The bottom line is we don't really know what causes type 1 diabetes, but there are two things that come into play. 1) There is a genetic predisposition to the disease and 2) Something else occurs like a viral infection, or bacteria someone is exposed to, or something in the environment triggers the immune system to go awry and attack and kill beta cells in the pancreas that make insulin.
