proceeds to meditate with Nyema. There's a little squirming at first, but as she leads the audience through a calm citation of how to rest the mind, audience members feel a collective relaxation flow into the room and through the people. Fascinating! Refreshing. This talk was part of TEDxGreenville UNZIPPED, held April 11, 2014, at the Kroc Center in Greenville, South Carolina. Peta Murchison is a mother dedicated to raising awareness for Batten Disease - a rare degenerative genetic disease that affects otherwise healthy children who can sing, dance and bounce. From a young age affected kids start to lose their ability to walk, talk, see and smile. There is no cure for children affected and it will eventually take their lives. Awareness and research into this rare disease is imperative to find a cure. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Believing is seeing: a new perspective on body dysmorphia | Meredith Leston | TEDxOxford

17:11
This talk highlights the universality of body dysmorphia; this is a condition that affects us all to a greater or lesser degree. Meredith shares how her own experience of anorexia nervosa and the distorted body image that accompanied it drove her to better understand body dysmorphia. She goes on to discuss the variability of body dysmorphia and it’s potential neurological origins. Following on from this she proposes that perhaps a more ‘top-down’ or belief-driven approach to body dysmorhpia should be considered. Rather than examining how visual perception is distorted from the eye-level upwards, she proposes that our own held beliefs about ourselves may distort what we see in the mirror. Our bodies are capable of changing faster than our perceptions of ourselves; in the case of weight loss and weight gain, our beliefs, and even our greatest fears, may alter what we see in the mirror. Meredith Leston is a full-time student studying Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. She works as a mental health campaigner and started the campaign ‘Meeting of Minds’ whilst at university. This attempts to bring an academic spotlight to mental health and advocates the need for mental health education in schools. She recently won The Prime Minister’s Point of Light award for work promoting mental health awareness. After graduating she intends to start a charity focusing on providing developing countries with mental health education and infrastructure. She will also begin her PhD investigating gender differences in mental illness at Oxford this September. No Sex Marriage – Masturbation, Loneliness, Cheating and Shame | Maureen McGrath | TEDxStanleyPark

21:52
Love? Marriage? Sex? Can a married couple have all three? Perhaps it’s unrealistic since so many marriages end in divorce today. Why is that? One reason might be that a reported 20% of all marriages are sexless and that number is rising. Why have we lost the lust in our marriages? Is it technology, is it trust? More importantly, how can we “get back at it” in our marriages today? Maureen McGrath - nursetalk@hotmail.com - hosts the Sunday Night Sex Show on News Talk 980 CKNW. She is a Registered Nurse, Sex Educator and author of “Sex & Health". This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
