Making Piranha Solution

01:52
REUPLOADED DUE TO SOUND ISSUE. In this video we make and demonstrate the oxidizing power of piranha solution. Piranha solution is a 3:1 mixture of sulfuric acid to hydrogen peroxide. NOTE: I used nitrile gloves in this video. It is recommended that you do not use nitrile, but instead use latex or vinyl gloves.

Aluminum and Mercury

08:50
Molecule Website: http://www.avogadr.io Outro music: https://soundcloud.com/sorrysines ------------------------------------------ When mercury is added to aluminum, it forms an amalgam (a mercury alloy). Aluminum is normally protected by a thick oxide layer, but the formation of the amalgam disrupts it. It allows fresh aluminum to react with air to form white aluminum oxide. As the oxide grows, it forms as these cool white fibers. ------------------------------------------ NileRed Shop: www.nilered.ca Facebook: https://goo.gl/uyxvJV Instagram: https://goo.gl/z4hFse Patreon: https://goo.gl/3h353G

How to extract Caffeine from Tea (Classic DCM Method)

03:39
In this method, caffeine is extracted from tea. The type of tea that is used isn't very important (as long as it is caffeinated). The amount of caffeine recovered is small, but this is for fun and not for large yields. I adapted the procedure from here: http://employees.oneonta.edu/knauerbr/chem226/226expts/226_expt06_pro.pdf

Dissolving Gold in Mercury

06:11
Follow me on Instagram: https://goo.gl/5oQiWQ Follow me on Twitter: https://goo.gl/uCmnV4 ----------------------------------------- Okay, so we are not truly dissolving the gold, we are actually forming an alloy between the gold and the mercury (called an amalgam). This process is not only cool to look at, but it also is really useful to extract gold from ore. The gold-mercury amalgam can then be isolated and the mercury is boiled off or removed chemically. This leaves behind relatively pure gold. Outro music: https://soundcloud.com/sorrysines

How to extract Caffeine from Coffee

06:47
We will be extracting some caffeine from coffee today! I used regular coffee grounds, but I think the process is actually faster and easier with instant coffee. In theory the yield should have been hovering around 300mg if ALL the caffeine was removed. However, I got around 10% of that (30mg). Apparently 10g makes about a cup of coffee, so a yield of 30mg isn't that horrible. Industrially, the caffeine is made synthetically and not extracted because it isn't really economical. The only time caffeine is extracted is for making decaffeinated coffee. But in that case, the end product is the coffee itself and the caffeine is a by-product. It is just much cheaper to make the caffeine directly. Ill be doing a future video on how to get caffeine from caffeine pills. Link to my patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=2448989&ty=h I am lazy and it is getting there. I have been spending most of my time focusing on filming new experiments, so I often forget about the other things.

Making Brooker's Merocyanine

22:41
For this video, I decided to make Brooker’s Merocyanine, also called MOED, which exhibits solvatochromism. This means that it its color changes drastically, depending on the solvent that it’s dissolved in. I thought this effect was really cool and I wanted to try it out myself. Preparing Iron (II) Sulfide (cool reaction)

03:54
The synthesis of iron (II) sulfide involves reacting 1 equivalent of sulfur with 1 equivalent of iron. The reaction is initiated by a hot glass stirring rod into it. It is an extremely exothermic reaction. This is an interesting reaction to use as a demonstration, but the product is useful. The Iron (II) sulfide, or FeS, can be reacted with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen sulfide gas. This is a very useful gas, but it is extremely toxic.
