CATALOG: http://www.autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/Software_Catalog.html Fuel Injector Electrical Quick-Fix Running electrical tests on the fuel injector should be a main component of an auto repair injection strategy. The fuel injector is a coil winding, that magnetically moves a fuel valve pintle. Here are the electrical facts about the fuel injector. 1) The opening and closing of the injector can be determined, by the superimposed voltage and current waveform. 2) As a rule of thumb, fuel injectors draw about 950 milli Amps, or almost 1 Amp. 3) The first step in testing a fuel injector is to make sure it's being triggered, so use a noid light to make sure ECM is doing its job. Do not use an LED test light to test injectors, as the current or Amps is all wrong to test the injector. 4) Use a stethoscope or screw driver to listen for a clicking injector noise. 5) The injector always has 12 volts steady power applied to it, through a power relay. On some vehicles, the injector relay stays off with engine off, so a crank signal is needed by the ECM to turn the injector relay on. Dodge and many European cars use this system. 6) The ECM provides a pulsed ground to activate the fuel injector. 7) At idle, most ECMs give the injector about a 3 to 5 milli second pulse. During cranking the pulse may reach over 20 milli seconds. 8) The best way to determine fuel flow pulse is not using injector pulse width, is by doing a duty cycle test with the multi-meter. 9) There are 2 electrical tests done on the fuel injector, the duty-cycle and the oscilloscope test. To run a duty-cycle test, connect the multi-meter set to duty-cycle between injector pulsed wire and 12 volt power. On 99% of vehicles, at idle, the duty-cycle should be about 2.9 to 3%. 10) To run the waveform test, use an oscilloscope of graphing meter with a good resolution. Connect the leads between battery negative and injector pulsed wire. Look for the following waveform spots. Make sure it's grounded all the way down. Look for a clean pulse-width. Make sure the shut off spike is at least 35 volts or higher. Many ECMs clip the turn-off spike at 35 volts. The high spike is an indication of injector coil winding health. Remember to use the injector resistance specification. The 0.95 Amps rule of thumb here is just that, a general rule. That concludes the Fuel Injector Electrical Quick-Fix.

A faulty knock sensor will cause a faulty code to set, and may also cause ignition timing to be skewed. Lack of power may also be another symptom. These are the knock sensor facts. 1) The knock sensor is a type of microphone, screwed to the engine block or manifold. 2) It is a piezo electric or crystal component. 3) Knock sensors produce their own electricity. 4) A knock sensor produces alternating or AC current. 5) The sensor is tuned to between 6 to 9 thousand Hertz, which is the pinging frequency, so as not to confuse the ECM. 6) There are two types of knock sensors, the older wide band, and the newer resonant or tuned knock sensor. 7) You test these two types of sensors differently. 8) To test the wide band knock sensor, with engine and key off, probe with a volt meter set to AC, between battery ground and the knock sensor signal wire. Then, light tap near the knock sensor using an extension or back of the ratchet wrench. 9) The resonant newer style knock sensor will not react to engine tap. These sensors are tuned only to an engine ping. 10) To test these sensors, connect the volt meter as before, start the engine, then remove the fuel pump relay or fuse. As the vehicle is starved for fuel, pre-load the engine a bit by putting the car in gear, foot on brake, and accelerate a bit. The fuel starved engine will ping. On both tests you should see an AC voltage outputted. That concludes the knock sensor Quick-Fix.

Permanent power is a simple connection to the 12.6 volts battery voltage source right through a protection fuse. The other side of the circuit is the switched power supply. This power supply is done through a relay, but keep in mind that as simple as this wiring is, it also controls the entire E C M operation. From the switched power supply, the E C M also senses this 12 volt input and powers the fuel pump relay. If there's no crank sensor input meaning that the engine hasn't been started and is not cranking, then the E C M cuts the activation to the fuel pump relay in order to prevent it from functioning while the engine is Off. The circuit presented here is a fairly non complicated circuit, but it serves as the basis of understanding how E C M circuits are wired. It also serves as a guide in the event that, as it is often done today, the owner of an older, vintage or collectible vehicle wants to switch to a fuel injection system. In many cases older carburetors are either non repairable due to parts or they are too expensive to keep them in operation. So, it pays to take them out of commission until the owner wants to sell his vehicle. Aftermarket cost effective fuel injection systems are now very much available and simple to set and program. It is important to remember that this sensor is connected in series with an E C M internal resistor. The ECM microprocessor takes the actual signal at the middle of the voltage divider network or between the sensor and internal resistor. This is important to know for two reasons. One, if the sensor is disconnected and the signal wire is probed, you should see 5 volts, like any other sensor. But, if a load, such as another resistor or a test light is used to drop the voltage down and no change is seen, it means the ECM internal resistor is shorted, and the ECM should be replaced. On this sensor, the ECM provides 5 volts, through the internal resistor. Don't worry about shorting this circuit to ground, the 5 volt reference voltage regulator is protected internally. Do not use a power probe on any computer circuit, however, contrary to what most theoretical instructors say, a test light is fine to be used with this circuit, if connected to ground. The ECM also needs a very important value in addition to many other inferred parameters, it needs a fuel pressure value and gets this parameter from the fuel pressure sensor. With GDI the older fuel pressure sensor is a totally different device construction. It has to withstand about 2900 PSI of pressure or even more upon peak values. As a rule, GDI fuel rails are much stronger and thicker in construction. Another difference in GDI as opposed to PFI is that on GDI upon cranking the engine, there has to be a rapid high fuel pressure rise. The engine will not start until there's enough fuel pressure in the high pressure fuel rail system. This means that the fuel pump's check valve and pump itself has to be at it's optimum at all times. Residual high pressure leaks also have to be minimized. During all this mayhem, it is the fuel pressure sensor the one in charge of keeping track of it all. This is the normal operating temperature for the O2 sensor. Here are the facts about the O2 sensor. 1) The O2 sensor won't work below 600 drees Fahrenheit. 2) The O2 sensor is not the same as an Air Fuel Ratio Sensor. The O2 sensor is an older technology. 3) The O2 heater maintains a specific temperature at the O2 sensor. 4) Zirconius and Titania are the two types of O2 material. Zirconium being the most common one. 5) The O2 heater current is about 2 Amps, and have a resistance of about 6 Ohms. 6) If the ECM detects an O2 heater issue, it will shut off the heater circuit, making it seem like the ECM is bad. So, in this case erase the code. 7) Some cars the O2 sensor heater is pulse width modulated to control temperature. 8) An O2 heater circuit LOW code means circuit is below 0.3 Amps. A circuit HIGH means circuit current above 2 Amps. 9) There are three ways to test the O2 sensor heater, testing the ECM response, checking resistance, and checking current flow. 10) To check ECM response, use a series connected 10 Ohm resistor and test-light. The ECM needs to see about 10 Ohms resistance at the Heater circuit. The light should either stay On steady or flicker. 11) To check resistance, connect an Ohm meter in series with the O2 heater. However, this test is not conclussive, unless there is a complete open circuit, since the O2 heater tends to fail after it's hot. 12) To do a current flow test, connect an Amp meter in series with the O2 heater. If O2 heater stays On, look for about 2 Amps. If O2 heater flickers, look for between 0.5 or half an Amp to 2 Amps. Remember that the ECM will shut Off the O2 heater circuit in the event of a malfunction, so you may need to erase codes. That's it for the O2 sensor heater Quick-Fix.

The ECM,uses this value,to calculate fuel injection open time. To test the MAP sensor, and circuit, do the following, with MAP sensor disconnected. 1) First check the ECM circuit, by checking for 5 volts, at one of the 3 MAP sensor wires. 2) Check sensor ground. Check voltage between battery positive, and one of the MAP sensor wires, either or is fine. 3) Reconnect MAP sensor, then backprobe center wire, should have under 1 volt. That's it for circuit check. Then, while probing on center signal wire, start engine. If engine won't start, due to no injection, then it's not the MAP sensor. MAP causes stumble and rough idle, not no start. If no start, use the No Start Trubleshooter Software for extended help. Finally, with MAP sensor, and voltmeter connected, remove MAP sensor, plug a hose to it, and suck on it. You should see voltage fluctuating. If so, then engine no start is due to another reason. If engine starts, then use the waveform database, to determine proper idle running value, and fuel trims at plus or minus 10%. That's all for the MAP sensor quick fix.

The ECM uses this value to run the EVAP monitor. This sensor has no bearing on how the engine runs. Here are the facts about the fuel tank pressure sensor: 1) The fuel tank pressure sensor is a 0 to 5 volt sensor. 2) You should NOT see a stuck on 0 or 5 volt signal value, using a scanner or volt meter. It has to be somewhere in between. 3) If sensor's stuck at 0 volts, then the 5 volt wire is broken. 4) If sensor's stuck at 5 volts, then the ground wire is broken, between the connector and ECM side. 5) You can jump either the sensor ground or 5 volts to signal and it won't hurt the ECM. 6) If you're stuck at either 0 or 5 volts, disconnect the sensor, and suddenly you have voltage at the signal wire, then the wiring is fine. Replace the sensor, or check tank pressure. 7) To test, connect a voltmeter to the signal wire, disconnect tak pressure sensor, jump sensor ground to signal, then also jump sensor 5 volt reference to signal. Do this at the sensor connector. You should see 0 and 5 volts respectively. That proves the ECM and wiring. It also proves that the fuel tank pressure sensor is faulty, replace the sensor. Finally, if your sensor value is stuck somehwere else between 0 and 5 volts, make sure you're not building too much pressure nside the tank due to a faulty fuel cap, or EVAP vent valve. On standard compressors, the belt turns a pulley with an electric clutch. When you turn on the AC, the clutch engages, and the piston starts pumping to compress the refrigerant. There are two problems with this traditional approach. One, a compressor needs a fair amount of power. These are the facts on testing the Diesel Piezoelectric Injector. 1) They use about 120 volts or higher, with a current flow of about 7 Amps. 2) There are 3 to 7 mini pulses per cylinder power cycle. 3) The ECM shuts power off in the event of an injector fault. 4) The high trigger voltage makes the injector crystal expand. 5) Use about 170 to 220 K Ohms are a resistance guide for the Injector. Test scross the two injector pins. 6) Diesel Piezoelectric Injectors crystal tends to short to the outter casing. 7) Test the injector, using an Ohm meter from each pin to ground, thereby testing for a short to case. There should be infinite resistance from injector pin to ground, meaning the ijector case. 8) You must measure across each pin, to ground. Again, there should be no resistance value whatsoever. Remember, if the injector is faulty, the ECM will disable or close this circuit. So it'll seem like the ECM is faulty. That concludes our Diesel Piezoelectric Injector quick fix.

This means that on a given rotational range, the engine will change the lift and timing, on the intake and exhaust cam independently. The NEO VVL engine has a camshaft with two different cam lobe profiles. When one cam profile is no longer needed or after 5000 RPM, the lift profile changes, and allows the engine to keep putting out power all the way to the redline. Neo VVL engines can generally rev to around 8200 RPM in stock form. This in effect has the best of both worlds, a great idle response and high RPM power. The Neo VVL engine changes the cam profiles independently. The Intake cam changes first, and then the Exhaust camshaft thereafter. GDI injector internal resistance ranges between 2.6 to 16.3 Ohms, depending on application. Following, we'll explain exactly how GDI injectors are triggered and how to test them. The analysis of the waveform will show you how to read the waveform in the oscilloscope or graphing multi meter. A typical GDI injector current waveform shows a few points of interest. One, is the injector turn On point, signified here by the sudden rise in current. This turn on point can go as high as 12 Amps on a GDI injector. Again, it all depends on the fuel demands for that particular engine condition. The turn On current value will change according to demand. Also remember that the GDI injector open event is way faster than PFI, at about 0.4 to 5 milli seconds, compared to a typical 5 to 15 or higher milli second PFI injector .... The car had misfiring cylinders upon acceleration. It also had codes P0300, or general misfire code, and codes P0304 and P0302, or misfire on cylinders 2 and 4. The shop performed a tune up, due to old and worn out ignition components. They also cleaned the throttle body, and replaced the oil. These were general repairs that the vehicle did need. Nevertheless, the vehicle was still the same. Finally, the shop opted to replace the ignition coil, but to no avail. It was then that the shop decided to call me in for assistance. When I got to the shop, I spoke to the tech that worked on the car. He said that the vehicle was running rich when the misfire was happening. I asked why he thought that, and he said that fuel trims went high during the misfire. So, I started my diagnostic by doing a code and DataStream analysis. I retrieved codes P0300, P0302 and P0304, in line with what the shop told me. I also got a P0172, or System too Rich (Bank 1). Well, rich conditions are rarer, so I opted to continue and do a fuel trim analysis. I graphed the fuel trims and saw that at idle and higher RPM, the fuel trims were perfect, but, during a loaded condition the fuel trims went high in the negative numbers. That meant that the ECM was reducing fuel injection pulse, due to a rich condition. But rich condition from where? And why was the rich condition only on a loaded engine? I could only think of one reason, a leaky injector! That had to be the cause, but, I needed to prove it! This injector had to have an internal issue, that only acted up during a wide pulse condition, because at idle it was fine. The only way to prove the injector was to do a leak down test, using an injector pulser. This is done with the engine off, by pressurizing the fuel rail, connecting a fuel pressure gauge, and pulsing the injector for a pre-determine amount of time. As I did the test, I saw no difference in drop between all 4 injectors. I knew that as little as a 2 PSI difference was enough to cause problems. The leaky injector should have dropped lower on the gauge, when pulsing at a long pulse width. This issue was not a leaky injector! But wait a minute, what could it possibly be then? I felt like, who wants to be a millionaire, and calling a friend! All right, enough of the self loathing! I decided to get tough with this Honda, and opted for a 5-gas analyzer. The 5-gas was the authority on air fuel issues. I connected the exhaust probe, and proceeded to do an idle and high RPM, unloaded test. The mixture was right on the money. This unit is composed of three parts, the clutch plate, the hub and the coil. The clutch coil is the one that creates an electromagnetic field around it, which attracts the plate and engages the clutch. The plate is also linked to the drive or serpentine belt and is driven by the crankshaft. The hub and the plate have to be calibrated to a specific gap using a feeler gauge. The purpose of this video is to illustrate how almost all AC compressor clutches are wires. The actual wiring may contain other components, such as transistors and IC computer chips, but the control itself is the same. In all cases, these extra components are used to control the relay coil, which in itself controls the AC compressor clutch. This simple circuit can also be used to wire an older vehicle due to lack of parts and high costs. Here is how this circuit works. This circuit has one relay, a refrigerant pressure switch, and a micro switch. The micro switch is a W O T or wide open throttle switch used to disengage the compressor clutch during wide open throttle conditions. The shop checked spark and fuel pressure, and concluded that the fuel pump was the issue. After replacing the fuel pump, the problem persisted and decided to call me in for assistance. At first it was particularly curious to me why they couldn't solve this fairly straightforward problem, but I continued preparing for my plan of attack. I started with a scan tool data stream analysis, just to get a feel for the problem. I found no codes present, and proceeded to the scan tool bi-directional control option. Bi direction control would allow me to actuate the fuel pump relay, and check for pressure. While activating the relay, I found it hard to hear the relay working inside the tank. So, I took my stethoscope and could hear the fuel pump turning. But something didn't sound right? I've checked hundreds of fuel pumps before. This fuel pump sounded strange, as in having a weak condition. I knew that there was only one way to know for sure if the fuel pump was receiving the right amount of current. I wanted to check for current flow at this circuit, so I next grabbed my trusty oscilloscope to perform a fuel pump speed test. This test is done by measuring the fuel pump power feed line with a clamp on amp probe, counting the current humps, and then determining the fuel pump speed. The results were that of slow revving fuel pump. But, how could this be? This was a new fuel pump! Was this another defective new part? No way it could be. But one thing caught my eye ..... The vehicle had a code P0420, or Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). The vehicle ran fine, with no apparent issues. So, the first thing the shop did was replace the front O2 sensor. They also replaced the air filter, and decided to throw in a full tune up while they were at it. Finally, they resorted to the infamous fuel injection cleaning to correct the problem. None of these remedies took care of the issue, and they finally gave up and decided to call me in for assistance. The very first act that I did in tackling this problem was to do a graphing scan tool data stream analysis. I needed to graph the O2 sensors, to do a comparison of the signals. As a rule, the rear O2 sensor activity should be much lower than the front. As I proceeded to graph the signal, sure enough, the O2 sensor signals looked just right. The rear O2 sensor did have activity when I goosed the throttle, although much less. This was normal, so, I assumed that the issue was the converter. Before I decided to go ahead and replace the converter, I decided to go a bit further, and do a fuel delivery analysis. The converter was an expensive proposition, and I wanted to be sure. So, I pulled up the fuel trims and fuel status. The fuel trims were at plus 4% and the fuel status was in closed loop. This was a perfect reading. The E C M was controlling the mixture. So, what else could I do to be 100% sure that the converter was faulty? I finally decided to do a 5 gas analysis, using my gas analyzer unit. I knew that all engines are supposed to have about 0.5% Oxygen, and about 14% for the Carbon Dioxide, or C O 2. These 5-gas figures always point to a perfect combustion. As I did the 5-gas reading, low and behold, it was almost perfect. There's always a small amount of Carbon Monoxide in every mixture. After the converter it should be at about 0.5% as well, and I was seeing 0.9%, only slightly over. This converter was doing its job. All converters need a swinging O2 sensor to operate. The front O2 sensor was definitely switching lean to reach, as it should. So, what was going on here? The rear O2 sensor had little activity, which is normal for a post O2 sensor! But wait a minute? The ECM Ghost Electronic Breakout Box, is about developing a way to view, what a car computer or ECM is doing and seeing. The current state of automotive repair is this. The technician relies on calculated data, from a code reader or scan tool. The auto repair tech, has no access to the ECM pins, unless he disassembles the wiring harness, to uncover the wires and probe using an oscilloscope or multimeter. The ECM Ghost Electronic-Breakout-Box, solves all that. It allows the tech to view all ECM pins, up to 8 pins at once. He can pick and choose from a maximum of 124 pins. The ECM Ghost, is connected between the ECM, and wiring harness, through dedicated Block Connectors. The magnitude of this device is huge. It takes hours for an auto repair tech, to run the needed electrical tests on a modern car. With the ECM Ghost, running a dedicated software on the connected PC or Laptop, and access to all ECM pins, virtually hundreds of tests can be run, in a matter of minutes. Years, of automotive troubleshooting experience, went to develop the needed algorithms for these tests. To finalize, the ECM Ghost, Electronic Breakout-Box is composed of 3 parts: 1) The multiplexer data acquisition box, with state of the arts electronics... 2) The dedicated Connector-Blocks, which we manufacture. These OEM Block Connectors can not be purchased from the manufacturer, so we make them. 3) The software running on the PC or Laptop, which is the heart of the system. All the intelligence will be found there. The ECM Ghost, allows auto repair technicians, to diagnose issues at least 10 times faster. In many ways, the equipment will also pinpoint the issue, since it has access to all the ECM, or engine computer pinout wires. Why is this tool so valuable? Well, auto repair diagnostic, done much faster. Takes the guessing, out of electronic testing. Why? Because the electrical tests, are performed right away, faster, and automatically. Special algorithms, will drive the main software, running on the PC or Laptop, that's connected to the ECM Ghost Breakout-Box through a USB cable. No machine now, can do what the ECM Ghost does, not even the manufacturer specific, or OEM dealer scanner, because these OEM scanners, have no direct connection to the ECM Pins. They simply take what the ECM detects, good or bad, and report it as factual. We developed the Scan 1, with many built in algorithms. I also developed the TransDoctor, and Mr. BOB DLC, used on automotive transmissions, and Mr. BOB is a smaller breakout box, used on the OBD 2 diagnostic connector, for network issues. As you can see, we have the experience, and we're making the ECM Ghost Breakout-Box a reality. We make connectors for other equipment, such as the TransDoctor, but the sheer amount of connectors needed for this machine, is much greater, and we're glad to announce, that we have digitized and make all of them. In most cases, another module or computer, such as the ECM, Body Control Module, or the Instrument Cluster Module, serves as the actual anti-theft module. The way the anti-theft systems works is through an ignition key transponder. The ignition key transponder is embedded inside the back or plastic side of the ignition key. It is a non battery operated circuit. This circuit is powered by an induction coil, that generates a current in the key transponder coil itself, which powers the signal code generation circuit.
