The purpose of this video is to share a technical service bulletin about oil changes on General Motors vehicles with a 3.6 L V-6 engine. This is a really popular engine available across the different product lines for the last ten years. However, not all of the 3.6 L engines are affected. It's only the ones with a cartridge type oil filter. The technical service bulletin talks about replacing the O-ring seal on the cap side of the oil filter housing. This little O-ring is not included with the filter itself although it should be. Unfortunately when priced out separately this extremely minor looking part goes for close to seven dollars. When you add this together with full synthetic Mobil one brand oil as recommended on the fill cap and the cartridge paper filter this oil change can cost around fifty dollars in just parts. For those interested in learning about how to reset the driver information center oil change reminder system I have posted a video on how to accomplish this task on a 2009 Cadillac SRX although many GM cars will use the same exact procedures, so go ahead and check it out here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDKCAIeOHeA

Blower motor problems video highlighting diagnostic procedures for Diy car mechanics and there's more information available below (Show More). Proper electrical diagnosis of automotive blower motors will help prevent replacing the wrong parts. Someone asked how to check for a good ground so I added a video here showing two methods of testing ground integrity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGWhzTuJroQ I also added a video that talks about what to do if the blower motor runs all the time even when the keys are pulled from the ignition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbd8K8Jzvv8 Finally, the blower motor is a common AC repair within the skill level of many driveway mechanics. I have a special article for Chevy and GMC truck owners with interior fan problems. Learn about the updated blower control module parts available from this next article https://www.fixmyoldride.com/AC-blower-control-module-problems.html

This video talks about what to check if you find the blower motor runs when the key is turned off. This applies mostly to the coolant fan and interior blower motor for the AC. It's also relevant when you have accessories that continue to run after removing the keys from the ignition. I shot the video in response to my how to diagnose blower motor problems video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vmfxYg8LoY Note that if you have a 2000-2005 GMC or Chevrolet pickup truck or SUV with ATC (Automatic Climate Control) there is an updated AC blower control module available. Replacement takes care of many intermittent blower motor issues. Here's the full article about the module and replacement harness kit. https://www.fixmyoldride.com/AC-blower-control-module-problems.html

I should have mentioned if the ground is poor the test light would be dim and on the meter it would read less then battery voltage. This result could indicate corrosion between the body and the connection. I always say in my posted videos that you need a good ground and power to an automotive accessory such as a power window or blower motor to make it run. I usually explain about the power side but have not talked about testing the ground side that much. On my blower motor video a viewer asked how does one check for a good ground. It was a good question so I made a quick video showing 2 methods of testing for a strong vehicle ground. If you want to see how to fix automotive electrical problems like a pro review this diagnostic tips page. https://www.fixmyoldride.com/strategy-based-electrical-diagnosis.html

How to replace Cadillac daytime running lights. The bulbs are really hard to get at. So much so I decided to make a video showing whats involved. I worked at GM dealers for 25 years so I am familiar with the product. They use to give us an access hatch so we could replace the bulbs. Not on this Cadillac model. The daytime running lamp is a combination bulb that also does turn signals. It is a dual filament amber colored bulb and the replacement bulb number is 3757A they are about 6 bucks for a 2 pack. I went to the dealership to get mine so one was 8 bucks but I wanted to do some research at the dealership about the running lamp issue. I'm working on a blog post to cover this in more detail because it is a common problem. If you have a Chevy truck take a look at this page about Chevrolet daytime running lights. https://www.fixmyoldride.com/Chevy-daytime-running-light.html

This video covers how to replace the cabin filter on a Cadillac. I also have a video that covers the Infiniti and Nissan cars https://youtu.be/j-3UC5GckOw This video covers, any GM Sigma platform cars like the 2003-2007 Cadillac CTS, 2004-2009 Cadillac SRX, and 2005--2011 Cadillac STS. Although I took the cowling apart this wasn't necessary. You can replace this filter without removing a single bolt. For those looking for an inexpensive filter alternative the Wix filter Part# 24869 fits all of these cars and more. Like anything auto repair related the first time is the hardest. I could do this in about 5 minutes next time, so don't make it hard on yourself like I did. A friend of mine has been driving around with a check engine light on their 2002 Toyota Corolla for a couple of weeks. They finally stopped by and let me scan the car with my Bluetooth OBDII adapter. I pulled the codes up using my Nexus seven tablet running kit Kat in combination with the torque Pro application. Also note the app is available in a light version for free and can also be used on most smart phones. I was hoping for an exciting code, but it turns out to be one of the most common ones. In fact I see this code so often I made a video about it a couple years ago that can still be viewed on this channel. I will provide a link to it at the end of this description so you can see the diagnostic tree chart involved with this extremely common fault code. Let me provide an update for you on the repair of this automobile. It set a code P0440 the definition being evaporative fuel malfunction. This can often turn out to be a gas cap problem. Since on this vehicle its original equipment making it about thirteen years old, we decided to go ahead and replace it, and it solved the problem. You have to remember that these fuel caps are required to seal yet are made up of several different cheap plastic pieces. Therefore a defective gas is one of the most common causes of this diagnostic trouble code. With that said, it is possible for it to be something else because there are many components involved with the evaporative emission system. Example, review this page about canister purge valve problems https://www.fixmyoldride.com/vapor-canister-purge-problems.html Gas cap code video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IX_lxYDAA0

Here is a Quick video showing how to reset the Cadillac oil change reminder on first generation SRX and CTS models with the standard driver information center. I change the oil every 6 months regardless of what the oil reminder say's. Although as money gets tight I might back off from this because the Mobile one Full Synthetic 5w-30 is expensive at around 27 bucks for 6 quarts. You have to buy 5 quarts at bulk and 1 quart separate to reach the full mark on the dip stick ( Thanks General Motors ). If you own one of these cars you might be interested in my average fuel economy which I also show in the video. My MPG was so low today I wanted to document it because it's hard to believe. Yes I did get stuck in some rush hour traffic but less than 12 miles per gallon is miserable. My first car was a 74 pinto and it got better mileage with no fuel injection or computer. How to handle a tire pressure warning light video. In this video I use my sisters 09 Nissan Altima as an example but the procedure works on many models. Often when the tire warning light comes on it will stay on even if you find and fill a low tire. I review a technical service bulletin that reviews this issue and provides some tips to get the light to turn off. Also some information about what the difference is between an on steady tire warning light and one that is flashing on and off.

In several of my auto repair videos I use a digital multi-meter to perform various tests. Several of the you tubers mentioned that the video was nice, but they were confused on how to actually use the automotive meter because of all of the different possible settings. I'm glad they pointed this out, because I can see how this could be extremely confusing. Although I used the voltage scale in this short clip, the settings procedure also applies to the resistance (OHMS) and amperage (AMPS) scales. When it comes right down to it, the settings move the decimal point around on the display giving the meter the ability to measure small and large amounts of voltage, amps and ohms of resistance. Most of the inexpensive automotive meters have these manual settings. More expensive units have a feature called auto ranging where the meter selects the scale for you when you connect up to perform the test. If you have any other questions about how to use a multimeter you can leave them in the comments along with suggestions for additional video content on this channel. Think your cars AC isn't cold enough? Find out for sure with a quick test. If you need more information about how the system works or how to diagnose specific problems stop by my website. https://www.fixmyoldride.com/fix-old-car-air-conditioning.html There are other videos about running an air conditioning performance test, but they seemed unnecessarily long. So here is my simplified version of how to run a basic car air conditioning test. I ran it on my own car, that's now about 6 years old. I have never added refrigerant since new and the AC system is a little low. In fact, the low side pressure reading is about 32 psi. Keep in mind the test was conducted in South Florida on a hot humid day. Under these conditions the 50 degree results is good enough for me. Maybe I'll add some Freon next year?

My goal with the video was to show the capabilities of the torque application that is available for android devices like the Nexus seven. I had a vehicle setting a history code for oxygen sensor voltage low for sensor one bank one. I apologize for the out of focus, but my cheap camcorder doesn't seem to be able to auto focus on a screen with any amount of glare on it. Between the autofocus malfunction and the problems that go along with the torque application, it can be really hard to shoot a high-quality video and fix cars at the same time. My point of the video is that many who have purchased the torque application fail to explore its capabilities and get the most out of it. When I go through YouTube looking for torque demonstration videos they often show pulling up codes and monitoring RPMs. This is why I wanted to highlight the sensor graphing functionality. It's not often you can buy something for five dollars that has such deep capabilities. Although I struggled with this video I plan on upgrading my camcorder and giving it another shot. Thanks for bearing with me and please leave a comment if you are interested in seeing more videos about the advanced features in the torque application.

Quick video about checking brakes and tires at home. Details about why on some models looking through the wheel at the wear indicator can be misleading. I'm a strong believer in not replacing brake pads until they are right on the wear indicator because the sensor provides ample warning.

Automotive electrical relays are actually quite reliable and do not require replacement as often as people may think. But there is always an exception to the rule. I was diagnosing a no start on a big diesel John Deere tractor and was expecting to find that it would need a starter motor replacement. After some diagnosis I found that the relay was bad. When I popped the cover off I was surprised to find that there was a clean hairline crack in the contact blade of the relay, that was the root cause of the no start condition. Usually when a relay fails you find burned contacts or some other kind of damage. I thought I would share this unusual automotive relay failure with you. I built a page that outlines 3 ways to diagnose automotive electrical relays and I included a better pictures of this bad relay. http://www.youfixcars.com/testing-automotive-relays.html

http://www.auto-facts.org/chevy-repair-manuals.html How to quickly find information in your online Chevrolet repair manual when the included search function lets you down. For the most part the search feature works fantastic. But you may run into a few instances where the repair diagram is not linked up like it should be. The Chevrolet repair manual is one of the most useful tools you can find for repairing your GM car or truck at home. One reason it may be superior compared to manuals supplied by other manufactures is because Chevrolet openly supplies information from its factory publications. If you would like more details about the right to repair act and why some carmakers do not provide good car repair information to the do it yourselfer visit my page mentioned above. This video is intended to answer the most common question I get about the online Chevy repair manual that I recommend to my website visitors. This question is how do I find what I'm looking for in the manual itself. Some repair diagrams and automotive information can be challenging to find. This video shows what to do when the included search function does not automatically return the results you expected.

I came up with a plan to justify the purchase of a new Nexus seven tablet. I told my girlfriend that I needed it to fix cars. I showed her the torque app and explained how the tablet was actually going to be a diagnostic tool I used on the automobile. In our relationship agreement she is not allowed to decline the purchase of new automotive tools because it's what I do for a living. Being serious the torque applications for android has some advanced functions that my handheld scanner doesn't. It's also good for clearing codes and checking inspection readyness I think some of the most valuable features will be the graphing capabilities of the application. In this video I show how to graph an oxygen sensor but you can change the X and Y axis of the graph to include any of the sensors in the drop down list highlighted in green. There are plenty to choose from. I put together a page on the you fix cars website that gets into more detail about purchasing and setting up the Bluetooth adapter and pairing it with the torque application that I installed on a Nexus seven tablet running android 4.2 jellybean. There are some valuable tips for those interested in using a phone or tablet to scan automobiles. http://www.youfixcars.com/android-car-scanner.html

This two-minute video shows you how to replace the cabin filter on Infiniti and Nissan automobiles. This works on the Nissan Maxima and Ultima models that have the interior air filter installed behind the glove box. This video also covers the Infiniti M and G series sport coupes and sedans that also install the cabin filter behind the glove box. The original Nissan filter sells for around $40 at the dealership. I opted for an aftermarket filter for about half the price. Nissan and Infiniti cars have been putting the cabin filter in the same place for about a decade. However, it might look slightly different throughout those 10 years. In 2013 they finally put a hatchway access in some models so you don't have to take out the glove box liner. Also note in some of the long-winded four to eight minute videos that show this procedure, they leave the glove box in and use super long Phillips screwdriver. The glove box comes out so quick and easily I don't find it necessary to go that route. Regardless of the method you use replacing the cabin filter on Infiniti and Nissan automobiles shouldn't take more than about 15 minutes. We are talking about releasing a few clips and removing seven number two Phillip head screws. The degree of difficulty makes the operation within the reach of most do-it-yourself auto mechanics.

People often ask about checking for blown fuses on cars. Questions like where they're located and how to figure out which one does what. Sounds like basic stuff but mini fuses can be a pain to check because they are so tiny. You don't want to pull each one out because there are to many and damaging terminals is possible. So I shot this quick video covering the basics of how to check them with a meter. Ford purge valve stuck wide-open. I've seen a lot of EVAP system problems, but never one like this at 00:28. This Ford truck got stuck in purge mode thanks to a defective purge valve. https://www.fixmyoldride.com/vapor-canister-purge-problems.html I put together this page that discusses some common vapor canister purge problems on Ford and Chevrolet products. On this car, when the purge circuit malfunctioned, it applied so much vacuum to the gas tank that an odd noise would come from the spring-loaded fill valve. It also caused the engine to run rough and a dent in the bottom side of the fuel tank. Of course this is the Ford Easy Fill system with no fuel cap. The owner had to replace the purge valve and the canister to correct the issue. When you have a problem like this you can have a long list of other symptoms. One of the most common is after filling the tank you'll actually suck raw gas in through the vacuum supply connection on the intake manifold. This can make the vehicle sputter and misfire and set various check engine light codes. However, trouble codes for a rich mixture or random misfire are the most common. Often when the purge valve malfunctions it will set a code P1450, but this is not always the case. If your vehicle is making this odd noise from the Ford Easy Fill fueling valve you might have a purge valve problem. The good news is the purge valve is not difficult to replace and the updated parts seem to be more reliable. You can do a search for "Ford code P1450" to view step-by-step replacement videos.
